Cheapest Way to Internet Remotely (1 Night Only)

Hi all,

I'm basically looking for the cheapest way to stream some internet for a single night.

I've got a function on in a couple of weeks at a place with no internet reception, or FOXTEL connection, but want to be able to stream from Foxtel Go.

My ideal solution (I think) is to get a laptop, stream Foxtel Go, then hook it up to the TV/Projector mirroring the screen/audio. However, with no internet, we'd need to use a mobile hotspot or similar.

Looking to stream maybe 3-4 hours of Foxtel Go, and with a laptop and a decent connection (through someones phone as a portable hotspot), it might default to the highest bit rate, so I'm not sure what sort of data usage I might be looking at, or the cheapest way to go about it.

If you have any ideas or alternative solutions, they'd be very welcome.

Edit: I think the best way might just be to use my existing phone data and tether it. I'm with Vaya so it's only $10/GB.

  • I assume you are streaming a live event?

    • Yeah, we've got a place booked for a weekend away, and it's coincided with the opening night of the English Premier League! So the football fans will be watching that in one room, whilst the other can do whatever they like.

The Foxtel Go site says it's not unmetered on Telstra mobile (it is for home, but that's not what I'm after)

The website says it can be up to 1325mb p/hr (I'll assume that MegaBytes, and not megabits), so if I'm looking at 5 hours, I'd be looking at needing 6GB of data (it can be turned off during half time and between matches)

So I guess what I'm after is the best (cheapest) way to get 6GB of data on a SIM card or otherwise?

  • +1

Is Foxtel Go quota free on Telstra?

    • A google suggests this is only on telstra home broadband

  • You are planning weeks ahead to watch foxtel? Maybe just take a book instead?

  • If you want to watch live on Fox Go, you need internet.
If you have no internet, you have no Fox.
Either find a hotspot you can access or it is prepaid mobile data.
There are no other realistic options.

  • Cheapest way is to use someone else's quota ;)

Or just share the hotspot around every now and again, between all attendees you should have enough included data…

Coles have the Vodafone $30 starter pack for $5.

That comes with 1GB, however they have unlimited weekends at the moment which would be ideal.

    • Bingo, we have a winner!

    • Gonna say this again… If there is no internet or Foxtel at the location you are going to why would there be vodafail signal strong enough to stream?

  • Before you buy amaysim or vodafone double and triple check that you will have coverage. Seriously where is this place? because I'd say every single motel or hotel I've stayed in has had foxtel or austar.

I've was away for Grand Final Weekend a few years ago and the motel had set up the conference room with a projector and the game

If the motel or hotel you are staying at doesn't have a bar is there a local pub that you can go to?

I have a feeling if there is no internet that Vaya will have no coverage

  • Voda-net unltd wknd, as tipped earlier. Geared for streaming— on up to 8, strategically placed nights, pm recharge. (Sat, Sun)

(personally use it to replace foxtel,
COP141,300 pesos, free with Optus'junk (phones) as vouchers to April'16)
