Can anyone recommend a mobile phone from $250 to $350? Can go higher if the value is right. Has to be unlocked and rootable. Been on my iphone4 all these years, it's not possible to jailbreak the latest iOS anymore and I'm sick of these digital handcuffs.
Looking for something with reasonable specs, for some gaming, and a scratch-resistant screen(!). Battery life or weight or camera I don't care for.
Larger screens preferred (5"+). Prefer not to go Chinese brand.

Wait for the new nexus or grab flagships from 2013? LG G2, Galaxy s4 (with Snapdragon 800) etc etc. They all should be reasonably close to your price range (especially with the possible 20% off eBay deal coming up). For the scratch resistant screen, most flagships had the gorilla glass which is scratch resistant, but if I were you, I'd get a screen protector and change them when they are badly scratched (cheap from eBay, aliexpress, etc).
LG G2 is a baller phone that won't break your bank… however I'd advise you to get the international D802 model as you will have an easier time finding community support for it.
It's only $245 via eBay.
I also recommend getting a 32GB version. (I'd buy from a more reputable seller, the link is just an example).
16GB = 10 gigs of usable space which is easily used up if you listen to locally stored music and take photos.
Also worth looking at the G3, now it's dropped in price with the release of the G4. Prices would need to drift down to hit the $350 target, but it's not unlikely that that will happen.

Currently priced $359. Likely to go up a bit as Kogan currently has 10% off on everything on ebay. But even if it goes up to $399, it would still be pretty cheap at $312 with 20% off and 2% cash rewards
or you could just buy it off DWI for $349 anyday. But I believe Kogan sells Taiwan version which means that you won't struggle to get 4g reception as opposed to the HK version sold by DWI
