  • Anyone use these?

    • They're ok, get dirty pretty quickly though.

Getting the cheapest, crappiest microfibre cloths off of ebay are much better. These are very unwieldy, don't clean well at all, and don't allow you to get inside the edges of thick rims.

I founds these are nearly impossible to use depending on your frame. You're wasting your money if you buy any.

The cleaning pads are not flat, so they make a lot of contact with the lens in the middle but almost no contact around the edges of the pads, which means you smear oil and dirt instead of wiping it up. They simply can't get close enough to the nose pad arms, and often just push all dirt and grease into this area which makes it even dirtier. You can make them go flat with more pressure, but then you need to apply a LOT of pressure to squeeze it, and some can scratch or break the lens if you apply this much pressure.

I tried a few brands of these and one scratched my lens (I only tested them on an old prescription luckily, as I didn't trust them with my good glasses) and I accidentally broke the arm off one set of sunglasses as I had to apply so much pressure to the pads to make them touch firmly, that my fingers slipped and I knocked the arm off.

You also have to clean both sides of the lens at the same time, so if you get one side perfect, the other side might still be dirty. The two cleaning pads will touch each other when you get near the side of the lens, so dirt and oil can transfer from one pad to the other, so when you move it back you now have TWO dirty lenses instead of one.

These are gimmicks, not fit for purpose. It does sounds like a good idea in theory, and I'm sure somebody could design a perfect one, but this ain't it!

  • Haha what?! I would not want one of these even if it were free.

  • These are cheaper than the cleanwipes from chemistwarehouse.

Why not just use a lens cloth ?

    • +3

Why use a lens cloth when you can buy some cheap Chinese crap that might turn up in the post 6 months later?

Why not just use your shirt? It's free.

useless, not even worth 89 cents

  • I use them and find them to be very effective. The cloths often just smudge the dirt into annoying circles

    • "The cloths often just smudge the dirt into annoying circles"

No offence intended, but you're doing it wrong! People have been using lens-cloths for hundreds of years without issue. You also get a large surface area with a lens cloth, so you can clean off most of the dirt then move to a clean part of the cloth to finish up. You can't do that with these double-sided lens cleaning pads.

Also try using water to help clean off the dirt first, cloths only smudge if there is finger oil or some type of oily gunk on them. A bit of water will help remove some of the residue so you have more effective cleaning. Water sometimes works better than dedicated lens cleaner, depending on how dirty your lenses are.

These appear to be available on eBay for 5 for A$3.29 (approx A$0.66 each) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/5PCS-Lens-Lovely-Microfibre-Fibreā€¦

Can you find a cheaper price that's not buying in bulk?

  • microfibre*

  • I suppose they're useful for those who don't have fingers.
