Could not see $4 domestic fares. M I missing something.

  • +5

$4.00 flights are availble from Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2), Kuala Lumpur to the following destinations and 8 others :
    Kuala Terengganu
    Penang
    Johor Bahru
    Alor Setar
    Kota Bharu
    Langkawi

and $3.00 from Kota Kinabalu International Airport (T2), Kota Kinabalu to: Tawau

    • +9

To anyone thinking of flying to, or via Kota Kinabalu, leave plenty of time to check in (it took my wife and I almost 2 hours for a domestic flight). The check in desks are woefully inadequate, and 90% of the people flying through there don't have any concept of lining up in an organised fashion. YMMV though.

      • +2

        Seconding this.

It's a mess of an airport. There are passport checks for all entering/exiting passengers, even if flying to KL (still part of Malaysia). Hardly any staff working, Although I did find that people were reasonable at queuing properly.

But only for the LCC terminal, the regular terminal is actually very nice, Air Asia however goes through the LCC terminal

        • the lcc terminal has been replaced by the new klia2 since last year so it's much better now

      • -5

and 90% of the people flying through there don't have any concept of lining up

why are there so many Americans there ???

        • +3

I don't think the Americans have really discovered Malaysia as a holiday destination yet, at least not in any great numbers that we ran into.

        • +1

Ha ha, guessing you've never been to India, JV…

      • Is Kota Kinabalu safe to travel to after their recent Earthquake? I am thinking of going in August

  • Are there any price match oppos on this?

    • +2

      Only for flights to Bali.

Jetstar will price beat if on the same day but they don't fly direct to KUL so you can't price beat on the route.

      • Found any cheap flights to Bali worth matching?

  • +7

    Not particularly cheap from Melbourne.

The deal PER-KUL is good at $99 - remember that most of this fare is Airport Tax meaning even if you cancel/don't catch the flight you can get a refund on this tax minus $6 meaning you would still get $73 back if you cancelled or missed the flight.

    • How can you get a refund? Is this from AirAsia or from insurance?

      • +3
        • +2

Just keep in mind if you think there is a chance, you might need to cancel, that fees like prepaid food and luggage are not refundable.

        • Thanks zappy - I didn't know about this!

        • Thanks! That's very useful to know!

        • +1

          @Mamajo:

You're welcome, I should also probably say that this is only on outbound flights. There isn't much Airport Tax on the return flight so if you cancel that you would only get a fraction back.

  • +2

Tokyo to Perth is coming up at $168, that's a great deal

    • I managed to get Narita return from Perth for $420.

  • +4

What a shame AirAsia doesn't fly from Adelaide anymore. We are a minority :(

    • Yes :)

That's why we've never moved back there - too expensive to get out of the country from Adelaide.

  • no sale for japan in dec

    • +4

coz that's not in the sale period…

      • i read until 2016 but dec must have been the embargo. prices acrually went up for japan and almost everywhere else in dec. will pass.. i find their smaller less known sales better.

  • -1

Is Air Asia safer than Malaysian?
No Japan bargain flights for 2015??
It's hard to plan so far ahead.

    • +2

Matter of opinion really, both have lost planes recently but I think this is more an anomaly than anything else. Flown both in the last 12 months and will again too.

      • -4

Yep thunderstorms are an anomaly…. Totally unavoidable if you fly straight through them haha and hell missing the runway?. Yep that's understandable

        • +1

As you work in the industry I'm sure you know they radioed flight control to request permission to avoid the thunderstorm and were denied.

        • -1

          @zappy_32:

Yeh mate and as an airline pilot I know I can turn the plane to avoid the thunderstorm without air traffic controls approval!!! We avoid them by 40 kilometres…Nasty business

        • +3

@markybee: Denzel Washington turned his plane like a boss

        • @muncan:

          Exactly!!

        • @markybee:

Going to have to side with marky here. Few months ago air Asia gets airborne at Sydney and loses FMS. Had no GPS for navigation and asked for a rough heading to Kuala Lumpur. Diverted to melb after ATC refused such a dangerous idea. Took 3 attempts to land in clear weather. Air Asia are a major reason an ILS is at the gold coast for reasons you don't want to know.

