Nintendo Wii Bundle - Better Deals Pre or Post Xmas ?

Looking at getting a Wii bundle. Quite a few sales on atm.

Anyone know or think there might be better bargains with the Boxing Day sales ?

  • I've been wondering about this in general. It seems that many companies have brought their sales forward to be pre-xmas sales. Will this lead to a very slow January for retailers and therefore some good bargains in Jan. Any comments?

  • It all depends on the the overal situation,
forcasts for Xmas are placed in October,
stock is brought into meet the forcast,
if its less than expected there will be excess stock, therfore big sales after Xmas,
if demand meets the supply after Xmas sales will be average,

very hard to say, go into your local harvey norman, DSE, JB, or local electronic dealer and ask, how is this Xmas, is what you expected? whats management say?
then you will know, if there will be big sales or not.
There is no other way to know.

  • There have been a few media stories regarding this that have said the sales offered this year (pre-xmas) have been bigger (in discount) than any other year in order to keep retail sales figures high. I'm not sure what that will mean for post xmas sales though.

Option 1: Offer even better discounts in an effort to keep the dollars flowing but with smaller margins/profit.

Option 2: Post xmas specials aren't as good so the retailers can boost their profits to compensate for the greater discounts already offered prior to xmas.

Sorry it's not really a solution, just my thoughts.

  • What are peoples expectations going to be?

Most will think that post-Christmas prices will be cheaper; and so they should.
Many electronics have been coming down in price (by as much as 40%) due to the stronger AUD-to-USD.

As for the Wii, it should have a regular price of $299 in the AUS market.
Just buy it when you need it.
You'll know when the time is right (the perfect bundle for you might appear).

I just hope its for your kids and not yourself.
Many adult Wii owners regret their purchase and end up getting rid of their Wii's.

    • "Many adult Wii owners regret their purchase and end up getting rid of their Wii’s."

      That's me.

      • Its actually for my 5 year old son.

      • "Many adult Wii owners regret their purchase and end up getting rid of their Wii’s"

Why's that? I'm thinking of getting one for myself…

I am expecting post Xmas sales to be bigger and am personally willing to wait for them unless I really need the item pre-Xmas.

        • Wii functions are gimmicky; it's good for kids. If adults buy the Wii for the games, then generally they will regret their purchase, because Wii games are mostly boring, repetitive and crappy.
Real games without the gimmicky swaying of hands are just that: real games. The games look nicer, so it's easier to be immersed in a game, and the online content is good too. I have 3 friends who own Wiis (who also own PS3s or 360s) - they played the Wii for a few weeks and got bored of it. One's sold his, and the other two do not play with their Wiis anymore.

          • @shiny1: A related opinion was expressed on bit-tech.net recently:-

Going after a new audience was initially a good strategy for Nintendo with the Wii, and I know many Wii owners who have never owned a console before, including my parents. […]

The problem is that people who aren’t really into gaming aren’t going to stick with it when the money runs out, and I know plenty of casual Wii owners who haven’t touched their console for over a year (I’m not one of them, by the way). Unlike committed gamers such as you and me, casual gamers don’t count down the days until the release from Valve.

This is a problem for Nintendo, as it’s painted itself into a casual gaming corner that’s not very attractive to gaming enthusiasts; the exact people that you need to pull a gaming company through a recession when everyone else deserts you.

  • +2

Boxing day sales are often also pre-planed, its the weeks later that the bargains are more likely to appear, stock that is slow or overstocked will start to sell in the new year - when the true clearance will go.

AS expectations rise each year for the sales - pre-christmas sales will start earlier.

  • Going by last year's game console prices, pre-christmas was definitely better than post christmas..
Pre-Christmas have bonus games that disappear after Christmas.
This year Game stores seem to be heavily discounting games as well prior to Christmas. Last year game prices post-Christmas were abysmal!
(I purchased my first 360 before Christmas last year, so was watching prices afterwards reasonably closely)

    • Absolutely agree. I also got my 360 bundle last year before christmas, a pro console with 4 games for $400. It's funny because it's been a whole year and i've barely seen a better deal on a 360 bundle in all that time. It's only now you can get the elite also with 4 games for about the same price finally. At the time i wasn't sure whether i should wait till post-christmas thinking i might get it for cheaper, but as scuba pointed out the free games disappeared, and im very glad i got it pre-christmas.
