NBN Has Arrived. Please Find Me a Plan

NBN Has Arrived. Please Find Me a Plan. Looking for 100/40 ,no contract ,any price. Currently with Clubtelco Adsl2+ @ very good speed using Netgear DGND3700v2. I am willing to upgrade my equipment if necessary. Thanks in advance.Tel

Edit:currently on unlimited data but using less than 100GB. Better speed means more data usage I assume, correct me if I'm wrong.

  • No contract will mean you pay installation/setup.
    Data cap?

    I have TPG 100/40 Unlimited for $89

    • How? tpg's website states that's $99.95.

      • +1

It used to be $89, so its a grandfathered plan

        • Damn lucky you.

        • +1

Complete noob here but what does "grandfathered" mean exactly I keep seeing but have no idea what it is :/

        • +2

@Jetship: They changed the plan, but the people who already had the original plan keep it..

e.g. TPG raising the price by $10 / month. Or normally Telcos will keep you on an old expensive plan rather than automatically dropping you to a more cost effective one.

        • @airzone:

Ok understood, thanks for that! :)

    • No contract will mean you pay installation/setup.

A standard NBN installation is free. Any installation/setup charges are pocketed by your RSP.

      • You're mistaken.

        • Mate, I can guarantee you I'm not. Have you read any of the NBN Wholesale Broadband Agreement documents?

Take for example a 12/1Mbps AVC service. If the RSP already has purchased CVC bandwidth for other customers within that CSA, the only cost to provision that AVC at the premises is the $24exGST monthly charge. If the NTD was previously installed, a spare UNI-D port will be used. If there is no NTD, nbn™ will send out their technician to connect the premises.

The $24exGST is per month, and the RSP is not locked in to supplying that service.

        • @matt6589:

          You've mistaken what I meant by installation/setup.

The RSP charges a connection/setup administration fee.

        • @Drew22:
The NBN won't charge you an installation fee, however the RSP may charge you a connection fee or setup fee on a no contract plan, but may waive it depending on their policy if you sign up for 6, 12 or 24 months depending on t he RSP. Is this what you meant Drew22?

The government (through our tax dollars), is paying contractors for the installation of the NBN, but the RSP's who are providing services are charged by NBN for the services the RSPs provide to the people. The RSPs then charge us to cover the cost for them providing us with a service. These costs involve the monthly charges and the set-up fees.

  • I'm looking for one too, but prefer a UNI-V bundle. Does TPG's phone go through UNI-V or VoIP?

    • Voip unless alarm/lift etc im pretty sure

    • Mine is uni-v

here's a good place to start

Better speed doesn't necessarily mean more data usage. Technically speaking, you could use the same amount of data each month regardless of how high your connection speed is, if you don't change your habits.

Of course, in real life, your habits probably will change since there's a lot more you can do on a 100/40 connection. So it's reasonable to assume you'll have more data usage, though it looks like a 200GB+ plan would suit you fine if you're the main heavy user.

    • Agreed, I still have ADSL2 and everything I want to download I get regardless of my speeds. If I had a faster connection I wouldn't download more, I would just get it faster. Dont get me wrong Id get NBN if it was in my area, but I dont see it changing my internet usage.

    • TBH, what you said is true but with the world moving towards streaming services. With a faster connection, people are more inclined to get onboard.

    Skymesh is good.

    NBN‑FE12240 plan - 100/40, 240 GB on peak, 12 TB off peak for $89.95.

No setup fees, no contract and you should be able to use your current router.

Skymesh… love their service and customer support. One of their main guy is always active on Whirlpool helping users.

    Another vote for SkyMesh.
The VoIP can be throuh the UNI-V port or your own VoIP ATA/Phone.

    They have unmetered netflix too.

  • Hey nocure, i've been hunting for a good NBN plan myself, and for the data you use and the speed you require, the RSP Belong, who is a subsidiary of Telstra, offers a $45 per month 12/1Mbps plan with 100GB of data, which can be upgraded to 100/40Mbps for an extra $20 per month, making the cost for 100GB of data and 100/40Mbps $65 per month. Or, if you find that you are using more data quickly due to the faster connection, you can upgrade to $55 per month plan with 12/1 speeds and pay the extra $20 per month for the speed boost and get 500GB and 100/40Mbps for $75 per month. These are on 6 month contracts with $1 start up fees.

I would say that having faster internet speeds means that you download the same amount of content significantly faster. So if you have consistent data usage, like looking at the same content every month roughly (e.g weekly episodes of online tv series, daily news and videos), then you wouldn't expect to use more data. However being on the high speed tier of 100Mbps will cause high quality content like 1080p video on youtube, torrent data (depending of peers), Netflix (Ultra HD on the top plan) to be downloaded quicker, resulting in you using more data in the same period of time (if the higher quality options are chosen, which can be altered via preferences on each website). Another thing to consider is that you will also be able to upload content significantly faster. So if you use lots of cloud based services or your current provider doesn't count uploads towards data usage, you may use more data on your plan that way. For example uploading higher quality content to Youtube (1080p video like from a GoPro should be uploaded at ~5Megabytes per second), cloud based back up services like Dropbox etc.

I am with Exetel on the NBN for $39.99 per month on a 12/1Mbps, 100GB plan and have noticed youtube and other video sites automatically set the video quality based on my line speed, so it downloads videos at 1080p. This can be changed in the settings if needed, but it can be overlooked. I also did a line speed test on Exetel at getting 42.83Mbps down and 0.95Mbps up, at 10:10 GMT time which is 8PM in Melbourne. http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4537409078
Also I see my internet speeds on my Mac as I have toolbar which measures outgoing and incoming data, and the numbers shown when downloading videos correspond to the speed figures I get when I do a speed test. I state this to show how your line speed can increase the quality of the content being downloaded due to websites detecting the higher speeds, and thus you increase the amount of data being downloaded, as the content is larger in size.

TLDR: Content such as videos may automatically be upscaled to a higher quality because sites will detect faster speeds and thus will use more data, more quickly due to the higher quality content having larger file sizes, along with faster line speeds.
Belong appears good value at $65 per month for 100GB of data, with speeds of 100/40Mbps and $1 start up costs for a 6 month contract. But the higher data quota plan (500GB) offers better value for money at $75 per month for 500GB of data, with speeds of 100/40Mbps, $1 start up costs and a 6 month contract.

Any questions or criticisms please let me know

    • Thanks..some good info, who is responsible for replacing the wiring within the home.Matt and Drew were talking about installation costs that are covered by NBN Co.
