Petrol in Melbourne Today (31/07/2015)

Hi guys

I passed by a few petrol kiosk on my way to work, and noted that petrol price rose from 1.21/litre to 1.49/litre.
Oil price has dropped for the pass month.
AUD has fallen but still no justification of petrol price this high?

Who determines the price we pay as consumers?
And where can we make a complaint?

Cheers

  • 1.19 on the Gold Coast, bet it 20cents more tomorrow.

Price was $1.49 a month ago, and as you said oil price has dropped but the AUD has fallen so it would make sense being similar to last month

  • Who determines the price we pay as consumers?

The consumer who is prepared to pay

And where can we make a complaint?

    Here at Ozbargain

Anything else and you are deluding yourself. Its market forces, has been and always will be. The Oil companies are in it for the dollars they can make, not whether on not it upsets you - and BTW me. Sorry 😡

    • Mate

Who determins the price we pay as consumers?
"The consumer who is prepared to pay"

I am not prepared to pay petrol at that high price considering that oil price has dropped more than 50% (currently USD47/ barrel). The last time petrol hit 1.60/litre was when oil price was around $110/barrel.
If you are happy to pay at that price, so be it. That in my opinion is NAIVITY as you are willing to be ripped off.
I myself will look for other alternative, like BP or United petrol kiosk.

And where can we make a complaint?
      "Here at Ozbargain"

I am not here to make a complain in Ozbargain but I am asking if anyone knows how I can do that.
If you are not willing to offer any constructive suggestion, maybe you shouldnt answer at all.

You said that its market forces that drove the price from 1.21 to 1.49.
Mate, Iran has now flooded the market with millions of barrels of oil a day.
Thus, oil price should be going down.

Before you start replying to ppl's message with hostility and babbling like a headless chook, use some brains pls.

Your arrogance will get you nowhere.

      • Your arrogance will get you nowhere.

        No need to be offensive!!

I am sorry that I just pointed out the truth to you.

There is NO price regulator for fuel other than the consumer. You now admit that yourself by saying you will buy it elsewhere. You say BP, well fine maybe for you, but near me BP is Always the more expensive.

If you have an alternative to buying petrol, then ok. Otherwise you like the rest of us either pay or go without.

And where can we make a complaint?

Since there is no regulator, then there is no one to complain to other than the general population via sites like this.

Sorry if but being blunt and truthful offends you.

        Then dont ask the questions.

  • The last time the oil price was where it is now, the AUD was lower against the USD but the price at the pump was under $1 per litre. I'd need to look up the increase in the fuel excise (then add GST on top) but I am pretty sure we are worse off now (perhaps just inflation in everything we need).

Sydney seems to be having the same extreme price jumps, 1.22p/l in the morning, 1.39p/l in the evening. Sometimes im driving with the fuel light on until the cycle turns, other times im refueling at 3/4 full to make sure i'm not caught out.

Just to cover this off, when I fill my tank its usually 35L, for the example above; 17 cents x 35L = $5.95 saving.
