Hmm, wonder if flash drive prices are going to start tumbling dramatically after recent talk of Intel 3D Xpoint etc… very nice price!

EDIT: Only 1 per customer too :(

    • +1

i wouldnt think so seeing it is a year off at least before you could buy a crosspoint device.

    • +9

so tiny…. future self / stranger will have a good time looking at the contents in 10 - 20 years time when it miraculously appears from underneath the skirting board.

    • +6

Could be wrong, but I think that technology is 5+ years away from the consumer. Intel and AMD have learnt not to cut each others throats in recent years, rather just trickle the technology in slowly. They used to go balls to the wall, but it is more profitable to them to co-operate. Sad for the consumer, but can't see this changing this anytime soon. If at all.

  • Awesome price, thanks OP.

  • very good price!

  • The Intel 3D Xpoint certainly taking a hit on all Flash drive prices. Over the next few month I would expect the prices to go down.. Off loading stocks.

    • +7

Untrue. Recently announced new tech will come to enterprise market at high prices in coming months. Even then, it doesn't appear economical to replace NAND apparently.. Fills a space between RAM and flash memory: http://www.anandtech.com/show/9470/intel-and-micron-announce…

    • the same could be said about SSD and HDD - but plenty of HDD are still being sold (and probably more than SSD)

      • +2

Probably because SSD still simply doesn't match HDD space - normally speaking the biggest sizes someone might normally get their hands on is 960GBs, and that's still getting pretty expensive. For huge amounts of dirt cheap storage, HDD is still the best way to go.

        • exactly.

  • Tempting, but it doesn't appear to have an attachment for a keyring.

    • +3

      https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61KSQdLYeqL.SL256.jpg

      • I'm not sure where you found the image, but I can now see on the 64GB drive that there is a slot for a small keyring.

        • although also the 64GB, the photos on B&H are better and clearly show a slot - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1159919-REG/sandisk_sd…

        • Yes there is a slot, but if you fit a normal-size keyring there, you probably won't be able to insert the drive into a USB socket. You also run the risk of damaging the slot, as there is no metal surrounding the slot, it's all plastic.

You can, however, cable-tie it to a keyring. I reckon that will be a more secure attachment than the methods shown in the photo. The slot is about 4x1mm on the 64G drive, I suspect the 128G drive's slot will be the same.

Not sure how the string attaches to the cover, the cover I have (64G version) has no holes. Maybe the string is glued to the cover.

    • +1

It does. I am holding my one in my hand right now and I have a dangling polyester necklace attached to it.

  • +3

Seems like a pretty good price, being so small i guess the only issue would be it going missing

  • +5

    Dat price is dope!

Remember to format the drive to NTFS format with 4096 allocation size if you want to copy chunky (4GB+) files.

    • -1

I prefer ext4, although btrfs is worth considering.

      • I am seeing Linux everywhere. Are they only for Linux?

        • +2

          Yes, stick to NTFS.

        • If you load the appropriate drivers then then you can use those file systems on a variety of OSes.

    • Forgot about that an my PNY…full of data and couldn't get the last file, dang!

    • +1

I use exFAT for Mac and Windows

    • -1

Remember to format the drive to NTFS format with 4096 allocation size if you want to copy chunky (4GB+) files.

unless you want equality between windows and mac compatability, then exFAT might be a better option?

      • -1

        Apple can't read NTFS?? lol

        • +1

          Why lol?

It can via additional drivers/software, but why you would you… Ntfs is inefficient on external media and exfat has lower data overheads…

It's also a Microsoft format (extended from fat32),so maybe read up a bit before lol'ing to hard

        • -3

@SBOB: Why apoligise for Apple? It encourages them to make less compatible (AKA special ☺ ) products. At least get on their payroll first before riding them.

        • +4

          @Son ofa Zombie:
Apple has supported NTFS for years. It's just not a very good format, much more prone to the data being non-recoverable if there is any corruption. For USB sticks, which have a higher chance of being corrupted, that makes NTFS a poor choice.

        • +1

          @Son ofa Zombie:

As the couple of posters below agreed, with more detail than I posted, this isn't an windows v apple argument…

But you are making it a intelligent v stupid argument, and at least you're making a good argument for your side…

      • +7

I don't care about Macs and I hope APple dies a painful death.

But here's a post I found that I can confirm is right.

For USB Flash drives you should choose exFAT.

The only exception is if you plan to use the drive to transfer files to Mac OS X or Linux operating systems without exFAT support. In which case you would use FAT32

        FILESYSTEM
exFAT can detect flash media, and reacts respectably. It will make very few extra, unnecessary writes, and store files randomly throughout the storage medium. This will more than maximize the lifespan of the drive, and will speed up transfers substantially.

NTFS is not very friendly to flash media, at least to my knowledge. It makes many many extra disk writes almost constantly, and will degrade the life of the flash drive. It is not faster, and kills your drive faster.

        ALLOCATION SIZE
Allocation size should be adjusted with respect to what the drives intended use is. If you don't know quite yet, leave it at default.

For many small files, allocate as small as possible.

