  • Is this good enough for recording HD video on a Canon 5D Mark II?

    • +1

      edit: Disregard, you need CompactFlash.
      It should be.
This SD card has a minimum write speed of 10MB/s. Canon 5D Mark II records 1080p video at 4.8 MB/s.

    • +2

5D MkII uses the larger CF (Compact Flash) cards, so this won't work straight off the bat unless you use an SD-to-CF adapter.

This card speed won't be sufficient for MagicLantern RAW recording. As for standard 1080p recording, it will depend on the real speed of the adapter.

      • Sorry, I forgot to note that I do have the CF to SD adapter that's required. Just not sure what speed the adapter transfers at.

I don't shoot RAW video through Magic Lantern though. I don't feel the need to.

        • Well, there is one sure way to find out if it works, and it only costs $32 :)

When I looked into adapters a few years ago, the reports weren't fantastic. Slow for photos and video didn't work.

Just took a squizz on B&H, and in the reviews of this US$11.95 SD-HC-XC to CF Type II Adapter, someone reports their "read and write speeds are limited to 25 MB/sec". So this recent adapter should be fine for 5D MkII 1080p recording. (I might get myself an adapter and dust off my 5D :)

You own that camera? You should know it uses CF cards, not SD.

You may be able to use a SD to CF adapter, but you would be better of just ponying up the dosh for a card designed for your camera than frankensteining something that may not even work to save a few dollars.

Thrift knows what he's talking about.

  • Another great deal, thanks TA!

  • I still haven't received the Samsung SD card from 2 promotions back.

    • +3

You mean microSD? Please PM Francesca with the details. She'll be onto it in a flash.

      • Thanks have done. Just realised it was ordered on the 2nd of this month, quite a while ago.

        • I haven't received mine either. Just pm'd Francesca. It's easy to lose track of some of these.

          @solar:
Just wanted to say that PC Byte sent an additional card by registered post, which was excellent customer service. On top of that, my neighbour popped over on the weekend with the original card which had been delivered incorrectly - so PC Byte hadn't missed the first one at all. Extra card on it's way back and happy for such good service.

          @solar: Thank you :)

  • PERFECT for dashcams!

    • +3

If your dashcam can support 64GB cards. Some are notoriously difficult.

Does your dashcam use SD, rather than the smaller MicroSD?

    • +2

I've not seen any dash cams that take SD cards, I thought they all took microSD cards?

      • +1

I have one that is SD, but most are MicroSD

      • mine are dvr027's. they only take SDs

  • +3

Sorry, got a ton, thanks to you.

    …Can't be arSD

    (I know, it's a stretch.)

  • How long does delivery usually take?

    • +1

For me, delivery to metro Sydney is overnight (usually ~17 hours :). Sent as a standard letter, it's very fast. But it depends how far out in the Way you are.

    • +1

      Hi Jubba,

Delivery within NSW takes 1-3 business days.
Delivery to the other states take 3-5 business days.

Thank you Thrift for helping out :)

      Cheers
      Francesca

  • Guess this would be a good fit for the tronsmart boxes ?

  • Awesome!

So if I want to order 2 do I need to place two seperate orders? Should I use a different postal address etc or doesn't it matter

  • Can you get a deal for a fast 128gb full SD card (not micro)?

    • -1

Why not micro? Then you can use the SD sleeve pin adapter, and you have a card that works in both MicroSD and SD supported devices.

      • -3

What about extra heat the adapter generates?

"In some cases, the signal integrity of SD cards can be marginal - the signals have to come off the SoC, down the PCB traces, through the socket, and into the SD card. SD cards, especially fast cards, can be clocked at up to 100MHz. MicroSD adaptors are often designed to be as cheap as possible, and may make the signal integrity worse. For example, I have a £1 USB card reader that will read MicroSD in its own dedicated MicroSD slot, but not in an adaptor in the normal SD slot (which reads full SD cards just fine). If you open up an adaptor, you find it's just a series of metal pins in plastic - no shielding or any other signal protection."

        • What was the measured heat difference between the MicroSD and SD?

What was the measured signal loss?

(preferably using a SanDisk or Samsung adapter, rather than a 10 cent cheapie)

        • @Thrift:
It's very hard to explain to laymen but it's similar to putting a sock on a foot
there is a heat difference I just can't articulate it
          I didn't neg you

There are reports of issues with 3ds and rumours of raw performance when taking burst raws

        • +2

@thelastnoob: I understand what you're saying about the heat dissipation, and I know some people have experience warped cards/adapters and performance issues in certain circumstances, but I haven't heard of it happening to name brand cards in compliant devices in regular situations (I haven't searched for problems though).

The Stack Exchange answer doesn't explain his testing process, he just mentions one situation where he's using a £1 USB card reader.

It sounds like there are certain situations where an adapter would not be appropriate. (Which is a perfectly fine answer to the question, "Why not microSD in an adapter?"). I haven't experienced any problems writing 12.5MB/s video for hours, and immediately reading the gigabyte files back off the card. (The cameras overheat though)

          I didn't neg you either.

I'll wait for the previous Evo32gb microSD again in the future - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/202778

  • thanks OP!

  • +2

i would like sandisk extreme 128gb SD card pretty please :)

  • +1

Is this the best 64GB SD card out there at the moment?

  • Any deals for a compact flash card?

  • Aw, no more microSD's?

    • +2

Just wait a few minutes :D

  • Thanks TA, just the one I've been waiting for!

  • Thanks, grabbed one :)

  • Waiting patiently for a XQD sale…. ;_;

Damn you Nikon and going with a new proprietary card format. I will say however it is bloody fast though…

    • +1

Wow — I had to look up XQD because I had never heard of it…. I wonder where this places CFAST cards? Yet another standard to further muddy the waters and confuse or limit consumers.

I don't know if the market can sustain so many different high speed formats moving forward, Might be like Beta, HD-DVD, Memory Stick, xD?.

For digital still photos I would think either SD / CF with a very generous internal buffer would be sufficient for sustained burst modes?

      • On paper XQD is the superior format as it is based off PCI-Express as opposed to CFast being based off SATA. This allows greater headroom as we can see that SSDs have already saturated the SATA 3 standard and are now looking for PCI-E solution.

It seems that XQD was picked up by the Compactflash Association but barely anything apart from the Nikon D4 and D4s uses it.

The speed comes in very useful despite a 200 shot buffer and shooting in continuous high at 11 fps.

  • Is this card working on my Canon 60D?

    • +1

Yes, Canon 60D uses SD memory cards.
Good for still images and video.

  • Any deals on 64GB Micro SD cards??

  • Perfect for using it in my car. Thanks.
