Recommendation Gaming Monitor. Budget $550

Had my 24" Asus now for around 5 years and figured it was time to upgrade.
Been looking around and am noticing on ebay a lot of Korean monitors that sound ok but I have no idea if they are. Even some 30" FIRST and Yamasaki brand ones that are within my price range. In fact I am a little out of touch with monitors and the massive amount of information given.
Ideally would be 27" or above and 2560x1600 or above and strict $550 budget. Would be just for gaming as will be keeping the 24" as a second monitor for watching shows or anything else.

Any help from people that know this kind of stuff would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You can check MSY for the Australian availability and pricing.

  • Ah thanks. Looked for a few of these lists but this one did not come up and did not think to check Toms.

Most are 24" but only 2 are 27". One of them is not sold in Australia so you only have 1 option to buy a BenQ.

BenQ XL2720Z $639 at MSY or IJK. Slightly over your budget but you know it's a recommended monitor.

BenQ XL2730Z $799 at MSY or IJK but too expensive.

    • For those prices I'd rather spend it on the Acer Free-sync or G-sync IPS panels.

  • Yeah but unfortunately the budget is very tight. May have to research the Korean monitors a bit more. Some of those 30" seem very nice.

  • Too bad the resolution is 1600p, otherwise you'd have quite a few monitors to choose from

AOC has a 4k monitor within your budget range though.

Otherwise, you can just have a look at the PCCG site (i've found them to have the largest range of PC parts and components), it would work as a starting point.

  • Oh resolution does not have to be 1600p and I thought of 4k. Had a look and saw a few on pccg but also looking at Yamakasi Q270 or 301 Sparta and the Crossover 27. Lots of choices but just need to really research, read tons of reviews etc. Apparently the Yamakasi and Crossover use the same panel as the Apple Thunderbolt screen.

    • Can it be 1440p? There are a lot more within your budget if you can sacrifice 160 vertical pixels.

      • Sure can. As long as it is bigger than 1080p which I have been stuck at for 5 years.

Hmm… seems I was wrong when I said there should be more in your budget… sorry about that.

I did find QNIX 2710, thats roughly $500 on ebay as well.

  • I've had a 27" Yamakasi for 3 or 4 years now, hasn't missed a beat. I went for one of the pixel perfect ones. No regrets so far.

    • Thanks for the feedback. Always good to hear first hand.

I've been using a 27" Crossover for over 2 years and have had no problems at all. I bought the perfect pixel version from green-sum on eBay. Whatever monitor you decide to purchase, just make sure your GPU can handle it.

    • Have a GTX 680. The $550 was either going on a new GPU or a new monitor. Decided on the monitor seeing as the games I play and am waiting on, Fallout 4, are likely going to run fine on my gpu at higher than 1080p. Good to hear re the crossover.

Something to note. The korean monitors are second grade monitors that did not pass the QA process for the top tier firms. So the manufacturers can afford to sell them at a steep discount to the korean firms like Mango, QNIX, etc. Not that there is anything major, these monitors could come with a small defect like dead pixels, bleeding backlight or a small tint of color somewhere. So it is advisable to buy the Pixel Perfect ones, which is basically checked for defects prior to shipping. However, it will cost you extra.

Secondly, some monitors like certain models of the QNIX 4k ones do not really run at QHD. They are basically upscaling the resolution. Some people feel that it could look worse than just 1080p. Try to look around for disclaimers…

  • Just an update. Ended up going with the Crossover 27 Pixel perfect for $415. Good value from all I have read.

    • Don't you forget to come back with a first hand review of that monitor for us!

      • Well I am no monitor expert but it is pretty damn impressive so far. Going from 1080 to 1440 took a little getting used to. Negates the need for Anti Ailiasing in games due to jaggies being near invisible by default. No dead pixels and very little back light bleeding that I can see. Colour and brightness is nice. Guess my only complaint would be bezel is thick around the monitor. Well worth the money.

  • Have a look into Korean monitors I recommend the x star.
