  • They are both low-medium specifications. A rough pricing guide I give to my friends and family is as below:
    - ~<$1000 low spec (typically $600 give or take)
    - ~$1000-$2000 medium spec (typically $1300-$1400)
    - >$2000 high spec

Medium and high spec are needed for games, graphic intensive programs or complex IT applications (development, virtualization)
Everything else should be fine on a lower spec machine.

    • What is the best computer under $900 that you can get?

      • What do you need it for? Office work? Studies? Gaming? Other?

      • I suggest HP or Asus.

  • +1

HP make stuff that does not last, have been wrecking and repairing Laptops since 1999 and more often that not a HP comes in and it's parts only, motherboards die young!

    • The laptop I had before the one I have now (which is Toshiba) was HP and it needed to be sent in for repair twice under warranty, and then it did not last long anyway.
On the positive side, they honoured the warranty both times without any problem.

  • NO

    • What,s the best brand other than Apple then?

      • I personally like and recommend Toshiba.

        • Over time I have supplied many 1000's of PC's, Servers, notebooks and printers to business from sme to enterprise & govt.
In that time I have worked with Acer, Compaq, DEC, HP, IBM & Toshiba.
They all have consumer grade products that are built to a price/feature formula so that they sell at retail.
They also have business quality products that are built & tested for reliability, compatibility and durability. You'll pay a fair bit more, but you will have less issues with them too and they'll last much longer.
Any brand can have a bad batch, components - hard drives/memory/chipsets/network etc all come from other manufacturers and so are sometimes outside the brands control. To say a brand is all bad because of some isolated incidents is not doing justice to them or anyone considering their products.

  • Yes, I recommend HP brand .
Myself I had 3 & never had problem with it.
About the price you should shop around before buy one.

  • There's a Dell Latitude 12 7000 ultrabook going for $819 at the Dell Outlet (i5, 8gb RAM, 128gb SSD). Is a refurbished model; but will run laps around the HP and many other laptops in regards to overall build quality; is a business grade laptop rather than the run off the mill consumer laptops.

  • Hmmm, I personally recommend a business grade laptop. I had 2 laptops from HP (actually one was from Compaq era) and a LG laptop (and a Surface Pro as well I suppose, which I am using currently). Barring the business laptop, when I changed my laptop, it was because it broke down in one way or another (whereas the business laptop was still running fine). So I personally recommend business laptops, since they do last from what I've seen and from what I've heard.

Dell and Lenovo have outlets, though I frankly have never seen a decent ThinkPad deal from Lenovo Outlet.

  • If you can't afford a brand new business laptop, buy a 2nd hand or a refurbished one from an Outlet. e.g Dell Outlet.

  • Yes it is a good one. Good configuration.
