Free 0.25g (~$12 AUD) in BitGold

1170

Seems to be another online currency - this one tied to the price of gold.

You get up to 0.25 grams of virtual gold on signup - which is about $12 AUD currently.

This might be a good way to get some exposure to gold.

While the deal is still on (and the link still works). They are now playing silly buggers with the amount you get and reclaiming inactive balances (where there has been no deposit). I'm going to mark as expired therefore.

Edit: Some updates

There have been some recent changes to the referral program - the amount received is now linked to the "Golden Heart level" score of the referrer and does not seem to depend on country anymore.

The exact details of these changes are outlined here.

Part 11 of the Bitgold Terms of Service deals with promotional balances, and may be worth a read also.

Things to note:

  • Everyone to date seems to have got their bonus regardless of making a deposit.

  • OzBargain user lolmao successfully withdrew 3g (~$125) to an Australian bank account.

  • If you have not made a deposit and then don't log in in any 60 day period, they will reclaim the bonus. Consider depositing $0.03 USD of bitcoin to get around this.

Other offers:

  • Free Birthday gold. This offer is for a free 0.0XXg gold where XX is your age. You get this automatically on your birthday. This promotion is still running as of Jan 3, 2016.

  • 5% first deposit bonus up to $100. I think you get an email with this offer shortly after joining. Mentioned in this tweet.

What is required in order to withdraw this 0.5g of gold….?

      you need 1g of it.

Dammit…..got caught up in the chance to get free cash money/OZbling that I only just got around to checking the fine print….

Found this point regarding redemptions via credit card and bank wire.

      http://support.bitgold.com/customer/portal/articles/1961174-…

You can only make a redemption to a credit card used previously to make a deposit
You can not redeem an amount exceeding the total deposits made with your credit card

There is a 1% redemption fee and the minimum redemption amount is $20 USD (according to the link below)

      http://support.bitgold.com/customer/portal/articles/1927344-…

BUT, if you managed to encourage/con/fake account/sign up enough people to earn boatloads of gold…. you can redeem it in either 10g cubes or in 1kg .9995 Bullion bars (for $25 USD + any applicable shipping/insurance fees).

      http://support.bitgold.com/customer/portal/articles/1878276-…

      • I suspected that. There was no way they would be giving free money for nothing.

In other words they Match Dollar to Dollar you deposits and allow you to withdraw them. So you could use the Bitgold money to shop and get something at half price i.e. 50% from your credit card and 50% from your bitgold

        • +1

Sorry! Minor correction regarding bank transfers.

The following only applies to credit card redemptions:

You can only make a redemption to a credit card used previously to make a deposit
You can not redeem an amount exceeding the total deposits made with your credit card

You should be able to redeem via wire/bank transfer but the minimum redemption amount is $20 USD + a 1% redemption fee.

I only read the first half of the link before and didn't check it properly. Refer to the link below from the middle part regarding wire/bank transfers….

          http://support.bitgold.com/customer/portal/articles/1961174-…

I apologise for the confusion and will go back to my OzB cave/shrine to beg forgiveness…

        • @Chimpus:

Im pretty sure there will be a condition to withdrawing the free referral money. Worst case senario, you wont be able to withdraw it but can use it to purchase something online

I don't think they are rich enough yet to give away $25 each to thousands of new sign ups.

        • @easternculture:

I know what you mean, I've been trawling through the site to see if I can find any 'catches'.

I not adverse to getting free money, but I've been bitten enough times to be a little more cautious nowadays…

        • +2

@Chimpus: Also it seems you have to log in every once in a while to keep your promotional balance. :P

11.2 Promotional Balances are equal in value and redemption rights to traditional BitGold balances as long the recipient of the Promotional Balance has logged into their BitGold account at least once over a 60 day period. If the recipient has not logged into their account for a period exceeding 60 days, and no external deposits of funds has been made into the account during such period, BitGold may, at BitGold's discretion, reclaim the Promotional Balances to BitGold's own resources as an unclaimed promotion.

        • @adie777:

          Nice catch!

Guess they'll be wondering why a large number of accounts empty out their balances and become inactive in 60 days hehe.

        • @adie777:

Promotional Balances are different to Referral Bonuses

Promotional balances would be a specific link used by Bitgold for a specific time i.e. www.bitgold.com/free$5 or through a promo code via signup i.e. FREE$5

        • @easternculture: I think referral bonuses are deemed Promotional Balances. ToS

11.1 For every referral made by an existing BitGold account holder (using the unique referral link provided by BitGold), a verified BitGold account holder will receive an additional deposit of 0.25 grams of gold into their BitGold Vault. These deposits are promotional balances ("Promotional Balances") and are subject to the terms of this Agreement, including, without limitation, the terms outlined in Sections 7 and this Section 11.

        • +2

          @adie777:

ah ok got it. And this

11.3 BitGold may disqualify you from a promotion and/or claim back Promotional Balances if it believes that your account or subsequent referred accounts have has been set up to abuse the promotion or if you are otherwise in breach of this Agreement or the terms and conditions of the promotion. BitGold reserves the right to suspend, modify or terminate a promotion at any time and without prior notice.

