Fitbex Flex Wireless Wristband and iPhone Disaster

Hi, so I thought I had an iPhone 4S but it turns out I have an iPhone 4! I also purchased a Fitbit Flex Wristband which arrived yesterday. Apparently the wristband can only sync with the iPhone models 4S or later. Out of curiosity has anyone been able to make this work? Otherwise, I have faced with returning the wristband or buying a new phone. I have also just signed up to the $30 unlimited Optus plan using my existing phone.

Any ideas welcome :). Thanks!

The official Fitbit spokespersons words are:

None of our trackers are capable of syncing through an iPhone 4 - neither manually or automatically. The Fitbit trackers utilize Bluetooth 4.0 for their wireless communication, and this simply is not compatible with the iPhone 4 and earlier.

You can download the app on such a phone, and use it to view your account data - but you will need to sync that data through another method (either a compatible mobile device or through a computer with the USB Dongle).

    Beaten to the punch.

You basically need a phone with Bluetooth 4.0 support. A lot of newer phones will do 4.0, even the cheap-as-chips Lumia 520.

      Exactly, a very important lesson!

The iPhone 4S was the first to ship out with a chip capable of bluetooth 4.0 (low energy capability) which is crucial for communication to low power devices.

I dont think other wristbands will work either as it is a hardware standard that the phone needs to comply to.

I'm not sure what the Optus subscription has to do with this situation :)

Unfortunately, it sounds like you'll need to get a newer phone.

    Disaster, you say?

It's a Shakespearean tragedy of the peasant iPhone being unable to be paired with its loved noble one (the Fit bit) because of their differences in societal (Bluetooth) class.

It's a sad and heart rending tale of the two devices who were never fated to be compatible.

      • If that was just an excerpt of the next Shakespeare play, I'd watch it.

    • More like a scam. That's an ozbargain forum favourite.

I have a fitbit and an iphone 4s, but I almost never use the sync on my mobile.
Leaving the bluetooth on all day drains the battery more quickly, and it is the only device I use regularly with BT.
I find leaving the dongle in my PC syncs it tolerably often, and that is where I charge it every week or so anyway.
