I know it's in the description, but just highlighting this — it doesn't come with RAM or storage, you have to BYO.

This looks like a straight-up copy of the Gigabyte Brix.

    Compare specs here
    http://ijk.com.au/branch/ijk/product_info.php?products_id=15…

The Gigabyte Brix (J1900) retails for $190 in Au, and it has very similar specifications to it. The difference seems to be an additional USB2 port at the front of the Tronsmart, and instead of having VGA+ regular HDMI (Gigabyte Brix), it has Displayport and Mini HDMI type-A.

I think for the average buyer, you are better off buying local and getting local warranty, as well as less pain if your product happens to be DOA.

  • Is that aluminium foil on the heatsink (second last pic on geekbuying website image carousel) ?

    • From what I've been able to gather online, it would appear so. It shouldn't be a problem as it has a fan for cooling with appropriately placed vents. I can always ask Tronsmart for confirmation on the heatsink though.

    • I assume it's to direct/increase airflow.

    • Interesting replies, I was merely curious more than anything actually. Aluminium foil seems like a 'hacky' way to solve the problem of excess heat. Though people use it cool the Snapdragon 810 in phones … http://www.xda-developers.com/easy-fix-for-cpu-throttling/

  • Dare say to assist in the fan concentrating on heat sink.
    Only a guess.

  • What would the power usage of this thing be with 16GB of ram and a WD green HDD?

    Need something to run 24/7.

    • Not sure, would be pretty low.
In any case it seems it only supports 8GB max.

As mentioned above, not sure this is really a good option when compared to the Brix.

      • The Brix looks great but cheapest is $181.

What would the following be like as a server:

        http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2015-New-Arrival-Super-Mini-P…

        • Only 2 GB of RAM max, and it only does ethernet via an external dongle. No USB 3.0 either. File transfer speeds can be slow.

Not very suitable for file server if you ask me. What kind of OS and software are you going to run on it?

I would either roll with a Intel NUC or the Brix, for the best set of features, expandability, support and BIOS stability.

Dunno what kind of dodginess is involved in the production of these clone units, I would not buy one until there is a good review of it.

        • @scrimshaw: Windows. All I need to run is utorrent, plex and 2 x powered external HDD.

  • How do you install Android on this?

  • Code will possibly work for anything priced at $129 or above. Was looking to buy Orion R68 Meta Android, came up with a message not valid for orders less than $129.

    • Coupons are setup so that if items go on sale, then the coupon can't be used to reduce it even further.

      • Thanks mate. I was looking at R68 Meta. Missed out on the previous deal. I guess I will have to wait until you post another deal.
