I got an email from 3 saying they are offering on 12 month contract 500mb for $8/month (normally 250mb/month for $8).
It also includes unlimited skype-to-skype and unlim yahoo/gmail/hotmail.
Is this good value?

3 Mobile's coverage is usually pretty good in the city. However you just cannot avoid dead spots sometimes. One of my friends HAVE to talk on the balcony at her place because that's the only location she can get a 3 signal without roaming. I was on 3 prepaid before, and was happy chatting on the phone with someone else that's also on 3 (to use the free 3-to-3 minutes), only to find out later that I've used up all my credits as I was roaming right inside my home (less than 10km from Sydney CBD).
is voice roaming counted as extra against your cap or is it just data and video calling? I am in an area where only voice and texts are available from 3 and don't plan on using data at all.
After Vodafone acquired 3, I believe that the phones now roam on the Vodafone network in most places.
How good the deal is depends on your coverage.
3 services will auto roam onto the Telstra network if 3 is not available. Any data on the Telstra network will be charged in addition to you monthly commitment.