Im guessing that they will be looking into the OP's account depending on the amount of referrals and because they will be able to see the traffic coming from ozbargain

Its been done before by Uber when someone has 50k of credits and they deleted his account. http://www.businessinsider.com.au/blake-jareds-50000-uber-cr…

          Also refer to these

11.4 BitGold reserves the right to validate referred accounts which must meet the terms outlined in Section 3 and may withhold Promotional Balances for up to 60 days.

3.1 You will be required to provide a copy of your current government-issued photo identification with MRZ (Machine Readable Zone) check details visible where applicable and/or such other identifying and verifying information as we determine from time to time in our discretion (the "ID Documentation") prior to opening an account and thereafter at our discretion. BitGold will verify the ID Documentation (a colour reproduction without obstruction of sufficient size, resolution, legibility, and with Latin (English) text), and perform a background check prior to approving your application to open an account. You consent to our contacting credit bureaus to obtain information about you for purposes of confirming your identity under applicable "know-your-client" rules. Please note that different countries have different promotions running at different times, to find out your current promotional amount of bonus gold click on the Golden Heart™ icon once logged in.

They may be using IP information, so for example, those logged into a VPN accessing their site or put in US details. They also might be detecting where the referral signs up from, e.g. looks like UK may get a smaller amount. All just speculation.

What exactly can you use bitgold for?

    • If you have a horse with a sensitive mouth, you can use it to make that little metal part of the bridle that goes in their mouth (the 'bit'), because gold is a very soft metal.

      • +2

Ah interesting, I thought there was something I could do with it!

  • this one tied to the price of gold.

    Huh … why?

Oh wait it's a virtual currency.

Oh wait that's not a good reason :p

It's like investing in gold without any of the nice bits about gold like being able to hold it, trade it for guzzoline when the apocalypse happens and not being able to be hacked.

My take on it is I'll be happier when some people report after 60 days, but there is nothing lost for the moment by having it. An alternative to paypal would be nice, and some insurance against the falling Aussie dollar would be handy if it turns out legit and gains acceptance.

If they don't open up bitcoin withdrawals or launch the prepaid ATM card here (their twitter account indicates they are soon to launch the card https://twitter.com/bitgoldinc ) - withdrawing to an international bank like HSBC or Citibank is an option they offer currently.

Some evidence that bitgold are paying out on their affiliate program - difference is that this program settles every month (rather than 60 days) and pays out 0.75g to the referrer only (which is not a very nice thing to do to your friends).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzstX7h-eg0

Mainly for the screenshots - perhaps ignore the speaker.

From the google hangout (above), the CEO was saying they eat the international transfer charge on withdrawals also, so nothing to stop you from taking it straight away as cash (or get it mailed as gold).

So looks like the real deal so far.

  • I wanted something to practice using my Bitcoin hardware wallet (Ledger Wallet) on before I actually spend any money but I gather this is not suitable for that purpose.

  • I deposited using bitcoin - this was the process. Showed straight away for me.

    http://support.bitgold.com/customer/portal/articles/2089338-…

But yeah, I've never used a hardware wallet so not sure. Could make another bitcoin wallet to transfer the amount you intend on depositing over to then make your final transfer afterward?

  • Got this in the email today:

We want you to experience the power of payments and savings in gold so much so that we are offering you a special 10% top up bonus on your first gold deposit until 11:59pm EST on Sunday August 23rd, 2015, with a maximum bonus of USD100 or 2.5grams of Gold. That’s like getting an up front 10% return on your savings!

anyone else daring to have a crack?

    • If you want to deposit with bitcoin, that might make sense (or you have a low/no fee free visa debit card with good conversion rates - as the ultimate transaction is in a foreign currency) - but bear in mind that bitgold will take 1% of the transaction as a fee (and 1% on the withdrawal side too).

If you plan on getting a 10g gold cube shipped then this may be a good way of getting up to 10g.

Either way you'll probably still come out ahead taking up this offer.

Unfortunately, I have already made my first deposit ($5 USD in bitcoin, which has pretty much held it's value - unlike bitcoin itself, which seems to be undergoing a hard fork atm).

    • Here's another good reason to make a deposit also - 11.2 of their terms of service:

      https://www.bitgold.com/terms-of-service#/

"Promotional Balances are equal in value and redemption rights to traditional BitGold balances as long the recipient of the Promotional Balance has logged into their BitGold account at least once over a 60 day period. If the recipient has not logged into their account for a period exceeding 60 days, and no external deposits of funds has been made into the account during such period, BitGold may, at BitGold's discretion, reclaim the Promotional Balances to BitGold's own resources as an unclaimed promotion."

If possible, I'd deposit at least the absolute smallest amount possible (0.001 gold grams- which is 5c I think) just to make sure the promo balance will apply.
