Got a dud Lenovo K3 Note from GeekBuying. What to do?

Hi all,

So I took the plunge and bought the Lenovo K3 Note from GeekBuying because the phone had good reviews, and I'd previously had a good experience buying Xiaomi earphones from them.

Sadly, the phone I was sent is a dud.

The sticker seal on the box was already broken, and it looks like someone has rooted the phone (from what I've read online, this would be to install Google Play store). AVG antivirus reported several installed apps as threats.

However, The real problem is the phone is now stuck on the logo screen after rebooting. It seems to be bootlooping/softbricked.

I don't have high hopes for tech support from GeekBuying (have sent an email) so was wondering what I could try and do to salvage the phone?

Cheers
Chris

The sticker seal on the box was already broken,

    There's your first clue…raise a PayPal dispute.

    • Nothing wrong with the broken seal. They only do it to change the Chinese ROM installation.

      • New seal then …

        • Mate, you don't buy these phones online do you? Even Kogan do this and declare this. I've bought about 10 Chinaphones in the last couple of months for family and every one had the seal opened. Most sellers if not all declare this in their T&C. Even if they don't its a given. If a Chinaphone is open, its a good thing as its been re-tested to ensure a dud is not sent so they get no PapPal claims…. Sheesh!

All is not lost, if the phone is bricked from a bad flash it's usually possible to get into the recovery mode and reflash the ROM.

you NEED to have a new ROM installed as whoever has jailbroken the phone has taken the liberty to preload it with some malware.

Recently bought a dual boot tablet from geekbuying, the original box was opened (plastic security seals broken) and a few thing not happening. Contacting geekbuying support they assured me it was opened by their QA staff to test and update a few things prior to shipping.

That may explain the open box bit.
I found support good , prompt and very willing to assist, of course there is always a chance of miscommunication due to language

gb does open the boxes to test before shipping and to change the default language from chinese to english. they also put the screen protectors that i ordered as an extra item in the boxes.

Hi everyone, quick update: XDA is very daunting. But I've successfully flashed one of the custom roms and now it's behaving nicely. Took 6 hours!
