Tata Xenon Ute... thoughts?

http://qtata.com.au/tr05645-110007-tata-xenon-2014.html

Just discovered these are selling for $18,990 in my local area. Its a 2014 Demonstration dual cab, 2.2L turbo diesel and some bells and whistles to boot.

The price is perfect as far as the new tax rules are concerned!

I don't know anything about them except that they're from India.

Have any Ozbargainers had any experience with them as far as build and reliability goes?

Tata Motors is quite a good and reputed brand in India especially for Trucks, busses, 4WDs, vans and coaches. Tata Motors' principal subsidiaries include the British premium car maker Jaguar Land Rover (the maker of Jaguar, Land Rover, and Range Rover cars) and the South Korean commercial vehicle manufacturer Tata Daewoo ( Refer-Wikipedia). With cars it has average success in India.
But one successful car maker in one country may not be good in other country e.g. Suzuki, Few German car makers.
Tata xenon Ute reviews were average. Not sure, I would recommend it.

they make trucks for the Indian army… I'm sure they are strong but they are really ugly… look at the thing

also unsure about reliability, you can forget about resale too and in this price range your only other option is China

to be fair, I think the Mitsubishi Triton is another $10k away and that thing is awful too

      sophies choice really

      • Was looking at a Triton too but it doesn't fit into the tax rebate rule. I would hope that because Tata are an established Indian company I wouldn't have TOO many issues

    • I think an average review is quite good for the price. I think I should get about $7k off my tax bill with the new rules so at a net price of $13k I think I'm doing ok. A 4yr warranty and a 1.9% finance rate that they're doing for that 4 yrs is good piece of mind. Its a great engine by the sounds of it… and using half the fuel that I'm currently using. Just as long as its not in and out of the service center with problems!

      • Depending on use, could be worthwhile looking at a Suzuki APV as well, $18,990 drive away for a manual, 2 seater van :)

  • 3 year warranty and free roadside assist, can't go wrong.

Get what you pay for. Cheap, disposable ute with no re-sale value. If you want a cheap shit-box to drive into the ground, do it. If you're looking for Champagne quality at 'goon sack prices, you're gonna have a bad time… :D

Not to mention I believe earlier Tatas had issues getting high ANCAP scores. If you care about that sort of thing of course.
