Melbourne Airport to Monash (Clayton) - Sydneysider!

Hi friends,
Just after some advice from our Melbournian counterparts. I have to get to Monash Clayton Campus by 9am on a Saturday in September for a conference. I'm from Sydney, and ideally I'd like to get in early that morning and leave that day. Is this realistic? It seems a bit of a trek. Not being familiar with Melbourne at all, it seems I would need to get the Skybus to southern cross station, then a train to clayton. The plane I would catch is set to land at 7.45 in Melbourne. Do you think, realistically, that it's possible to get there on time or am I better off staying the night on Friday?

Many thanks!

  • Probably better coming the day before as you have to go across town in rush hour traffic and you won't make it.

Morning flights can be easily delayed by hours because of fog in Melbourne.

    • It's a Saturday that they arrive though so traffic should be light at that hour.

I'd say if the flight arrives on time AND you take a cab you'll make it. If you take skybus/public transport you won't. A cab would be around $100-120 I'd estimate.

Maybe if you know someone else travelling for the conference you could split the cab fare. Get enough people and it'll be barely more than skybus+train ticket.

September is the beginning of spring, hopefully fog hasn't set in but you never know - I've been on flights that have been cancelled/diverted during winter.

      • It is a 45 minute trip without traffic on the toll way, add another 10-15 minutes if you take the toll-free roads so it is cutting it close.

Take into account disembarking the aircraft and making your way to get a taxi, worse yet if you have checked luggage.

At best you'll have 15 minutes to spare, best case scenario.

  • You would get train to huntingdale station then you would need a bus from there to monash campus. I think the earliest you could possibly get there is 9:30

which train? I don't think there is any train that runs from airport.

      • I mean after getting skybus to southern cross, just in case OP thinks campus is close to Clayton station when really you need to get off at Huntingdale station then get a bus.

  • Uber!

  • I live 3 minutes from the airport and it takes exactly 2 hours by PT to get to Monash Clayton. Perhaps catch a cab from airport to the university, then PT/Skybus it back to the airport.

Friday Night XPT ex Central to Southern Cross (arr. 07.25am)
then Train ex Southern Cross to Flinders Street Station, then change to
Pakenham train, disembark @ Huntingdale Station and jump on a Route 900 Bus,
disembark @ Monash Uni Interchange/Wellington Rd (Clayton) Platform Bay 7.
    Arrive 08.50am Saturday. Job Done.

  • you'd be pushing the 7:45 arrival (possible delays) and getting to clayton by 9:00

what about hiring a car? it's a pretty straightforward drive (freeways) and with sat nav.

  • Stay in Melbourne the night before and check out the city. You may end up too stressed on Saturday to enjoy your conference

Too hard to do, air bnb it on Friday, great places to stay in the area and cheap as well, can get away with $40 accommodation. Save you the stress and possibility of missing conference.

  • faster to rent a car from airport :) but u probably need to arrive earlier like 7 am just to be safe. Melb airport to clayton is around 40 mins without traffic via toll

    it's expensive to take taxi!
and it's too slow taking skybus / public transport.

  • What time is "on time"? With public transport, if it's 9:00 I don't think it's realistic. If it's 10:00 then maybe. You also have to take into account how long it takes you to go from plane -> sky bus, and then from sky bus -> train platform + train wait times -> bus wait times (buses generally run less frequently on weekends as well). Oh and getting lost time.

You can use the journey planner here to see the journey from southern cross station to monash uni.
You'd also need to buy a myki card to use on the metro trains and buses. Also Melb PT is not always completely reliable so if punctuality is vital and you'd be really rushed I wouldn't take the risk.

The car rental option sounds good to consider if possible (though I don't know how much it'd cost)

  • thanks for all your replies, super helpful!!Looks like night before is best bet. thanks for station tips too!! Awesome.
