42

Canon G16 compact camera lowest price I can find for a good compact.

Got it as a gift, prefer mirrorless myself but each to their own.

      Aren't they all grey imports?

      • +1

        Yes they are

    • Thanks Tuzii was about to post something similar.

  • Crazy that these compacts cost more than a proper camera in a DSLR!

Possibly cost more to build the G16 than low end DSLR.

DSLR does not automatically equate to better picture than compact, especially high end compacts. Strange that are still falling for it.

G16 doesn't compete any dslr in term of IQ.

        • I was at Disney on Ice with the kids on the weekend. They only allow "non-professional" cameras meaning compacts won't worry them but you can't bring a DSLR. About the only use cases left are concerts and events where DSLR is not allowed, and I assume as compacts improve they'll be banned too. It's idiotic. You're allowed to take a picture of the event as long as you make it a poor quality one. I shot with an old Canon SX120IS. A few shots okayish if you accept the noise, but overall an exercise in frustration but for the fact that it kept me amused.

        • Assuming the user knows what he/she is doing with the camera, any DSLR would product better images due to the sensor size in which plays a big role in colour depth, image noise, DOF, lens seletction and the list goes on. This does not apply to 90% of the population with enty level DSLRs. Hence, I would say a high end compact would do more justice to a DSLR.

Many people with too much cash in hand and thinking DSLR is the key to good photos. Sorry, not the case for sure. Yes… 5DIII matched to 24-70L in auto mode shooting JPEG…

I have downgraded from a 5DIII to a G1XII and always whinge about the limitations since because they are built for different purpose.

Having said such, I am comfortable that I can produce a better picture on a G16 than at least 50% of the people who owns an entry to enthusiast grade DSLR. I am sure real photo shooters would not dispute this.

It's not only about your gear, but very important to optimise what you can do with the gear when capturing light.

And yes… it might cost more to build a high end point and shoot than a cheap DSLR.

        • @googleyahoo69:
I have PS, 1 inch, apsc mirror less and dlsr. I try to bring dlsr with me if possible, e.g. 5 weeks trip to Europe. Yes its pain to bring such heavy stuff, but I feel it worth. No, I am not professional, not even an amateur, just taking family photos.

        • @lovbargain:
          Yes… me too… travelling solo with the 5DII (before 5DIII days)… a 24-70L, Tokina 12-28… feels like a dream… good old days… (okay… I am waiting for someone to tell a story with the original 5D and 28-70L)

    • I have a Sony RX1 its 2 years old and i still want to see a DSLR take photos as good as it does.

      • my 55-250 might beat it when small target is 100m away :)

        • ill give you that, but focal length vs focal length.

          @tuzii:
I actually agree with you, particularly at same price range.

The G16 is probably the best option for people that are looking for a full-featured high quality camera without going to an DSLR.

      So it's a different audience.

      • I would recommend those with 1 inch sensor.

G1XII for a few dollars more - very solid.

I was just comparing this camera to others this morning. It's got a lot of good features as a reasonably-small compact camera, but the small sensor lets it down especially in low light. Have a look at DP Review's image comparison tool.
Also, although it's got a viewfinder it's the old optical tunnel type which only shows approximately what will be in your picture.

  • It has an optical viewfinder??

      Read my comment above.

  • The links points to the camera being $469 - should the deal be marked as expired?
