Random question - Has anyone ever done a heavy metal study on the locally farmed salmon? I know some of the imports out of Poland/SE Asia have high counts, would be keen to see OZ stock levels.

    • +4

I wonder where would the salmon get the heavy metal content from? Diet? Or antibiotics? I know imported salmon, like u said, in some countries. With lax laws, has almost no restrictions on drugging up the fish so they survive and get fatter quicker. But I'm pretty sure we have more regulation in australia, and a cleaner environment relative to peers.

      • +1

Heavy metals in the food chain come mostly from coal fired power stations. Goes into the air and rains down into the oceans and farms.
In addition to that the some rivers may contain heavy metals from industry waste.
So unless the Salmon live in the sea near the mouth of a particularly dirty river it's not likely to be much different from anywhere else.

A very quick google search http://epa.tas.gov.au/epa/pcbs-in-tasmanian-water-catchments. Unless youre chowing down on fish guts (mainly the liver) you'll be a-ok.

      • I know this is going to ruin your evil man destroying the earth fairytale but mercury in fish occurs naturally.

The levels that it occurs at pose no harm to people who subsist on fish every single day of their lives.

Worrying about it is probably causing you more harmful health effects than if you were to consume it.

        • I have no evil man fairytale lol, I consume lots of fish, must be my Asian diet, just wondering about stefe comment, that's all.
I'd happy eat up on my salmon, and I know the benefits of omega 3 would easily outweighs any negative. Salmon is great :)

    Australian Tasmanian Atlantic Salmon

The Atlantic is nowhere near Tasmania last time I looked… Is it due to global warming?

  • +1

Can someone explain to me how a fish can be both Atlantic and Tasmanian?

    • +2

Im thinking probably mother and father were Atlantic which were bought to Tasmania and bred here to produce Tasmanian Salmon.

      • +11

On second thoughts since its Tasmania it could very well be Brother and sister instead.

        • +2

          and have two heads.

    • +1

Marketing. The word Atlantic probably brings to mind great rolling waves and huge bountiful schools of healthy wild fish. Which is different to a cage in the ocean that has crap added to it everyday for the fishies.

      • The Atlantic Salmon is the species of fish being farmed in Tasmania. Atlantic Salmon is an important commercial species because they are relatively easy to farm and have a high market value. Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning commercial fishery but the naming is spot on.

Got the last ones at my local store.
    Thanks OP

the attendant was saying that it all disappeared in the last hour

  • All gone Victoria St Abbotsford

  • is this deal today only?

I was lining up at St Georges Tce Store in Perth to buy, but the guy infront of me bought the last 2 pieces and the guy serving said they weren't bringing more out.
Murray street store still had stock, I bought 4 pieces, there were at least 6 pieces left.

  • They were still $29 a kilo when I went to my woolworths southland / VIC 2hrs ago.. ohwell

  • Still $29 a kilo at Fountain Gate (VIC) too :(

  • Can this be used for sashimi? Or is that a diff cut of salmon?

    • -1

You can, but try gauge the freshness of the salmon first. If it's okay, sharp blade and get slicing. :)

    • +1

I wouldn't if I were you. Sashimi needs to be freshly fillet'ed from the fish and straight onto the table.

  • Awesome! I'll have to give it a go if I can find some at my local

  • sold out online when I tried to get it.
