We have a old ducted split aircon installed and now its has been running bit odd. Zoning not working. .heating not working properly. So we are planning to upgrade to the new air conditioning system in our house. Any recommendations on types / brand of aircon? How much this job will cost roughly?

Hi electricbluee,
I run my own air conditioning company so I can help you out as much as you can. Zoning not working could mean a few different things, could mean the VAV controlelrs don't work (the damper motors that open and shut air to the zone), the VAV controller (what tells what to close/open), or the wall panel (what you press). These all vary depending on the brand. But note, ducted components tend to get pricey depending on the model i.e daikin units are great units - but components tend to be pricey (when they do break).
The unit not heating can be a few simple things like reversing valve solenoid not working, blocked filters or contactor faulty. But be aware that it could also be something like short of gas, or faulty reversing valve, which could cost more.
I can guarantee you that it will cost more to replace the unit with a new one that to repair it. Repairing it would most likely mean your looking for a short term fix, lower outlay. Long term would mean ripping the unit out, changing the zoning, etc.
Do you get the unit serviced regularly? Alot of problems can be picked up on a service. I would call around and ask companies to service your air con, they will itemize all the problems out for you and if you wanted to, you could ask them for a quote for repairs and weigh up your options.
If you are in Brisbane I can help you out if you need anything.
Got quote as below, what do you think?
1) new install
Daikin(inverter )
12kw single phase
Including 3XZoning
Total cost $78002) Install 1Xzone. $250 for old unit (which is like 30yrs old)
single story or double story house?
how many outlets?
what is your roof made of?
how old is your house?
how old is the wiring?
how old is the previous a/c system?
so many variables. best to call a couple of a/c dudes and get some quotes.
