http://arstechnica.com/security/2015/07/950-million-android-…

ROFL, rubbish smartphones - Android is at the top of the joke - fragmented bloated OS with 50 million different OEMs good luck getting updates especially when attached to rubbish low end hardware.

Yeah, aren't Android just the worst?

While I dislike the obvious intent behind posting this, it's disconcerning. It actually sounds fairly severe and could affect a lot of Android users.
Long story short, the vulnerability resides in "Stagefright," an Android code library that processes several widely used media formats.
What you could do to prevent getting affected by media files on text messages at least, is by preventing MMS from automatically loading.
If you are using Firefox, it was vulnerable (on PC and other platforms as well) until Version 38, so I'd check upon that as well.

Btw, bringing fanboyish attitude really doesn't help conveying what you wanna convey; Apple doesn't love you, they love your money.

    • Not too sure if this would help avoid this issue, but here is a set of instructions to turn off auto downloading for MMS

      Enabling the MMS messages
      * Open the messaging client of your choice
      * Enter the Settings option
      * Simply check the Auto retrieve button to turn on or off

      Source

    • "Apple doesn't love you, they love your money."

And fools and their money are soon parted, see above apple fanboy for evidence

      • Actually, I think I was too quick to judge (since he seems to be more of a caveman than a fanboy from other comments he've posted).
This is judging from how he believes education is useless and blah (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/204167#comment-2935222).

I shouldn't have judged so quickly; he reminded me too much of an apple fanboy. I hate fanboys in general, they make the market boring.

For now it would be wise to disable MMS preview on your messaging app. For Hangout, you go to Settings -> SMS -> uncheck "Auto retrieve MMS".

  • "Android is designed with a security sandbox that prevents most apps from being able to access data used by other apps. That goes a long way to containing the damage Stagefright and similar code-execution exploits can do. In theory, for instance, it should prevent Stagefright exploits from sniffing login credentials used by a properly designed banking app. "

Windows Phone/Windows Mobile 10 welcomes more buyers :D

    • :) We now even have the Boost app (at least that was what the email I've received from MS was saying). Windows Phone are actually not that bad, if you can look past the lack of the apps and rather immature OS (which seems to be being fixed on Windows 10 Mobile). I might go back to it depending on how things go, at least my old phone is on the middle to flagship range spec for another gen at least.

Windows Phone is a dead OS. No once cares, even MS has fired near 8000 mobile phone employees. All the current range is running off old crap Snapdragon 200/400 with a 1GB RAM if that. Pointless. Never mind the lack of apps. Microsoft wants an ecosystem but Microsoft ain't Apple.

        • Windows phone isn't a dead OS? Windows 10 mobile is just around the corner too, which is starting to come together nicely, especially with the integration with Windows10 Unified. Windows phone OS runs fine on those snapdragons and RAM anyway, so why does it matter? Have you even used them?

Apps is another issue but hopefully it can start to change again with Win10, but i'll wait and see on that one first.

It depends on where you sit on the table I think. Personally speaking, I think the Lumia phones are alright other than the RAM and the SoC department. The OS is very well optimised (from your perspective, it might be seen as restrictive on multitasking), I personally think the budget line is very decent because of that.

Hardware wise, other than SoC and RAM, I find most of the Lumia range to be decent for its price, i.e. camera, build quality etc. Sort of stemming from that whole OS is focused on the optimisation, they run rather well for their SoC and RAM. I found my older Lumia phone to be stand fairly well compared to my current Android phone, which you would not expect from the spec differences. Though it pretty much means that I see no point in grabbing a flagship of the current gen.

In short, I see Windows Phone to be decent back up phones. Budget line is decent enough, they runs fine (by limiting multitasking ability and what not) for their spec yaddi yadda. If only MS wasn't run by people who sees WP as a side business more than anything, it may have become a major OS; They could've done so much when they had the advantage (Windows Mobile) and with Windows OS.

        • Haha windows phone is dead….what crack are you on?
Windows 10 gets released today and soon after it will be released for mobiles to the masses.

        • @Damonator84: mobiles version will be released far later, late Q3 or early Q4 I think.

        • @AznMitch:
Yeah. That's soon after. If you want a taste become an insider :)

        • @Damonator84: I was, until my gf broke her phone and needed a spare phone. I still think it needs fair bit of work done before it's polished enough for release (though that's my opinion).

        • @AznMitch: I agree but the separation of the outlook app is a fine piece. But then… Continuum…should be brilliant at the start of next year.

        • @Damonator84: I honestly think it's the last chance that MS has for WP to become a major OS. They've blown the first one when they did not utilise the power when Windows CE were majorly used. Second one by not incorporating Windows experience with Windows Phone (i.e. What Apple did with Yosemite and iOS). I personally see this hype as a last gambit for MS, if they flop, I don't think they will have any more "windows"(heh) to become a major OS.

Was provided an iPad air by employer for work. After using it for a day was reminded how much I detest apple crap. Apps that are customizable on Android platform are crippled on iPad. Enjoy the walled garden.

Oh, i forgot to mention… iTunes. 'nuf said.

    • I honestly think MTP is not much better (it's better, but not by much).

No, I don't want to convert the files, yes, just copy them over.

Another vulnerability that allows local app or malicious website to render and Android 4.3+ device unusable. As reported on Trend Micro

We have discovered a vulnerability in Android that can render a phone apparently dead – silent, unable to make calls, with a lifeless screen. This vulnerability is present from Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) up to the current version, Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop).

"silent, unable to make calls, with a lifeless screen" — my Nexus 4 seems to have no problem achieving that every now and then without the exploit.

    It's called lollipop.How do I go back?

  • Ah the good old fanboy wars. OP, remember the Fappening ?
