  • Can you tell me where I can order tradition meat (zebra, big bird, elephant, kudu) or will kangaroo, rabbit, work?

Also can it be used for drying other than meat?

    Thanks op very interesting.

I use beef, topside or silver side. I've tried Kangaroo before and it work well, not to sure about the rabbit. But there's no reason why you can't experiment :-)

Thanks op. Perhaps I should book an appointment with an USA dentist .

Yes, very interested to know if it can be done with rabbit.

  • Any deal on just the Biltong Maker itself? I don't need the spices and have my own knife.

    • The biltong maker on its own is $110 + Free Shipping

Yum Yum, just made 5KGs of Biltong over the weekend. Grown up eating Biltong my whole life, was even given it for teething as a baby…
I find Rump to taste the best (and easiest to make in AUS). Ostrich is good too, but bit dry.
Have looked at buying a Mellerware Biltong maker for years now, but as a RSA/AUS Bargainer couldn't bring myself to buy one for that price.
Friends and Family all over the world have built their own Biltong boxes… Very easy to make and cheap. Use a cardboard box or line the Plastic box for easy cleaning or replacement.

    • I tried the cardboard box for a while, but they don't seem to last. Been using a biltong king for 3 years now and I'm very happy with it!

      • You can buy a lot of cardboard boxes for $110 though.

        • You sure can :-)

    • Was the 5Kgs before dehydrating or after? 5Kgs of Biltong or Jerky is a heck of a lot!

      • Nah 5KG's not that much, gets eaten quickly. 5KGs before hanging.
Depends how much you like Biltong… Like pringles, once you start you can't stop. :)

        • Well I agree there :) But usually most of the weight is water. So 5Kg before hanging might be as little as 500g-1000g after drying.

  • Why is this so expensive?
It looks from the picture like it's mostly just a plastic case for hanging the meat to dry, but I assume there must be more to it?

    Thanks :)

    • The maker also has a light fitting and a fan. It gets imported from South Africa and import costs are expensive.

  • Less that AUD 50 retail in South Africa.

I use a simple food dehydrator I got for $30 from Kmart. Works perfectly.
I cut my meat into cubes and have it sitting on 3 or 4 levels of the dryer.
When I am not making biltong, I am drying mango and bananas.
