    Store name in title.

  • It's a shame that Macbook Air doesn't have Retina screen and no Force Touch trackpad :( BTW, the 6th gen Skylake will be out soon but with AUD so low I'm afraid Apple will set a high price for it…

    • -4

shame it doesn't come with a 2TB SSD drive

      • -8

I am down voting you because I don't find your comment amusing. The Macbook Air at that price tag should have the upgrade of at least the Force Touch trackpad. I'd rather buy Macbook Pro with a much more powerful hardware.

        • -3

lol the force touch trackpad is garbage compared to the button style one

        • @mattlol: It's actually pretty good. Apple sorcery strikes again.

        • +1

@massafiri: The guy's right. Even as an Apple fan, no it does not strike again. Swing and a miss at best.

I'm incredibly apt yet I actually returned my new Macbook, genuinely thinking it was faulty, only to be told that no, that's just how "force touch" works. The physical feedback during use is stupid, the features it brings along with it are buggy, and considering Apple already tried to reinvent the wheel with their damn one button touchpad in the first place, you've gotta wonder why they bothered at all.

I am so sick of having to teach my parents new iterations of Apple mouse.

      • +11

        Solid State Drive drive

        • +1

Let me just enter my PIN number so that I can get some LPG gas.

    • gonna be interesting, though it wouldn't surprise me if they discontinued MacBook Air and just Ran with 'MacBook" 12" model now..(if they haven't done so already)

      • +1

i hate teh new thin 12" macbook, it doesn't even have a proper usb port, they should have just kept the normal 13" mac air and upgraded to retina for an extra 100-150. that way they even have a bigger battery to power the retina display, id happily pay the extra money for retina display.

        • I cannot agree more

        • -1

i hat teh wingers dat cum on ozbargen and complayne abowt everyfing.

          • usb-c is one of the latest usb standards. it supports charging and devices all in the one port. more ports are unncessary once more hubs and cables are released.
          • it's not supposed to be a full featured notebook, hence the reason why it is 12" and as slim as possible
          • it's the ultimate travel laptop for those that can put it down for a few hours while they do something else and let it charge, or don't use their laptop in their sleep.
          • i look forward to buying a 12" macbook with its new and updated keyboard (which one invariably gets used to just as i transitioned from horrendous PC keyboards. ironic how so many PC notebooks copy the apple style now - just go for a browse at officeworks)
          • please explain why its virtually sold out everywhere?
        • +2

          @insular:
Where did you see that it's sold out everywhere? I see plenty of stock everywhere… (my guess it's because with almost the price of a MBP, people would rather get the MBP)

        • +1

@clse945111: at DSE. 'everywhere' on ozbargain, is DSE

  • -1

Good deal, but there should be newer models coming soon. Unless you need one, I would wait, imo!

    • +10

ummm isn't this always the case with all electornics? (new model coming out soon, unless u need one, should wait)

    • That's what they said like a 6 months.. then they brought out a $2200 12" model…

    • +3

Don't forget the new model will be set at high price because of low AUD

      • +2

It depends on the market.. Just because the dollar is weaker doesn't mean all prices go up 20-30% to cover the change in exchange rate since older model was released. If its positioned too expensively in the market its likely to affect sales (Like we are seeing with Apple Watch now). There will be some sort of price increase but how much will probably be les than what people think.

        • +1

They did adjust the price of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus by $150, also their price for the recently release Macbook Pro is very high.

    • +1

What newer model? This MBA is released in March

  • +1

Which one would you recommend, the old version MacBook Pro 13" with the 500GB hard drive or the one with the smaller storage but with SSD hard drive?

    • +9

      SSD all the way baby!!!

    • +8

Because it actually improves the computers performance dramatically.. its worth giving up extra local hard drive space that can be easily compensated with an external hard drive etc.

      • okay great! That's good to know! Thanks Gavman :)

        • +2

If my experience helps with the decision…

SSD makes a massive difference. I've got an old Air at home that would be coming up on 3.5 years old with a 128gb SSD and it is still more than fine for day-to-day stuff. Cold boots in about 20 seconds, wakes from sleep in about 5. It slows right down when you do things like importing large numbers of photos in iphoto (fan spins right up as well), but for browsing, email, music, word processing and stuff it is perfect. I've got an Incipio "skin" on it that has been there from day 1 and you would almost guess it is brand new.

Say what you like about Apple as a company, but the hardware they make is top-notch.

