Smile.com.au - Anyone Used It before?

I have been looking to update my private health cover for my wife and I, and i noticed this mob called Smile.com.au

My wife is needing her wisdom teeth out sometime this/next year, so i thought this could be a good way to avoid the additional cost that the provider won't cover (the cover i'm looking at should cover about $600 for major dental).

However, i'm struggling to understand the deal. It seems they will pay 15-40% of the cost of the procedure. That is frankly a bit vague for me, and I can't find any info on how much would actually be covered.

Cost is only $100/year so it could be worth it for a year, but not sure yet

Anyone ahve any experience with them? Good or bad

Smile currently has a Promo Code of FLIPIT2
    Use before 30 June, 2015. :+)
    $77 for 2yr Single.
    $87 for 2yr Couple.
    $97 for 2yr Family.

That said, Smile.com.au is a Discounted Dental Scheme allowing you to see Smile Member Dentists at special rates. See http://www.smile.com.au/dentist-dentists for a Smile Dentist near you…

Smile don't pay 15-40% of anything, all that happens is you join, get a temporary membership card (then a Permanent Card) and you pay the Dentist at the Discounted Rate for the Services they provide.

I joined and was quite happy with the Discounted Rate I got from the Dentist I selected from their list.

    • Have you tried to compare with non-smile dentists?

    • Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight that makes sense now. So they are just claiming to offer it cheaper than other places!

Which does therefore raise the question of how much does it normally cost, so we'd need to compare (indeed leiiv), although the prices do look fairly reasonable. I had a bunch of dental work when I was a kid so i have a vague inkling of how much it costs. Probably i should just ask my mother who had her wisdom teeth out a few years back

See I thought it was working like your health insurance in that you received a cashback after the fact

    • Also, if you use CF22015 and CashRewards, you get 2nd year for free, and 16% cashback. FYI

Thats actually how i came across them

      • has Smile worked out for you? do you have a current Code?

I've also joined and am quite happy. I was looking to change dentists, and am happy with the service and the rates at the one I now go to, I had been comparing a few around my area as I needed several root canals.

My dentist has a laminated folder of prices for smile members, and pulls it and consults it when billing. (She is a bit of a control freak and does the billing herself, doesn't let her receptionist handle it - luckily her obsessive nature seems to translate into perfect looking fillings as well)

They have a list of prices for all procedures broken down by items on their website. That is the price you pay.
    http://www.smile.com.au/dental-fees/nsw

I imagine you could then use the receipts to then claim from your private health care, but I don't have ph so haven't tried.

There are probably dentists out there that will do work at this price that are not in the smile network, if you looked hard enough. Basically I think for the dentist it is a way to save on advertising costs, and for the patient a way to locate some reasonably priced dentists.

If you have to get a lot of work done, you could try ringing around a lot of dentists, one might be wanting for business and give a discount.

    • Looking at the price list u gave, the regular costs seems a bit inflated for comparison. I don't know anywhere that charges $60 for the fluoride. Most places seems to be $25-$35, same as the member costs.

      • Yeah somewhat agree about their prices but some dentists are a bit rich.
One charged me $45 last year for fluoride which I thought was excessive.
The secret is go to a dentist in a lower socio economic area.

        • $45??? Wow, that is day light robbery for 20ml of a commodity product wiped on ur teeth.

With this "Government" you won't have to go to a lower socio economic area, it will come to you. lol

    • Thanks toniyellow. I could not for the life of me find a fee schedule (which they claimed was there, but I couldn't find it)

In retrospect i should have simply googled it…

Now to find out how much a normal dentist costs

I am a smile member and I believe the average saving is probably somewhere around the 20% mark, with the two year price for 1 you can't really go wrong.

  • I also use it and am happy with the dentists. All the prices are listed so you can plan around them. I also think the prices might be inflated a little, before discount but i am happy with them.

  • Do we have any new reviews?

My wisdom teeth need extracting… all 4 of them. Dentist is suggesting $500 per tooth.

  • So is anyone still using Smile.com.au?

  • I signed up today for the $87 for 1 year for couples. Went to the dentist (smile.com.au affiliated) 30 minutes later. The dentist showed me the cost for my treatment, which was $390. I then mentioned I was with Smile.com.au, and she re-calculated (there was a drop-down option on the computer for Smile) and it came to $330 - so just over 15% discount.
