Garage Sale Bargains You Have Found

went for a bike ride with one of my kids this morning and stopped by a couple of garage sales.

scored a pair of new levis 522 for $5, pair of brand new kids school shoes for $10 (seen the same shoes "retailing" for $80) and 3 free unopened bottle nail polish.

successful morning -quality time with child, exercise and some bargains.

I've always enjoyed the possibility of scoring something worthwhile at a garage and am occasionally rewarded with some good scores.

made me wonder what sort of bargains other members have scored from Garage Sales? and what your garage sale habits are?

A really old arcade game for $10. It was a 1969 gun game called Super Circus.

  • I used to frequent garage sales when my children were much younger. Great for picking up toys, car seats etc. Also good if you are just getting started in your first home.I have had several garage sales as I don't like to accumulate items for which I no longer have a need.

I think the best I ever did was a broken toaster I got for $1. Looking inside I could see that the nichrome band had broken. I unwound one loop to get some slack and then connected it to the other broken end. It served me for the next 20 years. I haven't been to a sale for years, I need to have one of my own some day. :)

  • Haven't been to a garage sale in forever, but garage sale style markets are the best for picking up bargains provided you don't mind secondhand. I don't mean the markets with the same Chinese import stuff but ones where your average joe are clearing out their clothes, kitchen cupboards and garages. Best score: a brand new $150 boxed high end designer perfume set for $5.

I like getting books from second hand, if you're lucky you'll stumble across someone with the same literature preferences as you. Got the Asimov Foundation series for $1 each.

A white stool that had turned a yellowish cream with age that my daughter wanted. She thought it looked like an elephant. I offered $10 for it. The owner refused to sell unless I also took the matching dressing table and mirror too. It was $8 for the lot.

That was almost 4 years ago. A friend saw it in our shed recently and offered us $400 for the complete set. we gave it to him as a wedding gift.

His wife calls it her "coiffeuse" and her "petit tabouret".

It looked a lot like this one.

I picked up a manual typewriter for $5 (5 weeks worth of pocket money for 8 year old me) and never used it properly until high school. The power went out for 2 days after a storm and I had an assignment due, so I dug out that typewriter. Nowadays I'd probably just drive somewhere where there's power.

  • We now live nearly 20km out of town, so I never get to them.

Bought a PINK sunbeam mixmaster at a garage sale for $15, and sold it for the same price when we were moving interstate. I found out not long afterwards that it was worth about $400 at that time. :/

  • should probably consider selling few items in here http://gspawn.com/ , or such places in oz.
