Yum Cha 20% off @ East Ocean [Sydney, NSW]

40

Found out today that East Ocean is having a 20% off till tomorrow. We were originally going to use the 25% off voucher from entertainment book but was told restaurant is having a special discount.

Yum cha selection is pretty good. Cantonese style. In Haymarket Chinatown, Sydney.

      Agree… been there once and not going back… similar feedback from mates. average food.

    In general, at yumcha restaurants, the bill calculation is not very transparent. You don't get a tax invoice broken down by number of plates by type and by price. How do you know you really do get 20% off?

      went on Thursday, the food has gone down hill; below average.

      Have my invoice, its actually very clearly broken down by plate size & price & discount was applied.

  • why not use the 25% off voucher instead of 20%?

      He will probably use it the next time he Goes…

    I cant even remember the last time I went to East Ocean. Fell out of favour many years ago for most Chinese based patrons..

      Where to get good yumcha now? In the 90s basically any Cantonese restaurant was good.

      • So much choice now - in 90's it was all Chinatown really. Now its in most bigger Chinese inhabited suburbs like Chatswood, Hurstville, Parramatta (to a lesser extent) etc. These days Yum Cha is really a luxury meal and way more expensive than it use to be with about $25-30 per head just for lunch..

          bchliu, I think it's the Sydney tax… i find it uneasy to spend less than $30 for brunch in the weekends… all these fancy cafes popping up selling similar stuff for a not so cheap price…

          i miss the overseas days… or even in melbourne, things are slightly cheaper.

          @googleyahoo69:
          Living standards here are definitely getting out of control. Even with the crap AUD, the last visit to HK in April cost only half as much as it does here to eat out. Can get away with a table of 8 yum cha for about $70 AUD walking away very full.

      • zilver, and the eight come to mind

        • Phoenix at Westfield Pitt St (and other locations)

          @googleyahoo69:
          Phoenix reaps (or rapes) premium over every other place due to their high rent in ridiculous places (cough Westfields).

          Both of their qualities have dropped considerably. Eight is nowhere near as good as when they were originally Kam Fook.

          Need to try that Michelin place in Chatswood - Tim Ho Wan (havent tried yet).. But reviews from friends say it is overrated and hyped with a very very limited set of food.

        • @bchliu:
          yep. Tim Ho Wan's menu in Chatswood is limited, no free tea, no trolleys … kinda defeats the purpose of yum cha!

        We used to go to rockdale mostly. Above average food but good prices. 2 people $38 usually with 2-3 boxes of take away. Its in the rsl near the station.

        Still doesnt compare to one of our hk bills, 22 for 4 people was the cheapest we paid.

        Imo there is only crap, average and above average. There are no longer any exceptional yum cha places.

    Prefer yam cha myself….

  • I went today and enjoyed it, I'd rate it over Zilver and Pyrmont Fish Markets but still like Marigold best.