        • +4

The older model Macbook Pro is a joke of a machine, I assume it exists for the sole purpose of drawing criticism away from the other machines. It's not even cut from the same cloth as the other MBP, it's physically larger, heavier, has a inferior screen, battery, hard drive and is overall awful value. The extra $200 for the SSD and 8GB ram will make the machine feel $1000 better, also in my experience SSD don't age nearly as badly as HDD which all tend to die up the arse after a few years of use (functional but slow as a crippled rock).

But do consider spending that extra money for the 256gb model, if you want to even consider dual booting Windows then this should be your only choice, even without that you'd want the extra space unless you are using this laptop purely for web browsing. I've got around 60gb of 256gb free after 2 years of casual use, there are a bunch of photos and programs installed but I don't even keep any movies or music on here. An external HDD is a option, but a cumbersome one, you really don't want to be lugging around something that's going to be 1/5 the size of your laptop and constantly taking up on of your 2 USB slots.

If your budget is tight and you could really use extra space then look elsewhere, the MBP just won't tick those boxes.

        • @NoRotation: From what I understand, the older MacBook Pro only really exists still for the education market - the easily upgraded parts are a huge plus for larger institutions.

        • +2

          @ebosh:

Say what you like about Apple as a company, but the hardware they make is top-notch.

          Intel processors.
          Toshiba/Samsung SSDs.
          Samsung/Micron/Hynix RAM.
          Foxconn Motherboard.
Mac OS X = sexxed-up iterations of Unix.

          You were saying?

        • +1

          @Amar89:
          Motherboard built to Apple's specification
PCI-e SSD which no other laptop is using
          Aluminium unibody
          Glass touchpad
Might be more accurate to say Apple makes devices with good hardware, but that's just semantics, most of these parts are sourced only for Apple and certainly the design and specification belongs only to Apple. So what does it matter who's name is plastered on the front of the Chinese factories that make these things?

        • Thanks for the comment everyone. I'll be planning using it mainly on everyday stuff plus Lightroom and possibly photoshop. I have a part time photography business and I shoot in RAW so will be doing lots of photo importing.

The current macbook I am currently using is the white MB early 2008 model and it's still going. There was a couple of times where the HD made clickign noises and it didn't recognise the HD when I started up but I managed to fix it. However, I am worried it won't last and it's quite slow too… I don't have the money right now but hoping I can get one on interest free… but just need to decide which one to get. I was origianlly thinking of getting the one with 500GB HDD but after seeing all your comments I probably will get the one with SSD.

          Thanks again

        • @inaj8: You could also grab a cheap 128GB/256GB SSD and throw it in the old macbook and retire it to music playing duties. I've got a mac mini from late 2008 that still does a great job as an HTPC (Plex front end streaming from an HP microserver). All it took was a 128GB SSD and 4GB of RAM. It's not going to set any performance records, but it does the job.

        • @ebosh: Oh really? Is it easy to upgrade the RAM and the SSD? What should I look for? I've got only 2GB ram at the moment so it's quite slow..

I'm just thinking whether I should buy a refurb or the one on sale at the moment at JB with the 10% off and maybe interest free…..but it's just so expensive.

        • @inaj8: I can crack open mine and check what the drive model is if you like, but from memory it is just a cheap Kingston (SSD now maybe?) drive and the ram is just the cheapest 2x2gb sodimm that umart had at the time. To be honest, the SSD made such a massive difference, and I only use it for music and movies, that I'm not sure the RAM made a noticeable difference. It cold boots in about 30-35 seconds, and it wakes from sleep in about 5. Plus it is almost silent now that there is no spinning drive.

As for the new unit, I'd get the refurb if it is the same model and cheaper. Anecdotally the refurbs are as good as new, and have just as good warranty

        • @inaj8:
The refurb is out of stock btw.

        • @clse945111: oh what! I didn't see that. thanks for letting me know.

        • @inaj8: Hey, sorry for the late reply. The SSD is a SSD Now. Not sure if the exact model still exists, but I paid about $75 so it would likely be similar to this. The RAM is Kingston as well (2x2GB), but I'm not good with codes so I can't really identify it. They are 1333mhz though, so I imagine that something like this would work

  • +3

Interestingly, I got a Dell XPS 13 with the exact same specs for the same price with the 20% eBay deal + Cashrewards about a month ago.

I think the XPS is much better value and is widely regarded as the best ultra-portable at the moment. The form factor is just incredible - a 13" screen in an 11" body, the resolution is 1900x1080 vs 1440x900 (c'mon Apple!) and the connectivity is far more comprehensive, including two USB3 ports.

