  • 160MWh/annum = 438 kWh/day

Who'd use over that, that wasn't running a commercial hydro setup from home?

In the gold rush days of bitcoin mining, it was profitable to run mining machines at home 24/7 which would consume that much energy.

  • Looks good, thanks. If I was single I would try to survive with basically no power - the latest raise by AGL (QLD): $1.30 a day just to have electricity.

    • Origin has also increased the daily charge to $1.28 per day (from around $0.88) . And the cost per Kwh on all tariffs has also increased. The best thing would be to find the way to be off the grid.

  • This appears the be SA only?

As always, compare the discounted rate with other suppliers first - something like this might sound good at face value, but if it's a discount from an already inflated rate, then it may still be more expensive than the alternatives. The Origin flat rate in Vic for United Energy is $0.25, but for Momentum it's $0.16 (http://www.originenergy.com.au/content/dam/origin/residentia… versus http://www.momentumenergy.com.au/system/files/documents/PPIS…). Go peak/off peak the cost could be $0.34/$0.13 versus $0.21/$0.07. What it will cost you will depend a lot on all sorts of variables such as distributor and supply type (fixed rate, flexible rate/peak/offpeak/etc), but basically - again - don't take these sorts of offers at face value.

Need to update the OP title to SA

      Done. Thanks.

      • And maybe get rid of NSW? Or is there a promo I can't find for NSW?

        • They're all different:

SA: Half off then 16% discount on electricity, 12% on gas

NSW: Half off then 15% discount on electricity, 12% on gas

VIC: No half off. 6% discount on electricity, 3% on gas.

          @whodidthat: Thanks so much!

  • How to get this deal if you are already with Origin?

    • If you are already with them, sign in to your account online and look at what other discount options are available. You can switch around anytime.

      • Which option would this fall under?
Can't seem to find the option after I log on.

        • You won't find one offering half price - they more or less say if you already have an account bars you from it:

          Already with us?

Origin customers, if you already have either an electricity or natural gas account for your home with us, switch your other fuel (electricity or natural gas) to us by 31 August 2015 and pay only half of our electricity usage and supply charges for 3 months. That’s 50% off for 3 months.

  • You can't if you are already with Origin for both electricity and gas. But if you are only with them for one of the services, you can sign up for the other service and be eligible for the offer.

I wondered about that too, given its a 12 month contract can I cancel after 3 months? Anyone know? Rental ends then.

  • The charges are difficult to work out… Currently with EnergyAustralia, electricity, ongoing 18% off:

    Electricity rates Incl. GST
First 10.9589 kWh of Peak usage per day 24.178 c/kWh
Next 10.9589 kWh of Peak usage per day 23.848 c/kWh
Balance of Peak daily usage > 21.9178 kWh 23.54 c/kWh
Electricity Supply Charge per day $0.726

    Origin electricity, ongoing 15% off:

Domestic / Domestic Continuous Supply / Domestic All Time
Peak Usage first 10.9589 kWh per day
    23.331 c/kWh

Peak Usage next 10.9589 kWh per day
    22.704 c/kWh

    Remaining Usage
    22.572 c/kWh

    Supply Charge
    83.171 c/day

Origin's rates are slightly lower but the supply charge is higher and the discount percent is lower. With 50% off it's probably a good deal but not sure if it's a good deal ongoing.

    • I just switched. With the 50% off it'll be a good deal. If the discount doesn't add up ongoing you can always switch again at the earliest possible time.

I took the same approach ;)
