Can You Wear Your Wedding Dress to a Close Friend's Engagement Party?

Hi :)

One of my best friends is having an all-white engagement party in November. I was planning on wearing the dress that I wore for my 10-year wedding anniversary party. So technically not my wedding dress. Its a stunning, lacy dress with a cut-out open back. It costs a little over $2000 and I'll probably never wear it again. This is the dress :

Mine has a 40cm train which I'm planning to modify so that it looks like a maxi dress. I was also planning to accessorise with a black felt hat and strappy black shoes, so that the dress look even less wedding-dressy.

My other option is to buy another all-white dress that I'll probably never wear again:(

Update: Thank you everyone for your inputs. I've decided to get another dress instead.I don't want to ruffle any feathers at the event.

I think it is a beautiful dress and if you can modify it to remove the train then I think it would look lovely.
Your friend chose to make her engagement party an 'all white' affair (my daughter would say 'racist' at this point) so she must expect people to wear stuff like this.
And your friend won't be wearing her dress so I don't see what the problem is.

      all white' affair

Don't worry. Its going to be a very multi-cultural affair :)

My daughter is 9 and has a wicked sense of humour.
        She calls everything racist.
        ;-)

Dress is beautiful. I agree with BigTed. Modify it to remove the train.

I said that the dress is beautiful. I would like to add that you will look stunning. Enjoy the engagement.

  • A few people have been saying that it would be "rude and inconsiderate" to wear that dress because the bride-to-be is petite and chubby and its supposed to be her day to shine…blah..blah..blah

Personally, I don't think she would mind. She's confident, funny, witty and has a different dress style to wiki. Last time I saw her she had a pixie pink haircut. She's cute :)

  • She is one sexy girl in the photos ;)

    HAHAHAHA.

    Digging the dress though.

There's another option: make a dress. Did you get the Quilton toilet paper deal?

    • There's a reason why she said it's not her in that pic ;)

      • Oh, I took it to mean it wasn't her in the pictures.

I suggest you take a picture of you in the dress and show it to your friend and indicate the modifications you are going to make. Tell her you will not be offended if she says she rather you don't wear it and get her opinion. It is her party after all. As a chubby petite myself I wouldn't give too hoots. (In fact I think the engagement party would be even better if people had to dress up in wedding dresses/morning suits; either their own or ones from an op shop. Imagine what some of those Op shop dresses are going to look like). Wish your friend the best.

    • Thank you :)

My friend and her fiance are on a round the world trip and won't be back for another couple of months. A few people close to her have strongly hinted that it would be best if I wore something else. I'm getting this from Asos. Its not too fancy looking and cost less than removing the train from my wedding dress. Its for the best :)

I am sure you will look lovely in whichever dress you choose to wear.

        • She will but its not fair that she has to wear a $40 dress when she has a $2000 one, that she wld much rather wear, in her wardrobe.

Its a different version of cinderella, one where the evil stepsisters win:-(

          @Jar Jar Binks:

If she would prefer to wear the $2000 dress, that is the one she should wear. She needs to be happy with her choice and she should not be concerned with what others are saying.

Less exe option deux is also a pretty dress.
I'm sure that you'll look great in it.

        Granted.

Great idea to modify it - you might find you get more opportunities to wear it again too. I don't see the issue, it's a white dress as she asked. It's not like you're going to try and outshine her in it and draw attention to yourself. She'll find her own way to be fabulous by the sounds of it.

That dress is amazing. It would be a crime to fork out money for a sub par dress.
Plus if your making changes its not going to look so much like a wedding dress.

The dress is stunning, don't waste it, I'm voting mods and rocking up, stealing the bride-to-be's thunder is not your problem

Dress is pretty. Follow Princess Kate's sterling example and give it another run.

I know that's not you in the 1st pic, but you do look remarkably like Monika Clarke in the second. Take along something like she's holding here, to the engagement party, and no-one will be the least bit perturbed by anything you have on.

Jar Jar can play frisbee / scoop poop while you swan around looking lithe & lacy.

    Sorted.

Wiki, kindly refrain from arguing with the perfect solution to your dilemma.

Can't comment on that… or I'll get in trouble.

Jar Jar will be wearing this . Might accesorise with my aviator sunnies, if I can get away with it. I have no compunction whatsoever in stealing the bride-to-be, and every other guests, including my missus's, thunder :b

Unfortunately the kids, Ewok and Darthie won't be attending the party :(

      • You had better clear that outfit photo from your browser history as well.

The outfit, however, will contrast nicely wth some groodle poop…