Of course, some people will prefer the Mac OS regardless of the specs, but I'm actually finding Windows 8 a pleasure to use on this machine with no need for a touch screen. I also got a 128GB microSD from a recent TA deal for storing media and a cheap short-form SD adapter off eBay.

    • -2

I can tell you the sole reason why one would buy this over the XPS is battery life. There is no windows ultrabook that can compare.

      • Actually the battery life is pretty damn similar to the macbook air. Only a couple hours off which ain't too bad. Check out: http://blog.laptopmag.com/all-day-strong-longest-lasting-not…

        • -2

Sure on paper. No way in reality on a consistent basis. Overseas at the moment and can't check your link. I'll take a look at it tomorrow.

      • +1

Isn't it only if you run Mac OS? Would rather run windows any day.

        • I rarely run windows on here, since I have a windows laptop anyways for tasks I need it for. Mainly use it for uni - web browsing/docs, so really no real reason to run windows, as battery life is my main priority.

      • The difference in battery life is 22 min, according to the Laptop magazine. Both are near the 12 hour mark.

        Grasping at straws much?

        • +1

Test it in real world scenario. Windows laptops will always look great on paper, but put it to the test and you can see the battery life drains. I use both but without a doubt will take my mac with me to uni, at home, windows. I can easily get 1 hour off 10% even if I didn't try, and if I did, easily 1.5/10%

I must agree with you on the point about the screen res on the mac air though.

    • +3

the touchpads on the macbooks are pretty damn good.

    • Haven't everyone had experience of how good Dell looks on paper then how bad when the issue comes up? and believe me, it's not rare issues come up.

      • Had it for a month now, no issues so far (knock on wood!) and the hardware seems top notch. All in all, I'd say that so far my expectations have been exceeded.

Every time I pick it up I can't help having a silly grin on my face. This XPS 13 is truly the supermodel among notebooks.

  • Is there a difference between a standard HD camera and a FaceTime one?

  • -3

    Lol… An i5 for over $1100…

  • +1

I got the 2013 model for $750 last year when the Aussie dollar was riding high.
I love it but I wouldn't pay $1168 for its current equivalent.
I'd rather get the tricked out Lenovo i7 posted recently for $850 or so.

    • +4

but then you wont be cool! .. loll some cafe's wont even let you sit down if you pull out a windows machine.. :P

      • +2

Don't forget to buy your Apple Watch - Edition.

      • +1

They'd let you sit for a while if you have an expensive ultrabook, but no chunky notebooks, you get kicked out straight away.

  • +2

I'd recommend the MacBook Pro 13 Retina, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 2014 model - its available on the refurb store for 1359. Once you use retina, you won't like the Air screen.
I bought the 4GB Air 13", and noticed it slowed down with a few apps open. I've been able to use the 128GB disk space with an external drive without any issues so far.

    • +2

      Agree with Rites..
Although, the speed boost of the Pro isn't noticeably different compared to the Air, but the screen on the Pro - gosh, it's beautiful. You cannot go back to a non-retina.

Also good to note, the Air's battery life is significantly better than the Pro's. You can still comfortably squeeze 9 hours out of the Pro.

  • I bought this from HN during EOFY for $1258 - 50 (AMEX cashback) - 25 (Office365 cashback)

The battery last for long and its so much faster than my old Mac Mini Core i7 (2012)

  • When does this expire?

  • can visit this site (http://apple.ozxin.com/) for price comparison

  • -1

Only 4GB RAM. This thing will swap heaps, wearing out your SSD.

  • +2

bought one 1 year ago. first apple after many years of windows.

what i love about my macbook air:

-you open the lid and the computer is on - no 'resuming windows' bollocks
-battery life. have owned many dell, vaio, toshiba laptops - no competition
-it's fast. i never think about how much ram and cpu speed it has - because i dont care as the thing is fast
-not one single issue in 1 year, touch wood. nothing. if an external hard disk doesnt pop up on desktop within 3-4 seconds - thats it.
-all the time saved updating virus crap, scanning registry etc. waste of time.
    -size and weight
    -bash shell !!!!

only one thing i dont love about my mac
-price, but 1350$ got me with warranty till 2018.

high recommend this as a ultra portable laptop.

  • +1

Picked one up last night. I was about to purchase it the night before at $1298(?) but I was busy, good thing for me! It's a perfect uni machine, lightning fast, long battery life and light. Couldn't be happier, thanks OP!

  • +1

20c Cheaper at OW. Thanks for the Post OP.

  • Dick Smith also have 10% of Apple this weekend so if you can't get to a JB hifi store.
