What is the best Memory for an i7-4790k?

Hi All,

I purchased the Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H and the i7-4790k at the recent 20% off ebay sale. I'm now looking for ram and there seems to be more choice than in flavored milk! I am looking at overclocking and I have the EVGA-GTX 970 and a 750 watt PSU from the same sale.

Does anyone know what the best memory would be and why?
I'm not looking to spend money for a brand but will for genuine features.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

  • I'm pretty sure that RAM is all the same essentially… they're not going to have any additional features that others won't. I think there may be difference in the parts used but I don't think you'll have any issues as long as you buy mid range parts.

Just go for a G.Skill or something, they seem to be decently priced. Corsair is aimed at enthusiasts as it apparently their RAM OCs better then other RAM. Though I don't recommend OC'ing RAM unless you know what you're doing with the timing and what not.

    • Its the OC'ing ability and the timing specs that I think are the concern. Thanks for the reply but I hoping someone can tell me what the best, or at-lest preferred, is with all that. I will probably need to spend several hours Googling it.

      • I thought you meant you were going to OC the CPU… if you're looking to OC the RAM as well then Corsair is a fan favourite…

The Dominator is said to be good for OC'ing, but that's really expensive, the vengeance is cheaper look into those maybe?

  • What is cpu cooler that you have? If you have big cooler like noctua d14/d15 check the clearance (or ram compatibility) you might need low profile ram heatsink like gskill sniper/ares. In my case I have thermalright macho which has little clearance to the motherboard and extends over the ram slots. If you use water cooling then there shouldnt be any problem.
Corsair brand is well regarded but gskill ripjaws series offer good value/performance.
Quick google 'best ram 2015' lead me to tomshardware article and you can do further reading from there.
IMO dont spend too much at overclocking ram since the results might not be too significant. I believe in your system the gpu would be the bottleneck for 2k and up resolutions. Get the best out of ur cpu/gpu first. But of course if you have time then why not ;)

  • You might get a 1% improvement in anything above 1600mhz. I wouldn't bother.

Also remember— High freq. RAM sacrifices latency. So much so that they may cancel each other out.

If you are able to find 1600mhz RAM for cheap, jump on it! No need to worry about going for high speed RAM.

As mentioned above don't waste time overclocking the ram, focus on the CPU for the most benefit.

    • WOW! Its still the same price! I'll look into it. I remember someone telling me to buy Ram from Amazon because it was cheaper but it had slipped from my mind. Thanks. $133.72 delivered AU.

  • I found this for determining the best Ram speed (basically what I was after)…

2: Should I look into RAM like the 2133 with CAS 8-11-11-28 or just stick with 1600 with CAS 8-8-8-24? I guess what I am asking >is if the extra speed will make up for the slower timing?

(Edit) answered by myself with some extensive web search: RAM efficiency can be calculated by the equation (Latency divided by >frequency = response time) which puts the 2133 in this reference just slightly better than the 1600 overall.

and the HX318C10FK2/16 in the https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/202027 link apparently have Programmable CAS Latency: 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6. I assume according to the frequency they are running at, according to the spec here http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/home/13325--kingston-hyperx-….

Max frequency 1866mhz with a cas of 10 and a great price.

Price versus performance that seems like question answered unless anyone else has 5 cents to add?

    Thanks everyone.
