Apex Car rentals was pretty cheap when I was last in Cairns. But they are not at the airport. They do offer a shuttle.

East Coast Car Rentals are cheap.
However, when I hired a car from them there it got bashed in Cape Trib and although I'd taken out zero-excess insurance they said it was up to me to get it back to their offices in Cairns. Luckily with rope holding it together it was possible to drive it back. Not sure if other companies have better policies in the fineprint.

Ace car rentals are very cheap in cairns

Not enough information to advise. Rental car deals/codes/coupons are dependent on Pick-Up date and duration of rental - other factors may be vehicle type, age of renter, additional drivers etc.
Fair call. Small/ Medium car, 4 small people.
Basically:
Pick up from Cairns (Cairns Esplenade region) —-> Pt Douglas 6/9/15
Pick up from Pt Douglas —-> Cairns (Airport) 9th or 10th/9/15
Each time we have the car for 24 hrs, so do the commute plus Mossman Gorge on the 6th.
Then pick up the car on the arvo of the 9th and do Cape Trib then get the car to Cairns airport within 24 hrs (and yep I know about the not allowed on dirt roads with hire cars situation).
You're going to pay a premium for one way rental and for individual day rentals.
It may work out cheaper to rent for the whole period and have it parked up somewhere (safe) when not using.I can't imagine you'll get the two one way trips for cheaper than the return over that small period and you don't have to worry about wasting time on the extra pick-ups and drop offs.
Unless you really can't park the car somewhere in Port Douglas just get a return. Ace Rentals is $135 from 6-11th(I'm guessing a morning pick up and afternoon drop off?) and has a free shuttle to airport.

I've dealt with Ace a few times, always been good. They are owned by Hertz now (changed a while ago). If you compare Hertz price to Ace though, there's quite a difference for the same cars.

$122.85Just for reference. Ace add $2/day per extra driver, plus their insurance excess @ $2800 is over the $2250 that credit cards such as Citi Signature cover.
4 days before we needed it Thrifty etc all dropped their price equal to & slightly below ACE. Then With the 12% + extra drivers free + $2000 excess for NRMA,RAA,QRMA holders Thrifty was the winner. Plus we got a Mitsi ASX for $31 /day. If you aren't a member you can use P15OFF for 15% off
Lastly, we made the Thrifty booking without providing any cc details. So you could book it, then go elsewhere if something better popped up
