Freshly Picked Juicing Pears 9kg for $10 Delivered @Farmhouse Direct [VIC/NSW]

140

Not the cheapest ever, but a very good price for straight-from-the-grower produce. I reckon it's the same price we might pay for fruit at the big 2 on a good sale day, but this one is not stored for weeks on end.

Free shipping today. Other packages are also available from the GV Fruit Growers page (e.g., pink lady apples, granny smith).

    Please do note:

    • Pears will have some blemishes but are ideal for juicing and cooking.

Not sure I want beaten up pears after all.

      Blemishes doesn't mean bruised though.

I suppose you could grow a pear?

  • If size doesn't matter, small ones here: http://www.farmhousedirect.com.au/gvfruitgrowersapplesforhor…

  • Good price, but what variety are they ?
And does "juicing" mean they are too astringent or bitter to eat fresh out of hand ?

They look like Bartlett pears to me, but not too sure. Afaik juicing fruit just means they are not "commercially acceptable", as is the case when apples are not shiny and red, or shaped oddly (like the odd bunch packs in Woolies). Coles sells juicing apples too. Quality in general is the same as any other fruit, it's just that supermakets adhere to a standard "look" for fruit.

Personally I'll take oddly shaped fresh fruit over a perfect-looking three-week old fruit any day.

Edit: Incidentally, I notice that what fruit growers sell as "equine apples", the supermarkets pass of as kids' snack apples and therefore command a higher price.

      • Thanks, yes I had the thought after posting that juicing just means visual imperfections.
In which case that is fine by me too.
I often buy those at fruit markets and supermarkets when available.
Anyway I also contacted the producer to confirm.

Great idea contacting the producer. I buy these "blemished" fruit to make applesauce and pear puree, or to use in baking pies. i don't see anything wrong with them and I usually eat them fresh too. I wonder at times what farmers do to fruit that doesn't make supermarket-grade. Seems such a waste to me.

Good deal I guess. Just a heads up that drinking fruit juice like this is essentially like drinking a soft drink in that you get a large quantity of sugar and nothing else. Better to eat fruit raw as it has fibre and you feel fuller with 1 pear rather than having a few pears worth of sugar in your system.

It's OK if you mix this in with mainly vegetable juice though.

Got a quick reply from the grower - full marks there.

The variety will be Packham Pears and the juicing will mean the pears may be a little on the ripe side and have blemishes.
The actual flavour is the same.

Little on the ripe side means to me you will probably have do something with them all immediately.

In the past I've ordered both the juicing and 'normal' pears from these guys (were Bartlett variety then). Both were great and there was nothing much wrong with the juicing ones, just little marks to the skin etc. Still perfect for eating without cooking or juicing. Could have been lucky but that's my experience anyway. Putting in big order today :-)

Thanks op. My 6m daughter is just starting on solids so will be great for her puree.

Does anyone know when we are exepcted to receive the order?

  • Have tried to reach someone reg the order since Friday, no callbacks, no information. Been six days since order now, no indication as to where the delivery is, or if it is even dispatched.

    Disappointed.

    • Just received a reply.

“The promotion was very successful and as a result we have a lot of orders to get through. We are currently packing the fruit and hope to get it out this week. You should get the fruit early next week. There will be a tracking number when we send it.”

  • Still waiting on my order to be packed and shipped. They will certainly be ripe now… Probably me being cynical but I wonder if perhaps we have all pre purchased the pears they weren't able to sell commercialy first?

Every other experience with farmhousedirect growers has been great

    • No idea, we'll have to wait and see. Like you, I have ordered many times through FarmhouseDirect and have not been disappointed (yet?).

      • Picked up my order this morning (came yesterday but got carded)
