Optus Cable Broadband Is Not Available on My Address but My Neighbours Can Have It

hi ozbargainers,

i need little help here about optus broadband services, my property is 1 year old and when i check on optus cable broadband it says not serviceable but when i search my neighbours address optus site says they are serviceable. Can you guys please share your experiences in this situation what should i do ? i am currently in fawkner and using telstra broadband which is really annoying me by its ups and downs in speed and also sudden random disconnections.

Thanks

  • Hey mate,

Ex Telstra cable user here. Had cable at two addresses successfully, latest and current address Telstra sent out a tech to reconnect our service and said all the connections were filled :( Optus are running a cable though, so hopefully with any luck we'll be connected with them by the end of the month!

Basically with cable your connection goes to a pit on the street near your house. If those are all connected already you're out of luck. If they don't have a pit there you're out of luck.
    Example - https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/image/serverpage/imag…

    Wait till a neighbour disconnects?

    Wait for NBN?

Such is the life of being an Australian trying to get a decent internet connection…

  • Optus will only provide you with Cable Broadband if you have a street frontage. If you are a 2nd or 3rd unit in a block of townhouses you are out of luck. This is because Optus will not allow their lead-in to cross into any neighbouring properties.

If this isn't a problem, and you do have a street frontage that is presumably serviced by Optus Cable, you can request that Optus do a service assessment on your address to determine its suitability (basically a technician does a drive-by).

Also I would consider Optus Cable to be inferior to Telstra ADSL2+ overall. The Optus international transit links are heavily congested, and Cable broadband slows considerably in most areas during the evening peak due to congestion (Cable is different from ADSL2+ in that the cable is 'shared' with everyone on the street).

    • Not true. Optus does indeed service properties without street frontage with cable.

I had it at two houses, neither had street frontage. One was the second house back, and the other was the third house back.

      • Was this with overhead cable? If so, I'm very surprised.
I'm aware that underground installations are possible, but I'll be surprised if the OP has an existing underground installation that Optus isn't already aware of.

        • Underground.

        • @Drew22:

Telstra owns all the underground cables. Thats why optus has them above.

  • thanks guys for sharing your valuable knowledge, i never had cable internet connection thats why i was thinking it will be faster than adsl2+. There are three houses on this property and mine is at the end so i think i will request optus to send someone for service assessment to see if i can get it

    • Pretty clear from the post above that they will not do it.

    • why not picky back off your neighbour and pay for some of the monthly cost?

      • lol idea is great but the better option is to stay with telstra super slow internet connection

    • +1

I live in a block of two units, one behind the other with a common driveway. Mine is the rear one and I got Optus cable installed probably 7-8 years ago now.

At the time, the Optus website where I put in my address said I couldn't get it but I called up and asked for a special install as I could see the physical cable right outside overhead on the street.

A guy came out to assess and gave the ok, although I had to get the front unit's owner to sign permission to attach a support beam to his house to hold up the cable so it didn't sag when running such a long distance. The installer came out the following week and all ok except I can only have a maximum of two points due to the distance and signal strength.

      Hope that helps!

  • I was in the same situation. I live in a small development and when it was built they installed a 'mini-exchange' to handle phone lines.
These mini exchanges do not have the full functionality of a normal exchange and have very limited data connections.
When I asked for a connection I was told that they were all allocated and there was a waiting list.
I waited until a house in the street sold and then re-applied, knowing that they would be disconnected for a while.
It worked and I grabbed the connection.
