Is It Worth Cancelling Bargain Flights to NZ?

I purchased a flight with Jetstar from Gold Coast to Wellington for July 20, returning in nine days. Now due to work commitments I can no longer travel. Am I entitled to a refund on the tax component of the flight? I paid around $175 for the return trip.

Being Jetstar you'll have to pay Change Of Name Fees ($50-$80 per person per flight) so at best this'll cost you $100 and possibly $160+. Doesn't leave much left over for you to give to OP.

Jetstar are the kings of inflexibility.

      • thanks for the info, i figured would be bad…

yeh, jetstar changed a darwin flight of mine to time that was so different i couldnt make it… i booked a virgin flight later that dat, but web checked in to my jetstar flight anyway…. the dozen phone calls i had from jetstar was awesome…

        • If Jetstar change the flight time by an inconvenient amount they usually refund you if you ask. I've had to do it heaps of times and they've always offered me a full cash refund, and on certain occasions a $50 flight voucher in addition for the inconvenience.

By checking in I guess you threw away your money.

        • @bonezAU: i argued it for months prior and gave up..sometimes not worth the effort.

Something about being able to claim passenger movement costs or something as well? Rewatch the last episode of The Checkout.

Have you asked work to cover you for your out of pocket expenses? Assuming you have taken the time as annual leave they should be doing that.

Remember if you cancel your flight and receive nothing from Jetstar, it just gives Jetstar the opportunity to collect a further $500 or so from a lastminute booking (birth, death etc). Not showing at the airport limits Jetstar's ability to further profit from you.

    • No, Im a casual fruit picker, so don't get these benefits.

    • They would have already overbooked the flight anyway, knowing some people won't show but if you aren't receiving any refund the definitely don't cancel. You can always pray the the flight is cancelled or substantially delayed so you can then get a refund.

      You should be able to claim the Airport Tax back but Jetstar will charge you $50 per flight for doing so, apparently that's the reasonable fee for doing this;

If there is a charge or tax which Jetstar collects on a per passenger basis to remit to an airport or taxing authority, and we do not have to remit that amount as a result of you not travelling, we will refund that amount to you, after deducting a reasonable administration fee (see Fees and Charges for current fees). If the administration fee reasonably incurred exceeds the amount of the refund, no refund will be paid.

Remember that for this refund of these taxes, you don't need to cancel the flight, just not fly and you are rewarded with nothing extra for actually cancelling the flight with them. Sit and pray it's cancelled so you can get a refund.

      • So it's better to wait and see if the flight is rescheduled, canceled, or delayed?

If there is a $50 fee to claim taxes would it be worthwhile to claim? Any ideas how much the tax component is on a $175 dollar return fare?

        • You should be able to see on your ticket but I think it's around $90 Departure fee, from Melbourne it is anyway. The inbound flight is likely to have less than $50, so try and ask for a refund only on the outbound flight otherwise they may charge you $100 for $110 of tax rather than $50 for $90 if you get my drift…

EDIT: Just saw it's the first flight of the morning as well which means there's probably less chance of it being delayed/cancelled as well unfortunately.
