As the title says, I'm after a laptop sporting an i5 CPU, 8GB ram and an SSD HDD. Weight and size are not really an issue, standard is fine. I expect to get at least 3 years use from it so I don't want anything that has dubious reliability. Price wise I'm thinking around the 1k mark if possible but whatever is best value. Any tips?
Laptop, i5, 8GB, SSD, reliable

Inspiron doesn't quite meet the test for reliability. Try the Latitudes instead.

I'd go with the DFO-3200225LT (As New condition) Latitude 14 7000 or DFO-3151039LM (Refurbed)
I've gone through a few of these "ultrabook" class laptops including yoga 2 pro, dell xps 13, thinkpad yoga etc. I've ended up with the Lenovo x1 carbon which I am very happy with.
If you can afford the premium it'll definitely last you 3 years. (btw edu store knocks the price down dramatically if you have it available).
The Lenovo E550 is a solidly built laptop on the lower end of the price scale. One of those will easily fit in your budget:

Whatever. 15 inch is fine but I'm not fussed