          Source: in the industry.

    • -1

If I had to make a call, I'd say No.

Malaysian: They lost a plane (not sure yet what's happened to it), which may have been their fault (or a numerous other causes) but we don't yet know. Then the Russians in Ukraine shot one down, definitely not Malaysian fault.

Air Asia: Lost a plane that was flying unapproved routes, then into a storm. Lots of mistakes here.

      • -2

        Malaysian: They lost a plane

almost lost one in Melbourne the other day too…

        http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/aviation/malaysia-a…

        I wouldn't trust them….

      • +2

The loss over the Ukraine was MA's fault.
They chose to fly over a war zone where there was known threats. Military gets were being shot at all the time there.

      • +3

Malaysian Air few over an active war-zone, I'd say getting shot down is partially their fault, it would have been safer to fly around.

        • +1

it would have been safer to fly around.

like many other airlines chose to… But it was cheaper for them to fly through…

        • @jv: did they OzBargain the route?

        • what about Singapore Airlines? they fly not too far away from Air Asia's plane that get shot down….

does that make you think Singapore Airline is unsafe to fly now?

I remember there are few more different airlines too flying at that time not too far away

      • -2

I am yet to see a shred of evidence that exists to support Russia being responsible for shooting MH17 down. If it exists, please share. You have to begin with asking yourself who would benefit from such a heinous act? How would the Russians or the separatists benefit? On the other hand, the fascist US backed regime in kiev as well as the americans had everything to gain from doing it in terms of putting the blowtorch on Russia and demonizing Putin… But yet again we swallow the propaganda fed to us time after time without thinking logically.

        • yawn, what a stinking pile of Russia Today crap.

Singapore airlines was flying the same route, as were plenty of other airlines. Yes, a few airliners had changed their routes based on either additional information or additional risk assessments.

and who said those retards on the ground intended to shoot down a passenger plane?
          That's you projecting, comrade

All the radio traffic intercepted from those morons had them claiming the successful shooting of a Ukrainian plane. Shortly followed by "oh shit"

          Such a tragic loss

        • -2

          @ChickenTalon:

The radio traffic that was intercepted and released to the worlds corporate media within hrs of the plane crashing?? Come on man.. Seriously?? It is a complete farce.

Once again, I ask you.. What did Russia or the rebels have to gain from shooting an airliner out of the sky? It makes no sense. The west on the other hand had the propaganda all ready to go fresh of the heels of the annexation of crimea.. Call it Russia today crap if you like but its the only logical explanation somebody that's thinking objectively can arrive at. But hey, I can always be swayed with evidence.. My mind is fixed on nothing.

          @Bullion78:

Easy to neg a comment and then run…Just shows how much the average human brain is fried from all the mainstream nonsense they habitually imbibe.

  • Haha…people have short memories… Air asia flew into a thunderstorm last year and killed everyone on board. Lion air missed the runway on short final Rwy 09 and ditched. How many hulls have Virgin Australia or Jetstar lost? As an airline employee who regularly flies into Bali , when people ask me about Air Asia or Garuda, I suggest they spend a little more cash …how would I know though?

Please note I voted positive for this sale…still cheap !, nice post op

    • +10

Agreed. I will never drive a holden because I heard one was in a car crash. And I won't use GE trains because one once derailed.
      Oh, hang on. I disagree.
I am prepared to accept that the maintenance and training for Jetstar/virgin/qantas flights is top notch. But I don't think that a crash in a storm makes it valid to conclude Airasia can't reliably operate an airline.
Considering the hundreds of flights they operate every day, apparently more than 200 million passengers carried all up, I would suggest they have a very good safety record.
The IOSA apparently agrees their systems are adequate:
      http://www.airasia.com/au/en/press-releases/airasia-x-receiv…

Much higher risk of dying on the way to the airport than once in the air.

      • +1

Agreed. I will never drive a holden because I heard one was in a car crash

It's about the quality of their pilots, not the plane…

        • +3

Fair enough, I was comparing a brand.
I won't get in a Silver Taxi because one once crashed. Or a government bus. Might be better comparisons.
Knowing AirAsia had a crash doesn't give enough information to judge whether they are safe or not. It must be viewed in terms of the number of flights that don't crash too.
They have a worse record than Qantas, but a very good record none the less.
And they have recently been audited and passed.
The chances of there being a crash are vanishingly small. If you applied this level of risk avoidance in other areas of your life you would never get in a car, shake somebody's hand or climb a ladder.

