Broken Camera Lens on 1 Month Old Phone

Well. My son got a new phone. It is a Samsung Galaxy S6. Has been babying it for a month. He has just found that the camera lens has broken. He has no idea how it happened. He has looked after his phone. What to do.

Does he have any hope of getting it replaced?

UPDATE: No help with having it replaced by the service provider. My son took it to Samsung to get fixed. I collected it for him today. Well, the phone has come back worse than what it was. It cost over $200 to fix and it no longer charges properly and there was a lump of dust on the screen. After trying to wipe it off, my son noticed that it was on the inside of screen. When he shook the phone, the dust disappeared somewhere inside the phone. They should be ashamed, the quality of their work is terrible. I did not take a good look at the phone when I picked it up because I never thought Samsung would do such a bad job.

Now my son is paying of a phone that he cannot use.

I will have to take it back on Monday. I guess they will keep it for another week to try to fix it again or give us a refurbished phone.

It is so disappointing.

  • Take it back to where you purchased it…should be covered under warranty as long as there is no evidence of impact from a drop.

    • Thank you. There was definately no impact. My son was shocked and disappointed when he saw the lens. The cover he bought for it was expensive and comes highly rated.

  • I have updated my original post. Unfortunately, Samsung have done a bad job.

  • Where did you buy the phone?

Who repaired it and why did they charge you? It should have been under warranty…

If you are in Melbourne or Sydney did you go to the actual samsung store or a reseller or a carrier?

    • Bought the phone on a plan from Telstra.

My son took it to Samsung Repair Centre in Vermont, Melbourne. They said that the broken lens is not a warranty item.

      • I guess take it back to them.

There is a samsung experience store in Melbourne central that has an equivalent to the apple store 'genius bar'. Basically a technician could have a look and possibly fix it on the spot…

He could probably take it there tomorrow and have them have a look at it. There is also one at Highpoint which I assume has the same thing.

Bring all your receipts from the repair and for the phone from telstra.

        See what they say.

The next step would be for yourself or your husband or partner to go in and demand answers.

I'm not sure how old your son is but sometimes companies like to screw around young people. As someone under 30 I've experienced a fair bit of it and occasionally I've had to have my parents talk to whoever which suddenly makes them change their minds…

Another thing is to post on their Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/SamsungAustralia

        • Thank you for your response. I think I will start with returning it to the service centre in Vermont. It is so disappointing to see that they are not too careful with their repair jobs. How on earth could a large piece of dust get inside the phone.

      • Did you try going to telstra? Sometimes the telco's will fix minor/cheap problems for free, but often use inferior parts. Although a camera lens is a very simple cheap fix.

        • No. Did not go to Telstra. Just took it to the repair centre in vermont.

They charged $55 when they took the phone and another $164 when I collected it. The receipt states - replaced rear case and back glass outer tape.

  • End result was good with the help of the telco.
