I will be traveling to Nepal and will be needing a money belt
Can anyone recommend a product?
Is a belt better than a neck pouch type?
Thanks!

My gf and I both bought money neck pouches for our 6 month round the world trip. We didn't use them more than once.
You are asking for trouble. Just place your everyday wallet in one of your front pockets of pants/trousers and you'll be fine.

I wear cargo pants and went a step further and when overseas where clothing alterations are cheap got an extra flap sewn over the top of my button up pockets.
That way pickpockets have to open two flaps to get at anything.
20 years of travel, several attempts made but nothing lost yet.
I also dress down, never wear gold, only ever carry a days worth of cash, never carry all my cards and never carry my passport with me.
I have a cheap under $50 smart phone and a small pocket camera for pics (canon ixus 500hs)
Thieves always target stooges flashing cash, jewellry, iphones and SLR's
If you're worried about getting robbed then have a dummy wallet with a few $ notes in it. some expired CC's and other junk cards.
if you have a nice wedding band you don't want to lose (or your wife will kill you if you lose it) then buy a temporary/cheapo one from aliexpress for $1.50 -note: it's silver -not so bling
as Davros and bargainaus said - deep pockets.
All of the above, when traveling I use the thinest wallet possible and all my travel pants have inside pockets (normally velcro or zipped) and I have never had an issue.
If you are in a really dodgy area, think being robbed rather than pick pocketed carry a dummy wallet as suggested.
Biggest tip I can think of is don't flaunt wealth and consider that your definition of wealth might be different to somebody going to steal from you and don't look like the easiest mark around you.
If you must carry allot of cash with you and want to use a money belt I would recommend an under arm version with a low profile neck strap as they conceal better and I find are more comfortable to wear and are quicker for you to access.
Hope something there helps.
Keep a roll of small denomination currency rolled up in a bundle with a rubber band or fold back clip, first sign of trouble throw it on the ground in front of the assailant and run.
@jason101:
We had a friend who did similar in South America, apparently their favourite trick is to slash your pockets and take the money. He had a roll of really small denominations he had in his pocket and hid the rest.
Never been too Nepal…the above comments would make me change my destination.
Everywhere has pickpockets. Knock on wood I've never had an issue. I just carry a bumbag with me that I put to the front and I thread the ends together so it is hard to open without me noticing. Looks Dorkie but I've never had any issues. You can get ones that are reinforced to make them hard to slash/cut. As others have said distribute your cash and cards in several places and keep enough accessible for smaller things so you don't need to keep going to your main stash area. If something smells like a scam walk away quickly, it usually is. Best to look around the web at the sites that detail the current scams doing the rounds. Apparently Nepal has some great accommodation deals going at the moment because they are trying to attract tourists back. Have fun on your trip.
my wife spent a month in Nepal. she loved it. admittedly 15 years ago. just watch your bags. keep them padlocked shut and in front of you. or chained to something. that could be in any country. well, except Japan.
travel, don't take anything of value or that you're worried about losing.
I look at this way - if my hotel caught on fire then what would I grab and then get out ASAP i.e. passport + wallet. everything else can burn.
except Japan.
Why except Japan?
Japan is exceedingly honest. Lived there four years. Never had an ounce of trouble. Lost my wallet on the street and got it back intact. Sure, had a guy break into my house but he was just a fetishist who was after random stuff.
Japanese culture and people are very honest and respectful of property. At least in my experience.
Thanks everyone.
I will be in Kathmandu for only a couple of days before I leave for a 4 week trek through the Everest region. During this trek I will need to carry about $1000 on me as there are few ATMs etc obviously.
At this stage I will just be keeping it in my backpack in 3 or 4 different spots. I don't plan on ever leaving my backpack unsupervised
The problem is that "stuff" happens whilst you are travelling so you may not be able to control your pack all the time, e.g. stashed in the luggage compartment of a bus. Personally I wouldn't leave anything valuable in your main backpack apart from an emergency stash; it is easier to control things on your person. I also agree with the people who suggest you lock your backpack to something whenever you aren't actually carrying it. It only takes a minute of distraction for someone to take it, but if it is chained to a chair leg then it makes it a tad harder (and probably funnier if they try).
A lock like this
Wnt travelling in Nepal for 4 weeks last week, including a week trekking.
It may sound silly but we bought some cheap velcro pouches which were attached to a keyring chain, and actually hooked the keyring chain around the front drawstring of our pants and actually had the pouch hanging near our crotches for the entire time (bring on the jokes!). Had no issues with people trying to mug us in the groin!
Not silly at all! I am thinking of just buying a cheap wallet and somehow hooking it to my pants as well. That way I can keep a bit of money in the wallet and the rest stashed in a few different spots in my pack
Reminds me of the Rodney Dangerfield joke. "If it wasn't for pickpockets I would have no sex life at all". (Sorry couldn't resist).
I use a money belt - It's like tan coloured and goes around my tummy area under my clothes. I use it when I have to take chunks of cash out from the ATM in between accomodation and the bank. The only issue is that you get very sweaty and unless the contents inside the money belt is in a plastic, it ends up all soggy with perspiration. I think there's a place for money belts in travel, but I guess its your preference - taking into consideration safety, climate and availability to safety deposit boxes etc.
We like this one. Just have trouble in airports sometimes when you have to take your belt off.
Always put paper stuff in ziplock bag or wrap it in plastic.

I had a money belt similar to this and wore it probably twice, but it's always handy to have! As someone else said above, if you're going to have a hidden money belt, don't go for the around the neck as they're visible and a decent size guy will just run past and grab the strap and drag it and you until it comes off(happened to 2 people I know in Barcelona!).
When I'm not on a long walk in a place with pickpockets, I usually just throw the extra cash and card in my sock, as filthy as that sounds, it doesn't sweat much above your ankle and can be easy and quite subtle to access when needed. You're already on the right idea by stuffing it in different places, better to lose some of it than all of it. The worst thing about the friend I knew that was robbed in Barcelona is she had all her cards, her passport and cash in there as she thought it was the safest place. Baskets, eggs and all that.
Barcelona is really full of snatchers, specially the beach front. I went to the beach with just the room key and a towel :)
I have a thin but wide pouch that goes under my jeans on the tummy. I wear it always when travelling as it is undetectable and comfotable, I forget I am wearing it. For the day, I put that day's money in my old small wallet in my cross body bag, everything else is on my tum.
Pics or it did not happen! :P
Is belt on the kitchen table photo kinky enuf? Or, just the top button on the jeans undone … :)
You know the obvious answer! :P
always used a money belt, no issues.
have a look at the pacsafe range

I still use a wallet for small cash. moneybelt for large cash and passports.
