What is the best walking shoes for travelling involving lots of walking?

I'm flatfooted. What is your recommendation on men walking shoes? Budget around $200.

  • these are the shoes I find most comfortable and own:
New balance shoes, I own the 574's very nice for walking and very comfortable
Adidas stan smiths, simple yet great shoes, more lightweight than the 574's, In terms of comfort I find them both comfortable, it just depends on your feet.
Adidas tubular runners, sizing is a little larger but great shoes, very lightweight and a natural feel.

My personal preference is Ascis examples here for runner (The $99 is a bargain if you don't mind bright colour) and Merrell examples here for tracks/shopping - This previous link to a walking company may offer you more ideas on walking shoes.
I find Ascis wider on front heel (suitable for my flat foot) and good support on arch. Merrell is good quality, light and has good cushion.

Here is OZB. $200 should buy minimum two pairs of good shoes. One is extravangant.

    • i got some gel kayano 20 from amazon for about $100. best shoes ever.

    • Merrel all the way as per above.

    • Thanks. Looks good. My feet get blisters easily, do you think I need special shoes?

if you get blisters easily then possibly wearing 2 pairs of socks may ease the problem?

a thin pair of silk stocks and then regular socks over them. it reduces the rubbing.

        • Thanks, I will try that. A friend recommends injinji sock, I will try that too.

        • @cheapo999: no problem, try the 2 layer sock thing before you travel to see if it does work for you. it's what I always do when I hike.

  • Try some Merrels - great for walking, hiking and last for years

Whatever you buy make sure they are well broken in before you travel, no matter how comfortable they feel in the shop new shoes are likely to find somewhere to pinch after several hours. Also, if you blister easy, make sure you carry extra bandaids with you. Have fun on your trip.

    • Good tips, thanks!

  • I'd see a podiatrist if you really want the best assessment on shoes and orthotics especially if you have flat feet.

Hi I'm a Physiotherapist and also worked in Footwear at Rebel Sport for 5 years. From my experience its hard to suggest an exact shoe that would be good for your foot type, but if you are flat footed I'm also assuming you may have a broader foot type which Asics, Brooks and New Balance accommodate for really well.

If you do experience foot pain with extended periods of walking I would suggest seeeing a podiatrist first to determine if you need orthtotics (can cost $500-$700 privately or about $150 if you go through a community health centre). Because if you do end up getting orthtotics we'd usually encourage you to get a neutral shoe with limited support otherwise you may overcorrect your foot having the orthotics in them.

    Hope that helps!

    • Thanks for the very good advice. Orthtotics a bit too expensive for me though.

  • Hmm are there any shoes here that DON'T look like joggers?? I've found Airwalk shoes comfortable personally, but I'm hours away from anywhere that stocks them, personally. (Betts sell them)
