but for the moment, are there any particular models I should aim for? Any I should avoid? Admittedly, I don't know much about vacuum cleaners outside Dyson/Miele being good names, so I'm basically letting OzBargain decide the next one I get (i.e. the next deal that pops up on the front page) unless your opinions here influence my future decision.
I will probably buy the next Dyson or Miele Vacuum Cleaner that shows up on OzBargain (because my carpet is a hair forest)

At this point, to me the pros and cons of bagged/bagless are 50%/50% so I don't really mind either way. But if anyone thinks there is some sort of huge advantage about one over the other, I'd like to hear it.
I've got this vacuum and it annoys me. (1) The suction is so strong that it's hard to move across carpet, and turning it down makes it too weak, (2) The orange "bag full" indicator goes on sometimes even for a new bag, (3) the air it blows up smells dusty, (4) it's heavy, making it cumbersome to get out, which is why I'm considering one of these handheld dysons
Apparently (1) can be solved with a $100 turbo head, and (3) with a $50 HEPA filter. Are these worth it?
The filter setup in the Miele is perfect… must be something wrong there?
MUST have a turbo head… forgot to mention that part.LOL… without it you wont move the normal head off the floor.. it will suck the nails out of your floorboards (humour, joke, :0)
Thanks. Now to see if I can find a deal on a turbo head!
@fredblogs:
Shops normally asking $100 for the turbo head… a bit rich for what it is :-(
Best to get one bundled with the vacuum when buying.
We asked for the turbo and a box of bags with ours as a pkg deal and scored that way.
They should be standard on all Miele vacuums.
The next Dyson post — Dyson Cordless Handstick DC45 $299 + Bonus $50 eBay Voucher @ Masters eBay
Okay, it looks like I am now on a race against time! At the moment I have my eye on this one:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/199587
It's the Dyson Cordless Handstick DC45 and based on OzBargain's DC45 pricing history, that's probably as low as it will go: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/Dyson+DC45
So $299 and then:
minus $50 eBay voucher (expires 25 June 2015)
minus 10% (~$25 or $30) eBay voucher (expires 27 June 2015)
= $220~225.The only problem is using the $50 eBay voucher in July on something I need (something I was going to buy anyway), rather than want (an impulse purchase just for the sake of using the voucher).
Doing a bit of reading, apparently the DC54 AKA V6 is (arguably) more powerful but also has less battery and about $200 more expensive so I don't think I require it.
What do you think?
What's this 10% eBay voucher you speak of, is it a targeted offer?
Forgot to mention, yes it is a targeted offer only valid for that particular eBay account.
Are you trying to use it as a family vacuum/main vacuum? I don't think these handheld ones can be used like that easily. I own a DC59 animal, while I like it a lot, it does have its flaws.
If you are planning on cleaning a large room, prepare to empty your vacuum at least once, the bin is too small for multiple rooms. In fact, I once vacuumed a living room that I housesitted, they had a dog and a half broken vacuum cleaner. I can't remember whether I emptied the bag 5 or 6 times just cleaning that living room alone.
Also it runs on battery, so entire house cannot be cleaned in one go, especially if you use turbo mode.
Since you need to empty the vacuum a lot, as it is bagless, you do end up with dust flying everywhere if you are not careful (I learnt a trick of emptying the basket by completely removing the basket inside the bin).
If you are planning on using it for a small room or a small area, then I think these are wonderful and do their job almost perfectly. I don't think I had issues where the vacuum was not sucking hard enough (lol), but things I've mentioned can be an issue.
Are you trying to use it as a family vacuum/main vacuum? I don't think these handheld ones can be used like that easily.
This is correct. You should get a proper vacuum - it will save you effort and give you a better outcome.
I own a Dyson, after owning many other brands, and would buy another fo sho.
Thumbs up for Miele. We bought our first Miele 'Cat & Dog' 10 years ago, it was so good that we bought another one for upstairs few years ago. We have a cat, a dog, 3 messy young kids (& husband), we use both vacuums almost every day. Floor boards, tiles, rugs all good.
As AznMitch alluded to, would be helpful to share some details of your home to get the best advice. eg: apartment/house? how many bedrooms? do you have pets? what kind, how many? etc.
Wife has long red hair, the cat has red hair, they both shed and the $60 Shop-Vac seems to pick it up fine.
It almost pulls the carpet off the floor.
