Netflix subscription- have you changed it to Australia?

I'm sure a lot of ozbargainers would have subscribed for Netflix before it's Australian launch. Have you now changed your subscription to Australia given the monthly fee payments are not subject to the exchange rate. Is there any disadvantage in doing so given swapping the regions aren't that difficult? I remember getflix recommended to keeping the U.S. Subscription at the time of Australian launch was one reason I didn't bother at that time.

I am subscribed via Netflix Australia but I switch my location back and forth via Getflix - we have some great Aussie shows that aren't on the US Netflix but there is a HEAP on the US Netflix that we don't have.

  • If you're on an older plan, the price difference is still cheaper for what you get more for your money.
My $US7.99 plan (currently $A10.70) can have 2 simultaneous users streaming HD. To get the same "value" I'd need to pay $A11.99.

  • I'm still on the US subscription, although I usually watch the UK version via Getflix.

    • What's good on the UK version? I haven't tried it yet.

      • Seems to have more newer movies.

made the decision to support the Australian arm of netflix (may encourage them to provide more content)

I did the same. It's Downloads are quota free on iinet.

you can still support the australian arm (sign up to australian netflix) then VPN/getflix to the US site to watch their content. i just think we have been complaining for so long that we didn't have it .. now that we do have an australian netflix we should support it ….

  • I'm on a 2 screen US account and the $8.99USD monthly fee converts to $12.57AUD (inc. 36c in "foreign fees"). For me it's not worth the hassle to move over yet and lose all my history and movies/shows saved in my list to save 58c a month (obviously depending on how the AUD is tracking).

    • You don't have to lose anything — Netflix Support can change your billing country, everything else remains intact (and is dependent on your viewing region, not your billing region)

      • I had read somewhere that you lose the My List function if you are away from your "home" region. Do you know if this is correct?

        • You still have the "My List" function. The list just changes to only show added titles which are available in that region. So if you add USA items and come back to AUS, you wont see the USA items. Nothing actually gets removed from the list so flicking back to USA will bring the items back.

        • This used to be the case… but it changed sometime last year so it now follows you.

  • I'm grandfathered in at US$7.99 and can't be bothered changing until the exchange rate makes the AU more favourable (it'd have to be ~$0.67) and/or my internet becomes fast enough for 4K (You lose the grandfathered price when you trade up, IIRC).

That and my US account got credited $191.76 due to some American Sony Bravia/Netflix promo and I'm hoping another one comes up :D

I do regularly mix and match Aussie and US Netflix though.

    • I think you have zero chance of 4k working from the U.S., you need a sustained 25mbps. My parents have a 116mbps cable connection and 4k footage sometimes dips to 1080p from the local servers

  • I just swapped a couple of days ago and use Getflix to get me the US content.

You don't even need to talk to Netflix - Just cancel your US subscription, wait for the billing period to be over, then re-subscribe via the Aus (or whatever country you want to be paying in) URL.

It was easy and I didn't lose any history or anything. In fact, I gained.. They gave me a month's free for resubscribing :D

    Cheers,

    • So to confirm, you let the US subscription expire and then signed up with the same email address to effectively reenable your account?

      • Interesting. This is why I haven't gone to an AU account because I didn't want to lose my history. It gives me good stuff.

      • Yep - it was super easy. If you have a look in your account billing area you'll see when the monthly period expires (that's US California time too, not local). For me it was 24th of July, so once that ticked over to the 25th, I just re-activated my subscription (used same email address) via the netflix.com.au site.

  • So let me summarise this

    Advantages of staying with US:
    1. Can have 2 simultaneouse users screening HD with the basic plan.
    2. No hassle in switching - no worries about loss of history (unless you manage to keep it somehow)

    Advantages of moving to Australia:
    1. lower price (depending on exchange rate)
    2. A free month for resubscribing
    3. Feel-good factor - supporting Australian netflix
    4. isps (including iinet) give free netflix downloads

Are there any others to add to this list? I didn't get the speed factor discussed above about internet needing to be fast enough for 4k (for me I'm on iinet cable so I'm sure mine is fast enough, but for most of us maybe not). Is there a difference in speed?

Quota free is irrelevant if you're using a smartDNS that supports Australia (like Unblock-us). You can just switch it to AU for quota free downloads - no need to have an Aussie account.

    • Optus also has free Netflix downloads until early 2017.

Would downloads still be free when accessing US content using Getflix?

    Go to http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/netflix
Scroll down to "How do I convert my US/UK account to Australian billing? Will I keep my watch list?"

For me it was USD$9 a month, and with the AUD falling, that is more than with the Aussie account.

You need to cancel your account, wait until it expires, and then as soon as it does, sign up again via the Australian site. You then get 1 months free.

I assume you could do this with any other location. Anyone want to do the maths and work out where the cheapest place to sign up is?

AHHH, and the OzB communiity has already done it - http://blog.ozbargain.com.au/2015/how-to-get-the-cheapest-ne…

  • I have an Australian account but have american content. It auto switches if it thinks you are in the US.
