Hi Every one,
I have to fly to Gladstone every week for the next 6 months and need a car for work from Monday morning to Friday afternoon, I'll appreciate if you guys helping me to make a decision: Do i need to hire a car or buying a small second hand car.
Thanks for advice in advance.

I'd say buy a second hand, and then sell it for $2000 less 6 months later.
Hiring a car for 6 months will definitely cost you more than $2000.

This assumes you buy a reliable car that doesn't break down, and can be bothered with the effort to re-sell.
I'd say buy something that is less than 2 years old, low kms and around the $10-$13k mark.

Otherwise hiring is easier but more expensive.

But also, if you buy a car, how are you going to store it when you're not there?
hiring I assume you can pickup at airport?

    • Factoring in rego and insurance and possibly servicing into that cost?

For the OP, do you have any work travel allowance? Can you get a car under novated lease from work? or have an ABN and claim some of costs of leasing or buying against your tax.

He won't need to service a reliable car in 6 months.

Rego/third party, yes part of the cost of buying a car.

In regards to comprehensive/accident cover insurance, he would have to factor that in with a rental car too.

    • Thanks edwinlin88 and Juvi, I'll have a unit over there but as you mentioned I've to leave it on my place and get the taxi to airport which will be another cost.
I'll be a contractor so there is no travel allowance, also as a PAYG employee can't get that back from Tax.

      • Would it be cheaper to park the car at the airport?

Melbourne airport gives good rates if you book online 24 hours in advance, maybe that airport does similar?

  • I just find out AUS post has an insurance for traveller and hired car. Is any body used that before?

      you don't need travel insurance.

You just need third party insurance for a car you buy. It's relatively cheap.

      • This is insurance if I need to hire a car(quote for $56.00 or $156.00 for annual full cover), instead of getting insurance for $31.00 extra per day from car rental company

to be honest I don't know what you're talking about.

just buy a car. it's definitely cheaper.

you need to learn the process of buying & selling a car though.

        • I think you will find the terms and conditioners will be for people on a holiday, not those who are fly in / fly out.

          Don't risk it.

        • @Daabido: just talk to the customer service and they mentioned as long as each trip is not more than 30 days this will cover it.
@edwinlin88: I agree , but need to collect these info and prove it to my wife.

        • @mb5802002: Sounds good, but get them to show you where in the policy that is written down.

        • @mb5802002: If you get a quote thru here the terms say trips no longer than 15 days http://auspost.com.au/travel-insurance.html and my quote is $48 for 1 trip or $56 for one year of trips (55yr old Australian resident driver)

If buying, can you recover some of your expenditure by Renting out the car via:
http://www.drivemycar.com.au/ on Friday PM on through to Monday AM?

This is a good idea, Thanks "holdenmg"

  • Catch up with other contractors up there. I know of a guy who drives from Gold Coast every other week. My wife flies up weekly, but is thinking of getting me to drive her car up to she can get around during the week. There's a whole community of folk in a similar situation. Maybe you can work something out between you??
