What are you looking for in a downlight?

Hi guys,

Not sure if this is allowed but I want to just see the ozbargain community's views on what is important in LED downlights.

I've been involved in LED sales for a while now and starting an online based LED business. Crazy - I know. Everything I am listing is stocked in Queensland and ready to ship out same day in 99% of the cases. However there is no physical shop front where you can come see. I'm more than happy to take pictures, discuss specifications etc though.

Obviously price is top factor for a lot of people but there's no point in wasting money on a lamp that's going to blow up a few months later down the track and there's the whole safety issue too.

I'm looking at supplying cost effective/ superior products and if I could get some comments on the following, that would be fantastic. I would love to offer ozbargain exclusive deals too.

  • How much does price affect your decision on downlights/ led lamps?
  • Do you prefer an integrated neat design, or a design where the lamp could easily be replaced?
  • Would you rather buy 3 cheap lamps, or 1 quality lamp?
  • How much do you value transformers/drivers that meet Australian standards?
  • Would you pay a few more $ for a COB design downlight if it meant a less glare-y design?

"*How much do you value transformers/drivers that meet Australian standards?"

Seriously?!? Do you want to end up in jail/ facing a Royal Commision?

    • I'm not sure AS makes a product any safer. For example motorcycle helmets.

If the product met the standard of another first world country (i.e. UK) i'd be happy.

      • As a dirty Pommy import I agree (most AS/NZ standards mirror the UK/EU, with notable exceptions- child car seats, in particular; ISOFIX anyone?). But you can't sell electrics in Oz without complying (sp?) with applicable standards- you will get crucified, and rightly so.

    • Sorry, I probably should have made it more clear that all the products I am offering are rated for Australian use.

I was more referring to the trend I'm seeing of electricians and end users bringing in their own gear from overseas where there is no warranty support/ no legitimate emc or saa etc approvals on them. I'm just baffled by the increasing trend I'm seeing and wondering if customers just don't care.
