SYD/MEL/BRIS to LAX $444USD (~$576AU) or NY $605USD (~$786AU) Return w/ Qantas + Europe on Sale

2930

EDIT: Looks like most of the great deals are gone. Though there are still a few around apparently. Keep an eye on the comments.

Crazy cheap price to LA from Sydney or Melbourne (and Brisbane as commented below)

I've plugged in a few dates and seems that there are fares available for most of October and November 2015. Also getting reports for fares this cheap in December and January.

Also, awesome prices to New York, had to work a little harder to find dates for that one.

Adelaide to LA is coming in at about $786AU.

Other reports of fares to London / Paris / San Fran are mentioned in the comments for under $1000.

Try using the search function at http://www.skyscanner.com/ the ability to search the whole month makes it a little easier to find the cheap fares.

UPDATE 2:

2/7 4:40PM:

Hi everyone, just an update following yesterday’s glitch where mistake fares were incorrectly offered for sale by some US based online travel agents.

Apologies for the confusion. The glitch was fixed at 11:30am AEST, however I'm pleased to let you know that Qantas will honour the bookings in this case.

Woo hoo!

UPDATE:

12:58PM:

An update for you savvy AFFers celebrating Xmas in July with these mistake fares: they’re not valid and have been removed from sale. We’re currently following up affected bookings.

Expect bookings to be cancelled shortly.

      I'm never flying Qantas again…..because I can't afford it. :)

There was a good explanation about the situation on AFF:

This all happened because of one thing - time difference - on 01JUL AU time, the new fares took over, and the old fares had an expiry of 30JUN. When the new fares were rolled out, US based OTA were all still correcty publicising the fare levels as they were within the booking date range. The issue then comes when booking, the OTA verified the fare (check) and queried the airline for current taxes (check) - though these taxes were indeed post fuel tax being migrated over to the fare component, and hence way way lower. The way i read it they were always screwed for that 14 hour time difference, and should honor the ticketed fares. (Yes i am a TA, and was aware of the fuel fine migration on 01JUL, but also gave them clearly undue credit for what they should have been on top of - and avoided this sh**storm)

So looks like a pretty complicated situation to figure out.

  • whoever stil has a ticketed booking that hasnt been cancelled you should book a 5 star resort worth a few thousand… they are by law will have to refund you.

So any non-refundable hotels or connecting flights which had reasonably been booked before QF notified they thought the fare might be in error, may be able to be covered.
And it's also been mooted that if someone books a non refundable suite at a swish hotel for a week, it would be cheaper for the airline to allow the flights than to reimburse a few thousand on a hotel.

    • +1

I understand where you're coming from but you're suggesting to spend a few thousand dollars to stay at a flashy hotel to save a few hundred dollars on a flight?

Now what if Qantas don't cancel you're flights?

    • +1

whoever stil has a ticketed booking that hasnt been cancelled you should book a 5 star resort worth a few thousand… they are by law will have to refund you.

How does that help us? If it's cancelled, we get a refund which will probably take a bit of time. If it's not cancelled you are stuck paying for a 5 star accommodation. Seems like a lose-lose situation.

      • which you would of spent on an airfare ticket anyways

      • +1

I think he means scamming Qantas into paying for your accommodation that you can't use.
Then buying a normal priced fare to fly there and use it anyway.

so then you get your accommodation paid for by Qantas. but you have to buy a new ticket.

still not the greatest idea anyway lol

        • i think thats an awesome idea! if that works out

but you have to assume that qantas will cancel the fare

        • @madmouse58: haha I also think he means buy a super expensive hotel that outweights the cost of your airfare.

So if Qantas wants to cancel your fare, and IF they are obligated to reimburse you for accom, they would think twice, because your accom is more expensive than the fare

          Brb booking 5 star accommodation

    • -1

LOl this is stupid idea… why would you book a 5 star hotel worth a few thousand?

you're basically paying for a hotel that you wouldn't normally stay in wtf

even if u were to stay in it, why would u book it now… wouldn't u rather just book it later and not have to go through a refund process

  • +1

I booked in through Expedia on these fairs. Hopefully they honor it. I just realized that it is during the Easter period.. SO more likely that my tickets will be cancelled.. :(

    • I booked at Easter too, but check the cost of your flights now, mine were $1000 each return. so nothing crazy

      • yeah 1002 from expedia

        • +1

Europe ones are now more than double what people paid.

"Orbitz is sending me emails saying "Ready for your trip to LA?". "…. interesting

  • It's interesting to note sale fares on Qantas today that I didn't notice yesterday have SYD to JFK return fares for is $1,325 AUD, not a huge saving over the USD conversion back into AUD of around $818. Seems to be around the same differential for LAX flights as well. So Revenue loss (not the actual cost for Qantas) on US routes is maybe around $500 AUD a ticket x the number of the tickets booked. What the true loss is to Qantas in honouring the tickets is I do not know. I would say not all aircraft would fly full for dates the tickets were booked anyway and I am sure Qantas can play around with the revenue yield setting on the affected flights pushing up prices in other classes to offset lost revenue opportunities if these tickets are not cancelled. I suppose that is all being worked out whilst the wait is on.

