Withdrawing cash overseas

Hi everybody,
I am heading to the states on Friday (leaving it a bit last minute I know). Will be using my 28 degrees MasterCard to pay for all purchases overseas (as I believe this is the best card to use overseas?). Some small street vendors may only take cash. What is the best way to withdraw cash overseas and avoiding the fees?

  • If you happen to have a Westpac card you'll get fee free withdrawals from Bank of America, still a 2.5% commission though. Citibank plus will also have free withdrawals overseas.

  • +1

ING is also not too bad if you have one and don't have a Citibank

Considering you have left it too late to apply for any new bank accounts, your only option is reading the PDS of the ones you have ?

I think Citibank plus debit card is the preferred cash withdrawal card of OzBargainer's because it is fee free (from Citibank's side, some ATMs may charge a fee).

I haven't used it as last trip I used 28deg (before they changed their t&c for cash withdrawals) but this question has been raised a few times and the answer always seems to be the same - Citibank plus.

  • Yep, Citibank plus.

28degrees used to have fee-free withdrawals on money you loaded onto the card.

    but they've since changed that.

but no big deal if you're not gonna be spending heaps anyway. not worth running around trying to save a few bux.

just get the Citi plus for your next trip

  • Yup, Citibank, and ING for backup, since you should also have this for the rebate. Start planning earlier next trip.

  • You'll need cash to start off. The U.S. is very reliant on tipping. It forms a big part of the income for folks in the service industry, please make sure you carry some cash and tip!

  • Thanks for the help. I'll make sure I apply for Citibank plus for next time. I do have a westpac altitude black credit card and suncorp debit card so will use either of them for cash when required. And good tip about needing cash extra cash because of tipping.
