Best way to get from airport to town is in a taxi. It'll set you back under $30USD
There are buses and shuttles, but they take quite a long time stopping at hotels etc.

If you are renting a car, there are courtesy shuttles to the major car rental agencies (some located at the airport and some just outside).

    Cheap food:
Rainbow Drive in on Kapahulu has great cheap island food (or ono grindz as the locals would say)
    http://rainbowdrivein.com/

Zippy's is another great food place with HUGE portions
    (there are Zippy's everywhere)

L&L Hawaiian BBQ do lunch plates

There are a few great Shrimp Trucks up North from Haleiwa to Kahuku (Garlic or chilli shrimp…)

    Local food to try:
Loco Moco (beef pattie over rice with an egg and gravy - nicer than it sounds)
Lau Lau (pork or fish in taro or ti leaves)
SPAM - trust me - there are some good SPAM dishes on the islands (not as bad as it sounds)

The Bus (thats what its called (TheBus) is the local paid bus system. It's about $2 for a few hours and you can get around the island (slow though)
There is a trolley system in Waikiki going to places like ala Moana (shopping mall)

    Recommend:
Snorkelling at hanouma Bay (places do rentals and drive you there for $10 and you pay a fee to enter the park and swim) - you will likely see a sea turtle (Honu).

Many Luau's…recommend Paradise Cove because it is a little less touristy.

You will have a great time…be on 'island time' and relax.

ALSO there is a HUGE swap meet and market at the Aloha Stadium (it used to be on Sat, Sun and Wednesdays) - well worth a visit (wear a hat and sunscreen because it seems to be located under an ozone hole)

… Loco Moco.. The first time I had it i couldn't believe my eyes.

2 fried eggs served with 1 massive beef patty drown in gravy on top of white rice with the side of creamy pasta salad

      • When I went to Hanauma Bay it was free, only cost was the snorkel/mask rental from a kiosk on the sand. It was a decade ago so guess things have changed. I only saw little fish. Caught TheBus there with all the locals.

I also went down in the Atlantis submarine which is one of those things you don't get to do every day. I only was there for three days, definitely would go back.

  • What the difference between "The Bus" and Trolley?

    • We hired a convertible mustang and drove around the island! Recommend !

      • best, we did this and our friends had a topless jeep

        • We did, as well.
Found an old, cheap V8 'stang, and had a ball!

TheBus is a regular tin-can city bus used by locals most likely with no air-conditioning. It's the cheap way of getting round. The Trolley is touristy and looks like this:

Taxi from the airport to Waikiki. Don't bother with private shuttle bus, etc.

Note that Waikiki is a crowded beach. No need to stay there the whole time.

When I was there (admittedly a decade ago), bus from anywhere to anywhere on the island was always $1 for tourist convenience.

I liked the Polynesian Cultural Centre.

Ditto on the spam, loco moco, etc. Good stuff.

TheBus is the local bus service. The Trolleys are like old style trams cars and are run by other companies. Some charge $1 for a trip to the shops or around the loop (just through Waikiki to Ala Moana and back)

Some hotels offer free trolley on some lines (theres a pink trolley and a red one I think) so maybe ask at the hotel to see if they have something like that set up.

Definitely recommend you hire a car for at least one day and do the circle island…you go up and past the Dole Plantation (there is a huge pineapple maze and good foods) and then to Haleiwa - a great seaside surf town…then across the top of North shore via Kamehameha Hwy and past many beaches…the Polynesian Cultural Centre and Waimea canyon/falls is there…there is a Kualoa ranch and Valley of the Temples…further (via Kalanianaole Hwy) you will see Waimanalo Bay ans Sea Life Park
Also, if you area TV buff, Magnum PI's house is up there too….

  • Try Hawaii 23, Mark is the proprietor. (check out their website) They pick you up at airport drop off at your hotel & the charge is $23 for up to 2 people & luggage.
I've used them several times & they haven't let me down yet.
    Highly recommended.

Make sure you do the cheesecake factory in waikiki, its just a restraurant but the food is amazing and the prices are affordable.

Also if you like burgers go to Islands up top the food court in Ala Moana shopping centre. For most people its probably not all that exciting but I fkn love the burgers there, ive done 3 trips to Hawaii in recent years the first place I go to eat is Islands to get my fix haha.

Honestly if your not sure what to do just ask your hotel, theres heaps. Hire a car and spend one good day driving around the entire island.

I love hawaii, its people, the culture. Sure theres the odd knob like everywhere but on a whole the place is amazing. Aloha

  • Six of us hired a huge 8 seater stretch from ABC limo's with own baron board (our booze), did a 4 hour cruise around beaches with driver commentary, it was excellent, inc. tip was $150.

Had driver drop us of at Hilton Hawaiian Village for a very long lunch, don't remember much after that:)

As mention the Cheesecake restaurant has top food inc steaks, the wife can shop next door at Forever 21 too.
