They might have eBay voucher they don't really value much?

    • Clever.

      • Actually, there is a type of auction, where in theory, the people bid indefinitely, given that they participate in the auction. I cannot remember the details too well, but I think it went something like this. Two or more party play the game of auction. If they have to pay to bid, because they've paid already, the logical solution is to bid continuously until the other players stop bidding or something like that as the loss you make is still less than loss you'd incur when you stop bidding.

Obviously it does not work like that in real life as there are assumptions in the model that prevents it from being completely identical to the real world (for reasons such as simplicity etc etc). Though I think people tend to bid higher in those type of auctions in general.

I probably got details wrong since it's been almost a year since I've touched upon those materials.

Giftcards sometimes sell for more than face value. For example, if the ebay seller will take paypal, but the 'store' won't. I have done this when buying an iTunes giftcard for somebody overseas, because Apple was impossibly painful to deal with directly.

    • This is the only legitimate reason I have ever seen to buy gift cards on eBay and maybe at a slightly higher price.
Still seems a little off for buyer and seller.

  • Proof that there are idiots amongst us
The scary thing is they breed.