    • yeh you're right. as I said yesterday, the tickets aren't THAT cheap…

we already know airfares to US are going cheap atm with most airlines

    • Your point maybe valid for flights due to depart soon, but for flights later in the year, they could sell all the seats and more at the cheaper fares and still make more. In my case I wont be flying until March next year.

    THEY HAVE BEEN HONOURED

    COWABUNGA!!!!

  • by the way, do we get qff points and status etc for O class?

    • Yes O class is discount economy, if you check the Points Calculator you can work out how many points/status credits you should earn

      https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/do/dyns/initialPointsEarned

      • Queue laughter. Poor QFF. Still O is better on QFF than AA for earn (not for burn)… one of the rare times.

  • +1

Glad it got honoured, I'll return the favour by flying Qantas in the future…

…. Only if they have deals like this again =p

  • +1

You know what guys, maybe Qantas had already decided on the spot yesterday that they were gonna honour it, but they probably chose to drag it out to generate media interest and bang, good news for us and their public image..

  • I'm gonna try the Qantas site tomorrow to see how much the new fares are to lax / nyc and back lol

    • See my post a few above for an example of this. I'm booked Jan 2016 school holidays and new sale fares today price about $500 higher for the same period to LAX and NYC.

  • -2

The vibe I get from the news.com.au article is that they are cancelling bookings without actually announcing publicly that they are cancelling. Should be interesting to see what happens now. They won't want to honour this, no way.

    • +2

      It's been honored!

      • +1

        Apparently.

        • I was responding to the post from sparkles

      • +1

will be interesting to what this space in the next few days

    • -1

Hope for everyone who booked that it is honored but this is what the article said:

As to whether the sold flights would be honoured, Qantas told news.com.au:
“We are contacting affected customers impacted by the glitch.”

It's pretty vague and the article was posted tonight. Why would they need to contact you if it was honoured? The info out there is contradictory, that's all.

      • Get your news from forums, not articles. Sheesh!

        • -1

Hahaha, the touchiness that happens on this amazingly reliable "forum" when someone simply questions the information that's out there. It's like addicts in denial.

        • @sparkles: I think they are saying, read the posts above. Based on the Qantas rep "RedRoo" at the AFF forum, who has said Qantas will honour these fares. (made at 4:30 this afternoon). Whereas the papers have been getting their info from many websites that are not up to date on this latest comment.

Now there is slim chance RedRoo is wrong, but its looking a lot better

  • Very Happy.

Okay where do we get cheap disney tickets ? lol

    • +1

No such thing, although make sure you make use of the fast pass

  • +3

See ya all @ Disney Land over Easter Next year :)

  • Anyone know a cheap place to stay in NYC? Doesn't have to be in the city, just the surroundings closeby - I don't mind a 10-15minute train ride if I have to. Just has to be cheapish (good value for money) and be safe! Don't wanna get mugged at night haha

    • Long island city. 5 minutes by subway. Airbnb and Wimdu have worked well for me.

      • dont be soft. nyc isnt just manhattan u know

        • Long island city is Queens not Manhattan. Good places to eat and certainly worth going to see the Mets play but Manhattan is where all the tourist stuff is.

        • @neil: was tellin the dude not u neily

        • @edwinlin88:

Ah OK. You replied to my comment not his.

      Brooklyn.

Park Slope is gorgeous. Gowanus is cheap, just stay near the R/F/G trains.

Williamsburg is where the hype is, and it's expensive as well. The L train is a good train into Manhattan.

      Green point ain't bad.

So much more to say if you need!

      • Park Slope sounds interesting thanx for the tip

    • Yes Long Island City is good. We stayed at the Home2Suites LIC late last year I would highly recommend it if you can get a decent price. New hotel, spacious rooms, nice brekky included. The area was quiet and safe we walked around day & very late at night no problems. 2 minute walk to the subway station. Not much of interest near the hotel but you can easily take the subway down two stops to Astoria for supermarket, restaurants etc. I think it was about 15 minutes by subway to Times Square. We would stay there again but word has gotten out on TripAdvisor this is a good alternative to Manhattan and it looks like the price has gone up quite a bit since we were there. There were several other reasonably priced hotels in that area so definitely worth having a look.

    • Thanks for the replies gentlemen, I'll definitely look into those areas.

Actually come think of it, I'll use my aussie accent to get free accommodation from women, bargain! ;)

  • -4

Remember what happened with people who booked business class to Europe for economy class ? All tickets cancelled and refunded unless you add the difference as the price was a mistake. But who knows with Qantas. Unless you have relatives or friends in USA where you can stay for free, better not risking paying for the hotel now. Probably wait for another week or two.

  • I was just told by Flight Centre, who rang Qantas, that they are only honouring tickets bought through US websites. Was anyone able to book a fare through an Australian website and get confirmation? Any help would be appreciated?

    • ?? What are you trying to know?
      Did you buy a ticket?

You wouldn't have bought a fare through an Australian website

      • +1

byojet.com.au had MEL to LAX for $630 return.

