Adding 12v Output

Hi guys,

I would like a 12v output onto a 1 year old corolla sport 2014. So far i have read that splicing into the original wiring is bad, so i figured i should probably get it done at a mechanic. What price range should i be seeking out?

Edit: this is for the dashcam. I don't mind a good hardwiring tutorial either.

  • I hardwired mine into the map lights using a 5v step down converter running the usb out under the hoodliner. If your not keen doing your own wiring better let a auto lecy do it

    • the 5v step down converter. Where did you get it from? Jaycar and that? or from ebay?

    • Is this tapped into the fusebox? or just attached to the light?

You can go to the fuse box if you have good access or just tap into the map light wiring.

I used a 5V converter similar to the one in nocure's link with an added piggyback fuse tap holder like this one (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/10Pcs-12-24V-ATM-APM-Add-A-Circui…). There are a few types of automotive fuse so be sure to check which type is used in your 2014 Corolla.

To use the piggyback holder, in the fuse box near the steering column, plug it into an empty fuse slot that has 12V power.

  • For a dash cam, just splice it in. They don't use much power do you won't overload the circuit.

Different story f you are going to run a heavy load like a fridge or hi power amp. Then you need to run separate lines and fuses.

  • You can use the step down converter that comes with the dashcam.
i.e. the part that goes into the cigarette lighter contains the 5V step down converter.

If your handy with wiring, you can connect externally by soldering or taking it apart and splicing internally onto the 12V wires.