Now if only I can find something to sort out the hair monsters in the shower drain for me <shudder>I am looking for Dyson DC54ANIMAL Bagless Barrel Vacuum Cleaner as well. can the cheapest I can find is E&S trading.
Anyone have suggestion of good deal?
We have the Dyson Animal barrel vac and a DC34 (I think) stick vac with the motorised head. Both are great.
If you're looking for one in the meantime, and have hair-on-carpet issues try and get one with a motorised head that will help pull it out. Makes a world of difference.
I just bought a super cheap and cheerful Vax from Harvey Norman. Its been pretty excellent. My dyson was good but it was a bit clunky for my apartment. And the handstick was just too weak and had no battery life
I bought a Dyson 54 multi floor last year. Have 3 cats and it is hands down the best vacuum cleaner I've owner. The down side is being a bag less if the dust you get when emptying it, but I do this outside.
Guess what. I didn't get a chance to buy this vacuum cleaner from either of the two shops. I only wanted to give myself a 24 hour cooling off period and I didn't think it would get ozbargained that quick. Oh well.
Anyway to answer some of your questions, it's for the home but this home doesn't have too much carpet so the low use-per-charge shouldn't be too much of a problem. Dog and cat owner here.
With 20% off deal coming up (well unconfirmed but still), hopefully you'd find a deal.
Just adding onto what I've mentioned before, does your dog and cat shed a lot of fur? The house that I've house-sat had a puppy that was "fluffy". I've mentioned how I needed to make 5~6 trips emptying the bag on the first day, but I've not mentioned how I've needed to do 2 trips after that as well. As I've mentioned, the more emptying you need, the more likely that you'd notice the negative aspect of the bagless vacuums (emptying is not usually a clean process). Though, as I've mentioned, if you remove the bin inside the rubbish bin and close it while it's in the bin, most of the dust falls inside the bin (I'd clean the vacuum bin outside once in awhile though)
what store is going to have 20% off… ???
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/199852
I should've mentioned, the eBay deal. :S
eBay stores from this list will have 20% off, apparently (unconfirmed though).

Do you have inside knowledge of a 20% of deal coming up?
Not just me, but I woke up at 7am to use the 20% discount on one of the DC45s. The listing was probably cancelled somewhere between midnight and 7am. Blah. My search for a vacuum cleaner continues.
Good did not come those who were patient. Not this time.
The Miele Cat Dog seems nice but I don't feel like paying that much, even with the good price.
Does anyone remember what the price of the Dyson v6 was during the 20% eBay promotion? Was it ever $499 during that time?
Replying to my own post but was probably the typical "jacking up the price" behaviour
Get one of those shark vacuum cleaners. They have fantastic suction power and works really well on carpets. To top it off, they offer 5 years warranty (+ another 5 if you haggle them).
In any case, my search for a vacuum cleaner ends: I bought mine for $425 ($499 with a 15% eBay voucher, and before you ask, it's for my account only). That was why I asked if any sellers had the Dyson v6 for $499 during the 20% eBay promo last month.
Originally, I was going to buy the DC45 but apparently some people felt that they would use the DC45 in conjunction to their main vacuum cleaner, but if they had a V6, that would basically become their main vacuum cleaner.
Also, I (and perhaps other people) would be more inclined and motivated in vacuum cleaning the house if it was portable (like the V6 is). It's easy to just plug and play, sorry wrong terminology, pickup and vacuum with a portable one than to go through the trouble of taking out a standard big vacuum cleaner out of the cupboard, setting it up, plugging it in etc. Good for quick minor cleans.
i bought a Miele S8790 from HN a few months ago (can't remember the price but they threw in 6 boxes of bags) and the thing kicks ass. I previously had a couple of Dysons and while they were good, the Miele is heads and shoulders above. The thing sucked up a face towel and didn't even skip a beat. Bags take 30secs to swap over and last about 4-5 months (i clean weekly - house is hardwood floored with a few rugs
Guys is this a good price on the C3 Family All Rounder? 2000 watts, made in germany, $355
http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/miele-complete-c3-family-all-r…
Had a Miele S5211 for a few years… would buy another but looks like a long time wearing this one out.
Only thing is… do you want bagged or bagless? The Miele is bagged but does hold a lot and is a lot easier to clean than bagless ones we have had.
Watch out for all the 13 month cheapies out there. They work out to be the most expensive.
