  • what does this product (when mixed with post workout protein) do?
Does it help in gaining weight or cutting?

  • +1

    Hello mick123,

Maltodextrin is usually mixed into post workout drinks, as this is a critical time for trainers as working out depletes energy supplies and creates a catabolic state (muscle wasting) in the body. This is mainly due to the release of cortisol, a catabolic hormone released during intense workouts. Among the key functions of cortisol are the reduction of protein synthesis and the halting of muscle growth.

It is therefore imperative that the release of cortisol is controlled if you are to benefit from your hard workouts. How is this achived you may ask? By prompting the body to release insulin. The easiest way to do this is to consume simple carbohydrates as soon as possible after your workout, during what is termed the “window of opportunity”.

Getting the right nutrition in your post workout drink will help you:

    • Gain or maintain lean mass
    • Recover glycogen stores
    • Increase anabolic hormone levels.

By consuming protein and maltodextrin as soon as possible following a workout, you will maximise the benefits of your hard work.

I hope this general summary (there is much to discuss on this) sheds some light on why you would utilise such a product.

    • thanks mate, and thanks amir for the link.
I probably have a high/adequate level of carbs at night already. Would this make me fat? From amir's link, I think it might. I want to put on about 3-5kg of muscle (currently 70kg, workout approx 4-5 times/week)
      Thanks in advance

  • Table sugar is easily digested too

  • +1

    Hello VBO,

For a post workout shake where there is specific goals in mind, fructose (the sugar in fruit) is too low on the Gycemic Index (GI), it will therefore not be digested as quickly, and does not significantly raise insulin levels sufficiently, a crucial factor in reducing the flow of cortisol. Furthermore, fructose is used by the body to restore liver glycogen, it does not therefore restore muscle glycogen.

Table sugar (sucrose) is a disaccharide consisting of one molecule of fructose and one of glucose, so is half fructose, so again it will not restore muscle glycogen. Therefore consuming products high in standard sugar (sucrose) is not beneficial for a post workout shake.

Maltodextrin is absorbed directly through the gut into the bloodstream, raising blood sugar and insulin levels faster than any other carbohydrate. In addition, because Maltodextrin is already in the form of glucose (the form the body requires), it can be used immediately to replace muscle glycogen.

  • Hi mick123,

This product as discussed already is a different type of carb which
is well suited (due to it's gi rating and how the
body responds during this window of time ) to be combined with protein after a
workout, to assist with recovery and growth. You wouldn't
consume it througout the day like you would with a protein shake, this
    would lead to weight gain.

If your training sessions are intense and you are serious about building
muscle then your post workout shake should have a combination of
a high quality pure protein such as whey protein isolate and maltodextrin.

    Cheers

  • so basically, drink protein shakes throughout the day, and drink this after your daily/weekly/etc workout?, is this a good balance for gaining weight/muscle.

and how long would this last if having 2-3 drinks a week? thanks!

  • Hi JPOWER,

Yes, you have the gist of it. Just make sure the post workout shake combines BOTH. i.e. a high quality pure protein such as whey protein isolate and maltodextrin.

Serving size will obviously vary depending on your muscle mass/body fat percentage and ultimate goals, but the general serving size of 35g will result in 128 servings. So at 2.5 a week (between 2 and 3 as you suggest), it will last a year. $20 bucks well spent in my opinion.

    Cheers

    Leo

    • Hey, are there any serving guides on the packet or website? I wouldn't want to put in too much or too little for myself.

      thanks.

      • Hi JPOWER,

There are serving suggestions on the packet and on the website. A serving scooper is provided to enable you to measure out 1 serving according to the nutritional panel. However if you want to get more exact a more specific serving would be to mix 0.5g - 1g per kilo of body weight (also described on the packet).

        Cheers

        Leo

        • thanks mate.