        • +1

@jv: "60 per cent of passengers have a fear of flying"

          Surely that's not true?!?!?

        • +3

          @Matt89:
It's on the Internet. Must be true.

        • @jv:
That article was written before they had their IOSA audit. The main objection the author makes is the IOSA audit is an important marker of safety quality. AirAsiaX passed their audit in May. Other AirAsia divisions are forthcoming.
          http://www.airasia.com/au/en/press-releases/airasia-x-receiv…

      • +1

Systems are adequate, the question is cockpit authority gradient and losing face which has been an ongoing issue with Asian carriers.

Its not a question of reliability, its a question of safety and situational awareness. In a holden you kill 5 people usually by driver error , in an aircraft if you get it wrong, i.e flying into a thunderstorm that is completely avoidable you can kill 180 plus in one foul swoop.

        Food for thought!!

        • Not disagreeing, for example the Korean Air crash with this issue.
But I guess I am saying the increased risk because AirAsia has this problem that, for example, Qantas doesn't have, is such a tiny, tiny additional risk considering the very good safety record that it is poor risk management to let it influence the decision.

It is like a smoker who gives up aspartame because it might cause cancer. Sure, aspartame could possibly cause cancer in rare cases, but there is a much bigger risk to be concerned about elsewhere.

        • @markybee:

picking a few bad eggs (those bad pilots in Indonesia) & made an conclusion? seriously?

  • +4

Just got some flights from Mel to Bali for over Anzac day in 2016 (leaving sat coming back the sunday after) and got 2 adults and 1 infant return with 25KG for each adult each way for only $780! with a price beat from Jetstar.

    Thanks TA!!!!

    • +1

Nice work, and if you are on their 787 you will have heaps of legroom , brand new aircraft with Aussie trained crew!!!!

      • yep both flights are 787 :-)

      • And an aircraft maintained OS in possibly same places that other budget carriers use?

      • Who do you recommend for Japan flights (Tokyo)?

    • You were able to price beat Air Asia even though they don't fly direct?
Can you price beat Tokyo too?

      • +2

Air Asia flies direct to Bali from Melbourne.

        • Ah I see.
Darwin -> Bali seems like a good option too for people in northern states. They both fly direct to there. If traveling from Brisbane, you don't have to go to Gold Coast to pick up a deal here. So Brisbane to Darwin is $85 on tiger or $76.5 (pricebeat) on Jetstar. Then Darwin -> Bali is $99 on AirAsia or $89.10 (pricebeat) on Jetstar.

That makes it $165.60 from Brisbane to Bali.

Only issue is the next flight of the day is only 30 mins after the Jetstar flight arrives from Brisbane. Likely not enough time unless you can convince Jetstar to book it as one flight? I think they still need 40 minutes to do that.

  • Perth to Tokyo during cherry blossom season $700 return. Not bad.

  • Would you guys recommend Air Asia for SYD > Tokyo one way? total ~16 hours flight time + stop over time via KL

$279 but excludes luggage & food (which I will need)
If I add luggage and food it comes to around $480

    • +1

no way. we booked jetstar to tokyo. it's cheaper than air asia too. then flying air asia to bangkok, phuket, kl and back to oz. kl to gc in dec was au$509 for 5 ppl onway in late dec. in this current sale price is much more higher. i hate these type of sales that isnt really a sale.

      • thank you for your feedback. I checked using Qantas FF, it's only 36,000 points one way to Tokyo anyway. pretty cheap in points.

guess I wont be flying air asia

  • +1

Does anyone else get the waiting room ?

    http://i.imgur.com/6jK1WcT.png

I tryied to find a connecting flight from Melbourne - KL to my destination and it sent me to this waiting room that doesn't go away.

  • Thanks, got some tickets for April next year to Malaysia for the family.

