Best Value Route to Europe from NYC

Hi all

Bought a great value flight to NYC (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/201430) for our holiday next year. I'd like to spend a week or two in Europe as well, so was looking at different option to get from NYC to Europe and back. Preferred destination in Europe is UK/Ireland but flights I'm looking at (late March early April next year) seem to be about $800-$900 return on Skyscanner etc.

I've seen flights to Stockholm or Oslo for about half that price, is this the cheapest way into Europe? Don't mind jumping on a train to see some sights.

Thanks

  • maybe look at icelandic air to manchester…or london

norwegian air seems a cheap option, be warned norway is ********* expensive

  • norwegian air flies to gatwick for 700 or so

  • Yeah, since Scandinavian airlines seem to be the leading budget transantantic flights (Norwegian, SAS) they appear to be the cheapest. If the Australian dollar wasn't so low some of the fares from New York would have been crazy cheap compared to historical prices.

Oslo is often the cheapest place to fly into these days and has pretty affordable connections to Dublin and London at your time of travel but Oslo is generally unfit for budget travel despite the dropping Norwegian kroner (unless you camp or couchsurf). You'd normally pay more than $37 AUD just to sleep in one of the 3 "budget" Anker hostels (hence why I camped - but in summer), but shared AirBnb can be cheap (just watch out for the too-good-to-be-true fake listings so you're not stranded). It's also "just" Oslo - which is fine if you've seen the sights in Europe before but as a city it's usually not the main draw to Europe. Road-tripping through the natural sites in Norway on the other hand would be amazing but not budget friendly.

Copenhagen might be cheaper now in summer than in April next year since there's more competition (they turn a school gymnasium into a hostel for example) so it might end up more expensive than Oslo (despite food being cheaper). Stockholm might be the most reliably priced in low season.

Saying all that, the Australian dollar is bad now and it may even get worse by April next year so if money was tight you may be better off flying to Eastern Europe :)

Edit: I just noticed "our" holiday- sorry

  • Thanks for your responses! Yeah Norwegian Air seems to be the cheapest option. AU$580 return to Oslo. I've been to all the Scandinavian countries before but my wife hasn't though she is interested in seeing Stockholm. Might be the best shot

  • oslo prices negate any saving :) as u know its a rip off

  • I'd try flying in to Shannon airport in Ireland. It was pretty much made for that particular route, so prices should be cheapest and it gets you straight in to the west of Ireland.

  • Yep, Norwegian is probably going to be the cheapest you'll find going direct from US to London but note you'll need to pay extra for checked bags and food etc. There is also WOW if you do't mind a stop over in Iceland or icelandair usually has a lot of specials(sta.com is a great place for one way fares, even if you're not a student).

But…. Why do you want to? You'd be better off and probably cheaper just purchasing a ticket that is Aus-US-UK-Aus rather than flying return from US to Europe.