        • +1

          ah fair enough.
So why did you call Flight Centre?

        • @edwinlin88:
I am having a fight with Flight Centre because they are supposed to match any airfares. On the day I called them gave them screen shots & they went to head office who rang Qantas. Qantas said they would not be honouring any flights so don't bother booking. Now, I've found out they are honouring flights. Flight Centre said that Qantas said they are only honouring flights booked from overseas sites and not OZ sites. Flight Centre have now said that if I have proof that someone booked through an Australian site they will match the price.
Hindsight is 20/20 & I'm kicking myself I didn't book on the day.

        • +1

@garmel: hmmm does check Flight Centre policies. Do they only match Oz sites?

          but yeh.. good luck

        • @garmel: Sorry to say that The Flight Centre guarantee is also pretty much worthless. I think "The Checkout" did something about it. Plenty of horror stories out there. With deals like this, book NOW, act later. Never dawdle.

  • I was quick to swoop on this almighty deal through flightnetwork. Melb- LAX $680au Nov-Dec. I was sent an email from flight network confirmnig payment ect, however 1 hour later flight network cancelled my tickets. I was never sent a Qantas ref number, but do have a flightnetwork ref number outlining my intinary and payment made… Do I have a leg to stand on here with Qantas? I called Qantas and they said I require a Qantas ref number for them to honour the flights. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    • +1

Legless I believe. You have your refund?

    • I'm in a similar situation went thru skyscanner (byojet).

I'm talking to one of reps atm, I don't understand how you can honour some yet not others. If everyone was declined then I have no issue but Qantas selectively honouring flights that's not on!

Anyways I'll wait to see what the rep says next week. Might be worth finding a few others in the same situation and concentrating our efforts.

      • simular price, just $50-$150 more depending on destination just book again: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/201430

      • Travel agents can put HOLDS on flights… when they'll do this it'll appear on the airline and look like it's all paid up. You can choose seats, etc etc. But they are not truly confirmed and yours until payment is made and it's ticketed (with an e-ticket number).

Flight Network, BYO Jet, etc. are glorified secretaries - it looks to me that they put a hold on the flight, and only then check if they can still get it at the price they THINK it should be (based on the last time they looked it up). If they can't still get the price, they cancel the hold. If they can, they confirm the ticket and it gets released to you. By comparison, majors like Expedia book & confirm the ticket on the spot (or very soon after - all automated) since they do a real-time check that the price is still correct at time of booking.

        • Correct.

If it was done in real time you would have had a ticket. As Flight Network etc are delayed bookings then then those who made a booking towards the end of the deal, would have been in same situation as those who found by the time they were to pay the price had gone up.

Frankly there is nothing that can be done. The door was shut before your booking got confirmed. The pits but that's the way the cookie crumbled.

  • I'm same as carling and Hal and many more. went thru flightnetwork and paid then they cancelled the ticket. but had Emirates bookings and when chked with them they informed that the ticket was put in and then later taken out by flightnetwork. now trying to get refund from flightnetwork hopefully - will post update if successful?

  • I just got a cancellation email from Kayak/Vayama.com:

    Dear Sir / Madam,

Cancellation Confirmation for Trip ID: xxxxx

We recently received your online booking request. Unfortunately, the airline was unable to accept the fare that was offered earlier, therefore, your booking could not be processed and has been cancelled . Per our terms and conditions on your Booking Confirmation, air fares and reservations are not guaranteed until tickets are issued.

    ?

We trust to have informed you sufficiently and that our answer meets your expectations.
In case of any additional questions feel free to contact us again.

    Kind regards,

    Vayama.com

Pretty irritated that they decided to cancel the booking 2.5 days later especially as Qantas confirmed they would be accepting the price glitch. Not sure I have a leg to stand on though.

    • +1

That sucks neil. Did you not receive a Qantas confirmation code in all that time? If you did, introduce yourself to the Red Roo

      • Hang on, didn't you pay extra to select seats, with a confirmation from Qantas?

        • Yes, they sent a separate email saying I'd have to chase up Qantas for that. Since it was a hold and not a booking I don't think there is much I can do. Both a hold and a booking get the Qantas number but only the booking gets the eticket number.

          Live and learn I guess.

    • Check the Australian Frequent Flyer forum. I believe some that had their flights cancelled were re-booked and honored.

  • So have you guys actually had your credit card charged?

I paid via the Citibank Platinum card and it has been charged (deducted from the amount I can spend) but I can't see it in the transaction list. I paid via Orbitz.

    • yes, went through expedia and charged my amex. coming up on the statement

    • On my 28 degrees I see this

QANTAS AI LOS ANGELES CA -$1,182.79

      • guessing you went through priceline or expedia?

assuming that was for 2 ret tickets, good buy! :)

        • Priceline and yes for 2 in AUD

    • Great, it's showing up on my citibank statement now! :D

01/07/2015 *QANTAS AIR LOS ANGELES US USD 615.90 AUD 847.53

Not sure why it's saying Los Angeles, because I booked for NYC lol

      • +2

QANTAS US accounts/bank are based in LA its nothing to do with your travel itinerary. ✈️