  • The real bargains are the flights outbound from KL.
Flights from Australia to KL are ok to average pricing.
Prices from a final destination back to KL are not part of this sale from the looks of it.

  • Booked a long weekend in KL.

  • For the long weekend here in June (NSW) a few weeks ago - I found it was just as easier to book Air Asia on Expedia (combine flight and hotel) than with Air Asia itself

4 nights in KL - 4.5* hotel in KLCC - plus flights and bags - $777 each (booked 3 days before
    departure.)

It was the same price I paid last year (and strangely had the same seats flying over and the same hotel room - deja vu !!)

Unless you have specific dates - then maybe explore the Expedia options for KL !!

  • Anyone having issues paying with PayPal? All of my flights that I've booked show as Needing Payment, and I haven't received an invoice from either PayPal or AirAsia.

    • I booked this morning and only got my PayPal invoice about 30 minutes ago.

  • Air asia just won best budget airline voted by 600k voters in the world for 2015

Let's take not take into account last week false engine fire indication and return to melb. Some of you say it could happen to anyone. Is it a case of bad luck or a culture of short cuts and cost cutting?

Make your own call but I say no.

    Source: in the industry.

    • Well put Expon

  • in the last 3 weeks I've flown AirAsia about 10 times, flights ranging from 1-8 hours each. I'm very happy with them. I guess they're only bad if something does happen.. I'm not sure if they're any more unsafe than any other airline. I like them.

  • Made two bookings, money taken for both, however for the first one it showed payment needed and afterwards the booking is gone. Spoke two times on the phone and made two online complaints - now have to wait one week for the answer.

Before when I flew with them my wallet got stuck in the scanner and as I was in a hurry I didn`t notice. I took off without the wallet and they refused to despatch it to me and even did not let me know they are refusing it. No email, no nothing. I had to call Sydney airport to be told they are refusing it.
Therefore, they are OK if it is working, if something is not working god help you.

    • +2

so YOU left your wallet behind and now blame someone else for it? cool story bro

      • -3

I didnt leave it, it was stuck in the scanner. And found straight away (after I reported it ten minutes later). I wasnt allowed to go back to pick it up and was told to get on the flight and Air Asia would give it to me later. The crew was promising all that telling me I would be contacted later on which never happened.

  • +1

What does a security screening operated by Sydney Airport have to do with Air Asia?

    • Well, another airline would not leave their passenger stranded without funds in a foreign country. Or at least let them know they are leaving them to their own. The Sydney airport staff told me that other airlines were actually helping out in that kind of a situation. Things like that just happen from time to time.

      • wallet lost in airport? making assumption that you lost(well..stuck unnoticed) a wallet and want them to bare the cost of arranging it to deliver to you at oversea?

        • It is not the same when something is lost by neglect and lost by external circumstances.
What kind of cost are you talking about, they have flights daily to my destination? The only thing they needed to do was take the wallet and bring it to the office in Bangkok at Don Muang airport for pick up.

        • @noskich:

Ok, so to report the final outcome regarding the problem with the booking. I booked a flight on the 22nd June, the money was taken and I got no booking. Called them and submitted an e-form as suggested. They were supposed to call me back within 5 business days and they didnt. I called them again and they said they would call me within 2 next business days. They didnt. I called them again and they finally sent me the new booking. Bottom line - very inefficient whenever any problem arises and I think the biggest problem is that they simply never follow up. Just leave you to chase them. Which can be stressful if you are overseas and on a budget as a few of their regular customers are.

  • i beleuve this is a pay to fly airline. your pilots are paying to fly….. to get their hours up..

if you were getting heart surgery would you choose a budget surgeon or one you know hasnt cut corners to save money

    • You're on the wrong website mate.

      • not sure what you mean, can you be specific.

  • Is it possible..and easy enough…to book two tickets Melb to Bali or Melb to Langkawi with one ticket with my name on it and then if no longer traveling with that friend/partner change the name for the second traveller?

Also how difficult is it to get jetstar to price beat (or match - whatever they do)? You do that in a jetstar online chat rather than on the phone or something is that right?

    • To the best of my knowledge you cannot name change on those trips regardless of travel fare & class. ( After your initial search click on the price and you will see a pop-up of what changes, if any, you can make)
