Windows 10 - Is It Really Better?

So is it really better? What exactly?

No fanboyism please. As unbiased as you can.

Boots faster? C'mon…you can't even scratch yourself properly in 4 seconds or less. Besides, this time can be used to gather your thoughts. C'mon, lets try harder.

DirectX12 seems like a legitimate improvement, if you are an extreme gamer, and assume developers are going to make dedicated apps instead of console ports. DX12 what?? Most people aren't in this category either.

So what exactly is better?

10 is a higher/newer number, so it is obviously better.

I find it fairly good so far.
linking the Cortina assistant, also overall seems to run smooth and sleek but time will tell.
As for better it is each to their own some will love it some will hate it.

I personally like Windows 10 on my Surface Pro because I like the UI changes. While it did hide the control panel away for setting that's close to what's on Windows Phone, I think this decision makes the UI feel more unified and less messy (to current UI) as a result. I use search function all the time, so having search on the task bar is a change that I like. Action Centre also brings notification bar like experience on Windows tablets as well. Overall, I like the UI changes for my Surface Pro, UI changes made the experience more tablet like for my tablet. I personally think the UI is what it should've been in Windows 8. For me, Windows 10 UI doesn't feel like not half baked idea that's neither desktop UI nor tablet UI.

I haven't use it on desktop for long enough to give definitive answers, but I don't think I will be able to give an unbiased answer on it anyways; I actually didn't care about the metro UI that much and used some of the metro apps on the desktop (Reading off PDF files using the Reader app, while using split screen, made my job easier).

There are few things I dislike about Windows 10. I don't like how they've changed the split screen mode (I cannot use it on desktop mode), how you cannot use Win + arrow key for split screen, it's harder to change the settings on metro apps because now we have to click on the top left corner, instead of dragging from right hand side. I think it's draining the battery at slightly faster rate (5%~10% faster than before maybe?), that said, I haven't used it long enough, so I am too certain. Bugs, instability and all the joys that newly released OS brings do come with Windows 10 as well.

It feels faster can easily be a placebo effect (or from the fact that I've resetted the PC) so I am not going to go there.

That said, I personally like Windows 10 more that Windows 8.1, but I don't think I can say it's better than the other (for me it's better, but I can see why some people would hate to see these changes easily).

TL;DR, I like UI changes, but there are few changes I don't like. Overall Windows 10 is better for me (compared to Windows 8.1), though I cannot say that for all people as it's mainly based on UI changes (and it's preferential thing).

    • That Windows key+arrow key thing is epic! XD

I am on a PC, so I don't particularly care.

Saddest part is that I used it all the time on desktop, it really really helped with my work (reading off PDF files while typing things from it). I really don't like what they've done, I wish they've gave the option to use a metro app like a metro app from Windows 8 on desktop mode.

I'll do some extensive benchmarking over the next few days, but honestly, it's really very much the same thing.

People love finding things to complain about, but I've never had a problem with any of the previous Windows.

Think what you want of Metro, but it's easy enough to disable and never see again and W8 is generally superior to W7 in terms of performance, efficiency with resources, speed, bootup times and various features (e.g. the superior copy dialog, integration and syncing with MS account)…etc.

W7 was superior to Vista, which was superior to XP. People hated on Vista at the time but that's because their hardware just wasn't ready, especially graphics wise, so Vista was sluggish and unresponsive.

Drivers area genuine issue sometimes but I don't use anything rare or legacy enough that it becomes an issue.

All-in-all, I'm pretty indifferent to W10, it's pretty similar to W8.1 which I've used ever since release, it works, it does what I want it to, what more could I ask for?

It's faster(not just boot up times), improved start menu, apps, no more start screen or charms, better ui(subjective), Cortana, Action Center, Virtual desktops, osx-like trackpad gestures, and improved command prompt.

    • Thanks. Tempted to try it on my laptop. Thanks for the response.

      • Just be warned, it's a bit buggy.

        • Thanks again, i'll delay my plans for a couple of weeks :D

  • all the good things about windows 7 and 8.1 and none of the terrible windows 8.1 interface.

    been great for gaming though.

When will enterprise level users switch to windows 10? I try to follow what my uni runs for office and windows and so far mine hasn't upgraded yet. Dad's workplace has some machines still running XP lol.

if you want to see an operating system that boots quickly you should try installing windows 95 on a modern computer. it is almost instantaneous.

    • Do you remember DOS 3.3. Lightening fast on even old computers :P

LOL - aren't you forgetting the 8K block memory check before the BIOS even considered hunting around to see if the old ST506/412 was present and had kicked itself out of stiction…

It badly needs a way to at least adjust the mail text size its huge, they give you the ability to adjust every thing larger but not smaller, seems stupid.

    • Start->Settings->System->Display has a slider to change text size. Or are you saying that there is no way to reduce sizes below 100%?

      • I have a 40" screen so yes some way to reduce overall text size would be good :) in view of monitors getting bigger it seems a bit of an over sight.
The main issue is that using windows mail the heading are huge and again no way to use smaller fonts or preferably reduce all of it, I used Thunderbird previously and there was at least double the data on screen, I have stopped using it as it seems to struggle with large image files.

  • The boot-up time is really good.