For many large files, allocate as large as possible.

For a few large files, allocate as large as possible.

For a few small files, allocate as large as possible.

        Small file = <25kb
        Large file = >1mb

[Explained]: Allocation size is the size of each little "block" that makes up the entire partition. A files will take up as many of these little "blocks" as it requires. Any remainder left over in the final "block" that the file occupies will be unusable.

        Small allocation = [ |x|x| | | |x| | |]
Pro: Files will fit more snugly with smaller allocation, thus maximizing total space.
        Con: The performance will suffer.

        Large allocation = [—-xx| |x——-|xxxx|]
Pro: Read/Writes are faster, great for larger files
Con: Small files take up more disk space than expected, losing much when dealing with many small files. (smaller than allocation size)

Great, now there is another thing i didn't know i wanted

  • +10

    Didn't need it. Bought anyway

    Tks OP, Bought one.
Was already using the same 64GB version + Transend R95 128GB SD to assist with my Sony Vaio Pro ultrabook due to it only has a 128GB PCIe SSD Hard drive.
Looks like my 64GB will end up sticking to my car stereo for music.

    • How much music are you going to be putting on that USB stick…

      • -2

64 is kind of small isn't it?

my music collection is measured in Terabytes.

@Utopian: depends on the storage format, perhaps SOAZ likes FLAC

        • @Matt P: SOAZ loves FLAC. lol

  • Sequential Read/Write speeds are 148 / 39MB/s: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61Mb2U4xxEL.SL1600.jpg

EDIT: That's for the 32GB one. Can't find any review of this model, its very new. But given that they're stating the read speed as 130MB/s while hiding the write speed, I think it's somewhere in that region…

  • Does anyone know how these stack up to the PNY fellows. Are they as fast?

    • I am pretty sure PNY is faster write speed. This is about ~40MB/s write and 130MB/s read.

      • I wouldn't be so sure. My two PNY Turbos only have 30MB/s write and 70MB/s read … and a lot of other people are reporting the same benchmarks.

    • A little bit shorter.

  • +1

Sounds more like a condom than a usb.

  • "Some of the items in your order cannot be shipped to the selected address. Please select a new address to see your estimated order total." To Gold Coast. Did I miss something?

Edit: Let me go through the 'proceed to checkout' link, but not through 'My Cart.' Weird.

  • Great buy! Should go well in my Macbook. Currently frustrated with the limited size of the Apple SSDs.

  • +5

FYI - over 200 voted it 1 or 2 star mostly due to excessive heating which may damage usb port
Can anyone testify about this when used over several hours of transferring/accessing?
Can potentially get very hot even when idle

Would like to know as well, was just about to hit the checkout button but decided to check out the reviews first.

Buyers beware, some reviews indicate that this drive won't work in car stereos:

An unbelievably cheap deal like this is worthless if it causes permanent damage to your ports/system.

      • This is what turned me off the other deal

      • +5

They probably never formatted it from ExFat to Fat32? Ive got a 64gb in my car and it worked after I formatted it to Fat32

        • Yep, the car stereo probably couldn't read the ExFat format.

FAT32 has a maximum file size of 4Gbytes, so a FAT32 drive can't hold a standard 4.7Gbyte DVD ISO. That's probably why these drive are formatted ExFat.

If you don't find the maximum file size to be a limitation, then FAT32 is fine. I reformatted mine to FAT32 too, using Linux.

        • If you read the reviews, they can play files but there are playback/skipping issues. So it's not format related.

        • @atlas: I've got a 64gb Sandisk Ultra Fit and it works fine in my car stereo no issues at all, maybe it's not compatible with certain devices?

    • +3

I have the 64G version, and a couple of days ago I copied 16G of photos to the drive. I did a safe remove and then unplugged the drive, it was quite warm, but I could hold the metal part firmly between thumb and forefinger with a tiny bit of discomfort. I'd estimate 50 to 60 degrees centigrade.

I've held much hotter cups of tea!

In normal use, it gets about as warm as a person with a fever, maybe 40 degrees.

I have encountered laptops which make their USB sockets very warm, perhaps because they are near the CPU's heat exhaust. Using one of these drives in such a USB socket might reach the high temperatures reported.

      • Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated!

  • Bought, thanks OP

What do you guys put on these things? All my photos are in the cloud…music is via spotify…movies on 1.5TB USB3 HDD…what else is there?

    • +1

Porn on the go. For those who are on the move without reliable 4G connections.

    • +3

Some people have expensive internet, and don't use cloud storage nor streaming services. If your only internet access was via Telstra 3G/4G, think how much it would cost just to upload your files to the cloud, let alone use streaming services.

    • I plug it in to my router, to use as a temp file share for my devices.

    • I'll use it further increase the storage capacity of the measly 128GB on my ultrabook. I already have a 128GB SD card from another deal permanently in there but this was even cheaper and uses a different port.

  • +2

I was going to buy it because of the low cost, then I realised I don't actually need it, shame.

    • +1

I was going to buy it because of the low cost, then I realised I have a few more USB flash drives still sealed in packaging…shame.
